Sleep if 100% off the cards. Had my knee replacement today, and fucking hell fire did I underestimate the pain. I had my hip replaced and stupidly thought it would be similar and I'd walk it. Turns out I was a dick to think that.

I hope you’ve got some more drugs now op.
Ring that buzzer.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 01/01/2022 03:03

It feels a lot easier but now the horrendous loud buzz going off every 30 secs on my leg cuff is keeping me awake. I've tried for an hour with a pillow over my head.

QOD · 01/01/2022 03:17

Oh bless you!
Sounds awful 😞
Can you buzz again now for meds? Private or Nhs?

I’m 40 days away from a knee replacement 👀
I take it you don’t have any ear plugs? Eye mask?
I’ve got them on my list …
I had read that often you’re catheterised for 24 hrs, that would have helped you

I’ve got a re chargeable fan, body deo wipes, face wipes, cooling spray on my list too
Can anyone drop anything to you ?

Ah poor you Op. there’s not many places less conducive to rest than a hospital.

Can I ask, how bad did it get with hip or knee for you to get referred for surgery? And how old? I can suddenly not walk upstairs…

applesandpears33 · 01/01/2022 03:31

I hope you are sleeping now. I am listening to DH sleeping on the sofa and the wind whistling through our windows.

KloppsTeeth · 01/01/2022 03:33

My DH is 2 years on from knee replacement. He was in so much pain on the first night but it eased over time and was glad it has been done.

Make sure you to the exercised the physio tells you to do, my DH cut corners and wishes he had listened.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 01/01/2022 05:12

I've had 2 hours! I was asleep! It was blissful as the nurse turned the buzzing leg cuff off and my bloody drip just started beeping at me!

Hi, I hope you're feeling better. It is late afternoon/early evening here and I am just about to venture into the garden but my husband tempted me with a glass of champagne. It is so hot - its 26 degrees inside one of the cooler parts of our house. Our long haired Birman cat has gone to ground and is lying under a bed as she seems to think that's the coolest place she can find. One summer my sun clipped her coat but it didn't make any difference as I think the fur is somewhat insulating.

Rangoon · 01/01/2022 05:20

That should be my son!

Emerald5hamrock · 01/01/2022 05:27

Happy new year I hope you have a quicker recovery time and the pain has eased off overnight.

QOD · 01/01/2022 07:32

Hopefully you’ve had a bit more but it’s staff change over soon ugh. Worst part of the day for a patient. I remember laying in bed once listening to a nurse sobbing hysterically that they couldn’t take it anymore- Nhs urology ward. Oh my god. 95% of the patients were very elderly and had uti and/or dementia
It was carnage

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 01/01/2022 08:15

I managed about 2 hours. The pain is back with vengeance this morning. Absolute agony. Don't know what to do with myself. No morphine until 9

OP posts:
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 01/01/2022 08:17

@notapizzaeater

Yes it's been worth it ! Still swells and aches a bit but nothing like the pain I'd had before all the time, in fact tonight I managed to kneel down on the kitchen floor - wasn't great but I needed to fix some plumbing - there is no way in hell I'd have been able to last year.
That is making me think it will be worth it. The only issue is for me to be able to kneel I'd have to have the other done!! And thinking of that at the moment is far far from my mind!

Fuuuuuck

Have you been up on your feet yet?

Tell consultant how much pain you’re in - ward rounds are sometimes delayed on nhs aren’t they ?
Asked the nurses if you can have something to supplement the morphine?

dun1urkin · 01/01/2022 08:21

So sorry you’re having that awful wait until you can get more pain relief….
…. I actually decided to comment because I clocked your username!!! I’m a big fan!!!!
Do you want to chat about gunslingers?
I saw the film a couple of years ago and thought it was a pile of shite. Which is your favourite book?

No apparently that's today. I honestly can't see how I'm going to be able to do it. I've got an ice pack again now and it has eased it slightly

The film!! What an absolute pile of rubbish! Nothing at all. It needed at least a 7 season series not a proxy film!

I love The Shinning and pet semetary, and the Gunslinger series. Insomnia too. I don't think I could choose! I've read them all now with the exception of his 2 non fiction and Billy Summers which I had for Xmas and it's sat here waiting for me to finish Richard Osman (who I am actually really enjoying) Do you like Dean Koontz? Or Joe Hill?

dun1urkin · 01/01/2022 08:34

Hmmmm I’ve not read EVERYTHING but there was a point about 20 years ago when I had. But I’ve been a bit less dedicated since then Grin
I reckon my favourite Roland book is the one with The Sweep, a proper western. I can’t actually remember what it’s called.
As for other SKs I think The Stand and The Talisman are my favourites, more recently I’ve enjoyed the Mr Mercedes ones. I think I read so much when I was a teenager I find his style really comforting to return to as an adult.
I don’t read any other similar writers at all, oddly enough. I reckon my all time favourite books are the Aubrey/Maturin series, but am currently working on (and yes, it’s work at times) the unabridged Diary of Samuel Pepys

I am following this with baited breathe
I am on 6 to 8 co codamol 30/500 a day at the mo, I’d massively cut it down as was originally put on it for sciatica then broke my leg and definitely got addicted. But the pains so bad when walking now that I’m back on it.
I need to cut it out pre op so I feel the benefit after (says to do so in pre admission booklet) but I’m tempted to bring in my own bloody pain relief now

Seriously tho vcan someone drop you ear plugs eye mask etc for tonight? A fan ?
I’m in SE coastal Kent so can’t help

QOD · 01/01/2022 08:43

@WinterDeWinter I wrote you a lengthy reply at 3am and lost it
Bottom line is that Nhs is a huge long wait and they have to try less invasive first in most cases
Private- I saw a consultant in nov and having replacement Feb. Would have been sooner but for xmas and covid

I will be ok for ear plugs tonight as I have had the cuff removed and the fluid drip has now finished. I've just had some more oral morphine. And I have my ice rested on my knee

Absolutely no help for the pain - but if you're looking for an easy six series thing Schitts Creek on Netflix is fantastic and really funny.

I know laughter isn't really the best medicine but surely a bit of a laugh is needed?

beckysamantha91 · 01/01/2022 13:16

Start with these films on prime:

Amazon Prime
Worthy but good:
The Help
The Blind Side
The Upside
Depressing but good:
The Mauritanian
Bit shooty:
Man on Fire
The Kitchen
End of the world:
Greenland
Background nice films:
Bend It Like Beckham
Crazy Stupid Love
Sweet Home Alabama
Others:
Sully
Alan Partridge, Alpha Papa
Hustlers
Catch Me If You Can

Then tv series:
bbc iPlayer:
The split (2 series)

Think this is iPlayer but might be Netflix:
The bodyguard (with Keeley hawes)

Netflix:
Unforgotten (3, possibly 4 seasons)

Hi *@AllThingsServeTheBeam* how are you feeling today? Hope pain more under control
The physio has just had me up again. In a lot of pain again now. My knee was so buggered before the op it is making it harder for me to try and bend and straighten it. I have a long road ahead
