Sleep if 100% off the cards. Had my knee replacement today, and fucking hell fire did I underestimate the pain. I had my hip replaced and stupidly thought it would be similar and I'd walk it. Turns out I was a dick to think that.

What did they say about meds @AllThingsServeTheBeam

Shieldingending · 02/01/2022 16:59

My dad had this done, massively painful afterwards but with an amazing result. It will be worth it !! He’s so pleased he persevered with the physio. Take care Flowers

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/01/2022 17:00

Don't be scared of asking for more. Tell them you're in a lot of pain, there will be more they can give you, you need to make a 'fuss.' If it gets unbearable then ask to see the Pain Management Team,I had to do this and they were brilliant.

Just popping back to give you link to the cryocuff I described very poorly upthread.

I hope it is starting to feel a bit less painful today (or they've got your pain relief sorted a bit more). Good luck with the physio!

QOD · 02/01/2022 17:07

@MitheredAndFrazzled ohhh my friend had 2 partials privately and was given one of those on discharge. Fingers crossed I get one

MitheredAndFrazzled · 02/01/2022 17:18

Fingers crossed! My DGM was much older than you when she had hers done (mid-80s) so it would have been a bit different in terms of recovery, but having that made it much easier to ice it, especially early on when the advice was to ice for 15 mins every hour! Apparently they make a huge difference to compliance, presumably because running around with that many bags of ice is very difficult.

Does your friend still have hers? Ask if you can borrow it if you're not given one!

notapizzaeater · 02/01/2022 17:34

I was private, they sent me home just with the cuff (useless not !) so I bought the rest off amazon. I've just leant mine out to someone. During the day it was invaluable- I froze empty water bottles and added that to the water rather than ice cubes. The 'instant' packs where better in the night as I could position them where I needed.

QOD · 02/01/2022 18:02

@MitheredAndFrazzled she’s got problems again so using it in and off (and in the nicest way she’s a real hoarder. Doesn’t let anything go bless her 😂)

GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 02/01/2022 18:18

I really think they don’t realise how painful knee replacements are Sad

DM had hers in 2016 and we were TOTALLY unprepared for the pain and how difficult things would be at home. Luckily due to my job I was aware where to get support. ( she also has arthritic shoulders and other knee needs replacing)

DM needed oxycodone 12 hourly and oxynorm in between 2-4 hourly with paracetamol for a good few weeks.

We had to get Intermidiate care for an OT assessment when she got home ( hospital didn’t ask anything about home environment or do any assessments apart from up and down 5 steps))

Make sure you can get up an on toilet ok pre discharge ( she needed a frame)
OT installed two hand rails to get up and down stairs.
A long handled shoe horn was a life saver
Needed a perching stool as couldn’t stand for long in the kitchen.
She took home the crying cuff and iced knee regularly.

She said physio exercises were like torture and she cried some days whilst I helped bend knee but she said you must do them.

Hope the pain eases soon. Flowers
Do you have someone at home?

polkadotpjs · 02/01/2022 18:26

Oh Op you poor love. Sounds horrendous. I hope you've spoken to doc and got more drugs and manage some sleep tonight

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 02/01/2022 19:15

Pains back. It's been quite controlled all day. Managed to bend it slightly when I was sitting, but now the swelling is horrendous and I can barely move. The Dr is going to come and look at why he thinks it's swelled so badly. I am also now drinking movicol, as 3 days on painkillers hasn't helped me in other ways! Just what I needed!

QOD · 02/01/2022 19:23

Oh man 😞

TwinkleTwinkleLittleStarFightr · 02/01/2022 20:54

How did you get on with the Dr?

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 02/01/2022 20:55

@TwinkleTwinkleLittleStarFightr

How did you get on with the Dr?
He's coming in 20 mins. All the staff have just swapped over. It feels so so pressurised
OP posts:
TwinkleTwinkleLittleStarFightr · 02/01/2022 21:01

Good luck
Let us know how you get on Flowers

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 02/01/2022 21:21

He says the swelling is all due to trauma and they need to do more to get me pain relief. I am no longer stopping opioids, which means I'll probably have to stop in longer but I honestly don't care if this pain subsides

OP posts:
TwinkleTwinkleLittleStarFightr · 02/01/2022 21:27

Hopefully they can sort the pain out better for tonight then.

But increase the movicol dosage if the opiates are increasing!

I hope you sleep better tonight.

Sideswiped · 02/01/2022 21:41

@AllThingsServeTheBeam, I'm so pleased they've realised you've had a tough time. I almost posted this morning that you should ask them to put off discharging you too soon due to you needing a transfusion. The other thing I thought of saying was to ask the physio whether or not your pain is normal for the stage of recovery.
When you feel ready, and depending on what the doctor says, you might still want to do that.
I wish you the very best of luck. Thanks

Sideswiped · 02/01/2022 21:43

Oh, and make sure you keep up the laxatives! The consequence of opioids with nothing in place isn't something you would want to deal with, I'm sure.... Grin

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 03/01/2022 06:52

Much better night. The nurses woke me up a few times to give me more painkillers which actually allowed me to sleep for longer as it wasn't the pain that was waking me. Managed to get to the loo (with help) this morning

OP posts:
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 03/01/2022 13:20

Annd they think I have a clot!! Which will explain all the pain and swelling and redness. I need to go for a scan to confirm

OP posts:
TwinkleTwinkleLittleStarFightr · 03/01/2022 13:25

Great that you had a better night. Everything is more manageable with sleep.

I hoe they get the clot sorted out quickly for you.

QOD · 03/01/2022 14:41

Oh bloody Nora. I’m so glad they’re proactive on the pain. When I had shoulder surgery the consultant properly told off the nurses for not giving me pains relief before I needed it
It’s a major trauma op - got to keep on top
Of it

mummymummymummummum · 03/01/2022 20:02

Goodness, I hope you're ok. Did they manage to get you scanned this afternoon?

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 03/01/2022 21:22

Yes, seconded. Hope that there wasn’t a clot but if there were it was swiftly treated x
