Sleep if 100% off the cards. Had my knee replacement today, and fucking hell fire did I underestimate the pain. I had my hip replaced and stupidly thought it would be similar and I'd walk it. Turns out I was a dick to think that.

@crankysaurus

I'd agree with that, I broke my ankle what's now the year before last and an ice pack/ freezer cold pack was very effective for months afterwards.
I have to say this is the best I've felt since my spinal died off. I think it's a mix of the blood actually circulating now as well

Happy New Year, OP! Hope you feel better soon.

crankysaurus · 01/01/2022 01:13

Onwards and upwards then, hopefully it'll be a nice quick recovery.

Ouch you poor thing......I feel sorry for you. Not too long to go until 2am....make sure you start asking for it about 15 mins before so they have time to get it!
I had those weird inflating things on my legs after I had my c sections. The first time my legs stayed numb most of the night and I hated the inflatable thing going for hours.

Do you know when you will get to go home?

Hopefully by Monday. They say 2 or 3 nights. Might be lucky and it be Sunday I suppose. But I honestly can't see it! The noise is annoying me more than the inflation!

I'm awake. And wishing you a speedy recovery.

I've been trying to sleep since about 10 but the amount of fireworks intermittently being set off all evening has hampered my efforts and ever since midnight with masses going off I've been absolutely wide awake.

Where abouts in the world are you?

notapizzaeater · 01/01/2022 01:17

It's the most painful op I've ever had (and I've had a few! )

I wasn't expecting it, nor was I expecting it to last so long. Take everything they offer for the next few weeks ! One of the best things I bought was instant ice packs you squeeze to activate. I kept a box at the side of the bed to use in the middle of the night, I had a shelf in the freezer with ice packs on.

MamaWeasel · 01/01/2022 01:23

Not too long to go until your pain relief now. Smile

I have to say that I am glad I am not alone! Sorry you had a bad time of it too. Was it all worth it in the end?

Ask for more they can give it

BobbyBleu · 01/01/2022 01:24

Hopefully you get home soon OP, although it's good to take advantage of the assistance in hospital! Tempting to do too much at home.

Do you have someone to help you when you get home?

Staffordshire! UK. The room is really hot, heating probably set to winter setting even though it's spring temps out. My ice is going to melt!

@AllThingsServeTheBeam oh no I feel for you! It's so unseasonably warm isn't it. I had to take a layer of bedding off and open my window earlier as it's so blinking warm!!

Final countdown to more pain meds for you and then hopefully this time in an hour you'll be zzz

BobbyBleu · 01/01/2022 01:26

Ah not too far from me, I'm in Cheshire.

I hate how hot hospitals are! That makes it hard to sleep too!

givethatbabyaname · 01/01/2022 01:30

Funnily enough, just yesterday I happened across a clip of Jonathan Ross interviewing David Attenborough and Steve Carrell. DA had had two knee replacements, SC had just had a hip replacement. They were comparing notes. Quite funny and worth a Google. SC said yes, knees def more painful than hips

Catquestion · 01/01/2022 01:40

My friend’s Dad had a knee replacement this year and he’s said it’s totally worth the initial pain and discomfort.

What kind of things do you like watching? Emily in Paris requires absolutely no thought whatsoever and is very lighthearted (it’s almost so bad it’s good) I also loved You, which is about a stalker, but the character development is quite good.

Friday Night Dinner is another good, easy watch

Hellocatshome · 01/01/2022 01:41

In case you are interested, number 2 in the top 80s songs is Every breath you take by Sting

thefelineofthespecies · 01/01/2022 01:41

Sorry to hear you're in so much pain OP. Just a thought - I had 4 joints replaced in my hand a few years ago. It transpired the nurses didn't read the surgeon's instructions to cut open the cast if my hand swelled too much Hmm Of course, my hand swelled up but in my post aesthetic haze I just kept describing it as pain rather than pressure. They just kept giving me more oramorph so I was increasingly off my face but still couldn't sleep. It wasn't until the next morning when a doctor read the notes and opened up the cast that I got any relief.

I realise you said they'd opened yours a bit and given you ice so it sounds like they've accounted for swelling but I noticed you'd mentioned throbbing so it might be worth using that word with them if you haven't.

Hope you get some sleep soon Flowers

QuestionableMouse · 01/01/2022 01:44

My aunt was given a sleeping pill after her knee replacement- might be worth asking about!

Hope you're feeling a bit better by now - keep asking for pain relief - there's no hard limit on oramorph iirc so they can keep topping you up (within reason, obvs) Also if you can take paracetamol, take some because it works better together (iirc it makes opioid painkillers more effective!)

You might also feel better in a different position so ask about that too.

I've been playing a daft game called sliding seas and it's been great as a distraction.

Hellocatshome · 01/01/2022 01:45

Sorry Police not Sting. And number 1 is Last Christmas by Wham! Boy George Karma Chameleon was robbed!

mandajmo · 01/01/2022 01:46

Happy New Knee! I have just had my knee replaced and know how your feeling. Nighttime is worse, did you have a spinal or GA? I'm almost 3 weeks post op and spent 7 nights in hospital. I was on 20mg OxyContin slow release twice a day with options to add fast release supplements as needed. It is painful but it will get better x

TwinkleTwinkleLittleStarFightr · 01/01/2022 01:47

What do you have planned for when you are recovered OP? Something nice, I hope.

BlackeyedSusan · 01/01/2022 01:48

@AllThingsServeTheBeam

Is everyone having a good new year?
so far so good... the last ten minuites of the old year were a bit stressful. some bugger set off a firework about 10 feet from the flats, and it hit my window right next to where I was sitting. still got lots of adrenaline going round.
notapizzaeater · 01/01/2022 01:49

Yes it's been worth it ! Still swells and aches a bit but nothing like the pain I'd had before all the time, in fact tonight I managed to kneel down on the kitchen floor - wasn't great but I needed to fix some plumbing - there is no way in hell I'd have been able to last year.

MitheredAndFrazzled · 01/01/2022 01:53

See if you can get a cryocuff for when you go home — definitely the easiest way to ice something. It's like a flask with a tube that connects to a thing that wraps around your knee, you run the water from the flask to the knee bandage, and the back again when it's been iced long enough (sorry, I'm tired and explaining that badly!). You put big chunks of ice (we froze them in big yoghurt pots) and water in the flask and it stays really cold all day, so you can use it without having to keep re-freezing it.

My DGM's has been used by various younger sporty family members too. Grin

Hopefully after a day or two it will feel an adult lot better. Flowers
