Pop it in the oven
Pop it in the fridge
Pop it into your bag.

Arghhh. So twee. So

When did plain old fashioned 'put' get ousted?

Am I alone in my angst?!

And what other words grate on you?

I don't mind pop, I dislike holibobs!

LadyCleathStuart · 05/01/2022 12:53

I hate 'pop' but we don't say it much in Scotland (at least not where I am) so it's mostly on TV it annoys me.

I hate chocolate being shortened to 'choc' or 'choccy' also. Drives me mad - 'hot choc' 'choccy biscuit' aaaargh.

EinsteinaGogo · 05/01/2022 12:55

I'm with you on holibobs and choccy!

Actually I've just blown my own mind by realising I don't mind popping to the shops, but I hate popping in the oven 🙈😂

I don't think it's especially new. My grandma has said pop for as long as I can remember and she's 101.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 05/01/2022 12:56

When did 'bother' become 'bug'....

Sorry, I couldn't resist Grin

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 05/01/2022 12:56

I don't mind it - it's cheerful-sounding.

wonderpants · 05/01/2022 12:57

When did give become gifted? That really pisses me off for no reason!
Gift is a noun, give is a verb!

BaronessBomburst · 05/01/2022 12:57

What about popping the kettle on? Grin

TabithaTittlemouse · 05/01/2022 12:58

I don’t know anyone who says pop. Is it regional?

dementedpixie · 05/01/2022 12:58

I pop to the shop

DropYourSword · 05/01/2022 12:58

It’s been around for long enough! Remember that it cause Louise Woodward problems in her trial.

Bideshi · 05/01/2022 12:59

Always makes me think of obs-gynae speak. 'Just pop your pants off for me and pop on to the couch.' Lots of popping goes on when you for a smear.

gogohm · 05/01/2022 13:00

I think it's formal vs colloquial. I would say place in the oven if I was formally writing an recipe! I usually do use put thinking about it

LadyCampanulaTottington · 05/01/2022 13:00

Pop is jaunty. Put is beige.

Bitofachinwag · 05/01/2022 13:00

"Grab" a "bite" to eat! Sounds so rude. Grabbing is rude! And they probably didn't just have one bite of their food either!

Also "pick up", as in " I picked up some bananas on the way home" when you actually mean that you bought them.

Beachbreak2411 · 05/01/2022 13:00

I’m so with you OP.. i hate “pop” another hate is “yummy” 🤮🤢

WorraLiberty · 05/01/2022 13:01

'Watch' in relation to childcare.

"I asked my MIL to watch my baby while I'm at work".

It conjours up an image of a woman sitting there all day, with folded arms, just staring at a Moses basket 🤷🏼‍♀️ 😂

BarbaraofSeville · 05/01/2022 13:02

People who say 'do' or 'did' when they mean going or went to - We're doing the Algarve this year. Doing what to it?

Use of incredible or phenomenol to mean 'quite nice'

EinsteinaGogo · 05/01/2022 13:02

I dislike popping, grabbing and jumping, as in
Pop it in the post
Grab a sandwich
Jump on the bus

Just do these actions like normal people!

Yes, this. So much grabbing going on.
MaryAndHerNet · 05/01/2022 13:04

In my home town in the Midlands, every bugger pops everywhere and pops everything in everything.

KurtWilde · 05/01/2022 13:06

My gran always used 'pop' as in pop the kettle on etc.. she'd be 100 this year so I'm pretty certain it's not that new!

This!!!! A million times this! And I don't know why I hate it so much as I'm not usually bothered about this sort of thing, pop doesn't bug me at all 😂😂 But 'gifted' is nails on a chalkboard every time!
Bearsbearsbears40 · 05/01/2022 13:07

We tend to use “nip to the shop” more than pop, but I do use pop for other examples. The one that really grates for me is “dropping” someone an email. What happened to just sending one?
