Pop it in the oven
Pop it in the fridge
Pop it into your bag.

Arghhh. So twee. So

When did plain old fashioned 'put' get ousted?

Am I alone in my angst?!

And what other words grate on you?

I use pop a lot! And jump.
I hate cuppa, hubby, choccy.

And “look at these jobs we done”, “I done my shopping” nooooo!

EvilPea · 05/01/2022 15:04

Sourced in normal terms is another

“I sourced the ingredients”

No you bought them in tesco

“I sourced a present”

No you bought them

EveMonsoon · 05/01/2022 15:06

I nip to the shops, stick the kettle on and put dinner in the oven. Never pop.

I get really irritated by people who use infantile phrases like “how’s you?” instead of “how are you?”.

thegreylady · 05/01/2022 15:27

Dentist
Pop onto the chair
I’ll just pop these glasses on you
I am going to pop this on now etc etc

gulliblestravels · 05/01/2022 15:33

‘Grab’ too, and ‘munch on’ eeeek.

FlipFlops4Me · 05/01/2022 15:52

@wonderpants

When did give become gifted? That really pisses me off for no reason! Gift is a noun, give is a verb!
This. A thousand times - this, with knobs on!!!
IWasFunBeforeMum · 05/01/2022 16:09

Can I add to this the overuse of 'super' instead of very or really.. "I'm super excited!".. Kill me.

HaveringWavering · 05/01/2022 16:10

@DontTellThemYourNamePike

There's not a lot of popping in NI. But there's a fair bit of bouncing. 'You bounce into the passenger seat and I'll drive'. That kind of thing.

There was a guy on the news a few years back, giving an eye witness account of an accident in his street. 'There was a loud bang. So I bounced out of bed. Then I bounced down the stairs and out the front door. There was a whole commotion, so I bounced down the street... etc' Something like that. It was hilarious and cringey all at once.

I love this, had no idea "bounce" was used this way in NI! And it must come out as sort of "boynce", right?
HaveringWavering · 05/01/2022 16:12

@Stressybetty

I hate "reach out" it's so woke and American cringy, Meghan Markle-like. I just wanted to reach out to you to check you're ok, even got a letter from a company saying it. We're reaching out to our customers etc etc. Aargh no just fuck off!!!! The other one I can't stand is everyone now saying 100%. It's all over TV, no-one is saying ok anymore or yes or I understand etc, it's "yeah. 100%" 🤬
I noticed this too! I suppose at least it's an improvement on the ubiquitous -yet-mathematically- impossible "110%" though? Wink
SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 05/01/2022 16:14

Eee I pop all over the place! And pop everything away.

I also pop a message but it seems very few people know what I mean by this.

Oooo and keepings things/it 100.

Not even 100%. Just 100.

Very youtuber/influencer talking about themselves.

"Yeah I'm coming into the New Year and I'm going to keep things 100 this time"

"Just you be you and keep it 100"

"I'm my authentic self and keepin' it 100"

Stevie6 · 05/01/2022 16:17

"This! A thousand times this!" Is equally annoying

Adododadahdahdah · 05/01/2022 16:21

Style with

As in ‘what can I style these trousers with?’
Confused

ExtremelyDetermined · 05/01/2022 16:26

Gifted instead of given is my pet hate too.

Also cringe used as an adjective "that scene was cringe". No, it was cringey.

Also "I text her" instead of "I texted her"

But pop is totally normal to me and has been all my life.

CompletelyPotts · 05/01/2022 16:26

I hate 'pop' but we don't say it much in Scotland (at least not where I am) so it's mostly on TV it annoys me.

We pop everywhere and everything in my part of Scotland. It doesn't bother me but I can understand why it would if you aren't used to hearing it.

IntermittentParps · 05/01/2022 16:37

Oh, also 'hella' (as a replacement, I think, for 'helluva' as in 'she's got hella heart'.
And things like 'I watched the whole of Game of Thrones again because reasons.'
Just fucking use words properly!

Mommybunny · 05/01/2022 16:49

I read a great article today in the New York Times today that was written by a distinguished linguist at Columbia University, Professor John McWhorter. The article has helped me put all these cringey expressions into perspective. I recommend it.

JaneJeffer · 05/01/2022 16:59

Was that today @Mommybunny?

55Jumbo · 05/01/2022 17:00

I see what you mean re "pop", and also agree "so much this!" is very annoying.

But nothing is anywhere near as irritating as "cuppa"!

Mommybunny · 05/01/2022 17:04

I read the article this morning but it’s dated January 4.

Mommybunny · 05/01/2022 17:05

Oops, just realised I said “today” twice! Bad proofreading…

JaneJeffer · 05/01/2022 17:06
Grin
PickledPeppa · 05/01/2022 17:15

I hate it when people describe going somewhere as "rocking up" to a place. No you didn't "rock up to the school gates this morning". You did what everyone else did and walked, drove or rode there.

PieonaBarm · 05/01/2022 17:26

Hubby gives me the rage. Husband. Also Baba or Bubs 😡

KimmyKimdoo · 05/01/2022 17:52

Popping is quicker than putting.
