When did put become 'pop' and why does it bug me so much?!

EinsteinaGogo · 05/01/2022 12:48

Pop it in the oven
Pop it in the fridge
Pop it into your bag.

Arghhh. So twee. So

When did plain old fashioned 'put' get ousted?

Am I alone in my angst?!

And what other words grate on you?

OP posts:
Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 05/01/2022 13:52

I nip to the shops, shove in the oven and chuck in the washer- but Im also quite yorkshire, so I shove in't oven, nip t' shop and chuck in't washer. I also request that the 'nippers chuck wood in't ole' if a door is left open.

I also present for your consideration-

whack or whacked to mean put, or included in.

Hate it !!!

Never ever heard of it

@autismandgin

I don’t mind pop. But I hate “need gone”

“Need gone” makes me so angry and I have no idea why. Blush

Me too, this gives me the rage. I also hate 'baby' instead of 'the baby' and 'hun'
Wineandroses3 · 05/01/2022 13:56

Another one , when someone’s writes “he’s” instead of his. “ my son has had he’s bike nicked, make it too hot to handle get it shared”. It’s his! And the latest one “get at my page”… then shows a link to homemade cakes with a load of chocolate bars still in their wrappers shoved inside a manky looking cake.

Lexinoonoo · 05/01/2022 13:56

Lol, I'm currently reading Mapp and Lucia set in the 1930s and Mapp is vexed by Diva's use of the word verb 'to pop', so it's been a bone of contention for at least 90yrs!

3luckystars · 05/01/2022 13:58

Everyone has been popping for years in Take a Break magazine.

KeepScrapingBy · 05/01/2022 13:59

Sunflower101 ‘ give it up, make some noise’. What’s that all about?

This. And "Put your hands together for ..." What, and just keep them there? That won't make a clapping noise ...

LadyCatStark · 05/01/2022 13:59

Myself/ yourself instead of me/ you, it doesn’t make you (yourself? 🙈) sound cleverer! Oh and also using I instead of me and in, “Do you want to pop to the shops with Michelle and I?” Again because people think it makes them sound cleverer.
Pud/ choc/ biccies etc.
We’ve been watching Selling Sunset (I know but it was genuinely DH’s choice 😂) and when ordering they always say, “I’m gonna doooo… a salad.” How on earth do you do a salad?? Oh and there’s never a please after it either!

Justleaveitblankthen · 05/01/2022 14:00

I always use: "Run round" when I orderrequest my DC to "Run round with Henry Hoover please?"
It sweetens the task and brings to mind them chasing round and round it as opposed to actually doing it 😂( in my own mind, I don't suggest that to them )

Bluebluemoon · 05/01/2022 14:03

Yes! Usually for a packet of biccies or a box of chocs.

One I'm guilty of, even thought I hate when other people say it is adding "you guys" to sentences when addressing my dc's or mates. I've had to consciously try to stop saying it!

Agree "pop" is annoying - very hyacinth bucket (or bouquet!)

1forAll74 · 05/01/2022 14:07

I might say I am nipping to the shop, but never popping to the shop.
My late Mum used to say I am nipping this to everything, as in nipping up the garden to peg the washing out,or nipping next door to see her neighbour. I am from Cheshire originally, and Nipping was widely used, but never heard it much in Hertfordshire here.

Doggydoodah123 · 05/01/2022 14:07

'Making a brew'. Shudder

yourestandingonmyneck · 05/01/2022 14:10

I don't mind pop, don't like bung or chuck.

Added eye rolling if it's anything to do with finances as that just adds a whole new layer of smug.

Bung it in an ISA.

I just chucked it in my pension.

Chucked it at the mortgage.

🙄

eagerlywaitingfor · 05/01/2022 14:11

@wonderpants

When did give become gifted? That really pisses me off for no reason! Gift is a noun, give is a verb!
I'm in total agreement with this one.

I would say 110% but.... Grin

greencats · 05/01/2022 14:11

@Magnited

Pet hates:

Crimbo
Holibobs
Hubby
Wifey
'Reach Out'

Drippy, drippy, drippy....

All vile I agree !!
HaveringWavering · 05/01/2022 14:12

@BlusteryLake

I dislike popping, grabbing and jumping, as in Pop it in the post Grab a sandwich Jump on the bus

Just do these actions like normal people!

Or "jump on to a call"! Aargh!

I am with you on "pop" OP! I also dislike "invite" as a noun instead of "invitation".

Lazydaisydaydream · 05/01/2022 14:12

I hate it when owners of companies say things like “pop me a message” on their social media.

BellaChagall · 05/01/2022 14:17

Make a brew - ugh
Hollibobs
'Can I get' instead of 'may I have'
Invite

And my pet hate is

I'm going Sainsbury's. I'm going Tenerife. Etc. Instead of 'going to'

I asked my toddler to jump recently. I can't remember the exact context but it was something like "jump up then" when I wanted him to get up off the sofa or similar. He literally did start jumping 😂
CraazyCatLady · 05/01/2022 14:18

I hate... are you 'stopping' the night? It's staying!

Also people that say... my mum borrowed me the money! No, she leant you the money, and you borrowed it from her!

TankFlyBoss · 05/01/2022 14:18

I hate people who order things like in cafes or restaurants and say "can I get" instead of "can I have"

Lalliella · 05/01/2022 14:22

Pop off OP! Pop is a fab word!

stuntbubbles · 05/01/2022 14:22

“Job’s a good’un” makes me want to go on a killing spree.
