When did put become 'pop' and why does it bug me so much?!

Pop it in the oven
Pop it in the fridge
Pop it into your bag.

Arghhh. So twee. So

When did plain old fashioned 'put' get ousted?

Am I alone in my angst?!

And what other words grate on you?

I get really irritated by people who use infantile phrases like “how’s you?” instead of “how are you?”.
I work with a man who greets everyone on video calls with “howdy-do” Angry

Migrainesbythedozen · 05/01/2022 18:00

The word 'twee' is far worse, and I don't even know what it means being a non-UK poster, but I HATE the sound of it anyway..

SingingSands · 05/01/2022 18:03

I don't pop things in the oven, I bung them in.

I wrote a recipe for the school newspaper when I was in Primary 4 and used the term "bung it in the oven". My dad saved a copy because it made him laugh so much. Grin

Beachhuts90 · 05/01/2022 18:05

Bung is the one that drives me nuts actually 😂 usually in the context of "Christmas is just a glorified roast dinner, just bung it in the oven"

BogRollBOGOF · 05/01/2022 18:05

"Prepping" as in prepping dinner earlier in the day. "Prepped" isn't much easier to say than "prepared" anyway.

@PickledPeppa

I hate it when people describe going somewhere as "rocking up" to a place. No you didn't "rock up to the school gates this morning". You did what everyone else did and walked, drove or rode there.
God, I hate that too!

I want to see someone actually rock up. AC DC blasting, guitar / drum playing. Head banging Grin

I cringe inside when my husband used the expression “fella” to another man, like when he takes his car to the mechanic etc. “Allright fella” 😖

Wineandroses3 · 05/01/2022 22:37

Uses not used

WoodenReindeer · 05/01/2022 22:41

Plenty x. Greys anatomy were doing this instead of very.

WaningMoon · 05/01/2022 23:12

Also - the use of ‘mahoosive’ .

I think I’m over invested in this thread.

Curiousmouse · 05/01/2022 23:24

Pop of colour 🤮

liverpoolgal82 · 05/01/2022 23:33

I don't mind pop but hate chuck.
Chuck a right here - noooooo

Tatapie · 05/01/2022 23:38

@snowdropsandcrocuses

I rarely pop but I do sometimes chuck..

Chuck it in the oven
Chuck it in the fridge
Chuck it upstairs

Perhaps I'm more aggressive than twee?

lol. Are you Northern by any chance?
roseberrycherry · 05/01/2022 23:48

I don't mind "pop" but HATE brekky, holibobs, Choccy etc

TheyTookTheCrownButItsAllRight · 05/01/2022 23:51

I hate 'ping'

I'll ping over an email
Just ping it over to me

AiringOfGrievances · 06/01/2022 00:14

My worst saying is

a round of toast

Wtf does it even mean? A piece of toast? Several pieces of toast? You offer one to everyone else like a round of drinks? Confused

lborgia · 06/01/2022 00:38

Yep, agreed. I blame Delia, she always used to "pop it in a ramekin" Hmm

lborgia · 06/01/2022 00:42

@Migrainesbythedozen - I think that's the whole point, it's .. trying to think of the word, is it onomatopoeic? It sounds like what it is! Irritating, fake, little-girlish... twee!

scurryfunger · 06/01/2022 01:17

While they are popping to said shop - why do some people add an 's' to the end of the shop's name when one isn't naturally there? 'I'm popping to Tesco's" "I got it from Asda's' etc. Funnily enough, I don't recall it ever being used for Waitrose.

stuntbubbles · 06/01/2022 07:19

That’s because Waitrose is dubby-trose

BellaChagall · 06/01/2022 08:38

This morning I've had an email from a shop which refers to garments as 'garms' Confused

KurtWilde · 06/01/2022 09:22

Can I add 'grown ass..' to the list of sayings that I absolutely cannot stand? You're not a grow ass woman, you're an adult. Please speak like one 😂

And it's only on MN I've ever read the words 'vanishingly small' and it makes me grind my teeth every time I read it.

Sidehustle99 · 06/01/2022 09:46

It must be pretty hard to avoid using ‘one’ as a pronoun, surely.
