Asked someone to move from the disabled bay

No real point to the thread really. But today instead of us driving off and trying to find somewhere else to park in our town, dp stopped and told someone who was just sat in a disabled bay with the engine idling with no badge to move (nicely). The guy did move and pulled up further along. We were able to park up with a much shorter walk!

Why do people think it's ok to park in disabled bays when they don't need them? We would have normally just driven off and I would have possibly had to have stopped in the car if it was too far for me to walk. People don't seem to care their actions have concequences.

“Cos I’ll only be 10 mins” is usually the abskwer

Answer** Hmm

That 10 mins could have seriously buggered my morning up. I find people really have no idea. They're not even being malicious, they just don't see the problem. Maybe this guy will think twice now he's been called out on it

Because they don't think.
Or they do think, but think they are justified for whatever reason. Its raining. Its a couple of minutes. Its late at night. Nowhere else. Small child.
Or sometimes... Good reason but not blue badge worthy (temporary disability, awaiting badge, elderly etc) but does are the rarity.

See if it is someone who genuinely needs the space but doesn't have a badge I honestly wouldn't mind. Broken legs etc. But this person was obviously just waiting for someone and he was able to do that further on. Albeit on double yellows

I see this all time badge on display but driver sat in car whole time. Meaning no one can use it. If the driver is disabled but staying in the car they can park anywhere and wait. If it’s a passenger park further away and then pick up closer (even if they managed walk around whole shop but last 10 metre to a non blue badge space is beyond them) As a blue badge holder I’d say least 1/4 spaces are hogged by sitting people drives me up the wall.

JetRocket · 12/12/2021 15:35

I know it’s not exactly the same thing but I get really annoyed with people doing this with parent child bays. Because you don’t need a badge they’ll actually just park in them and go in shopping. Usually because they have massive fancy cars. With a toddler and baby, on my own, double pram and two bulky car seats its so hard to park in a normal bay as there’s a 99% chance I won’t be able to get them in/out upon return as people will pull up close to my doors. It makes an already hard task feeling so defeating and overwhelming.

Parking in bays that others rely on, just because you’re lazy, is never ok.

Hoppinggreen · 12/12/2021 15:40

I turfed someone out of a disabled bay who walked with a stick for my Mum who literally can’t stand at all.
I asked if he was a blue badge holder and he said no so I politely pointed out that the spaces were for blue badge holders. He said he walked with a stick so I suggested that long term he should look into applying for a Blue Badge but for now he needed to move. He grumbled a bit but did move.
If there had been another space we could have used I probably wouldn’t have bothered but we needed a disabled space to have room to transfer my mum to the wheelchair
I would happily do it again

BoredZelda · 12/12/2021 15:45

This is not an appropriate suggestion. If we’re parking in a blue badge space to take my daughter somewhere, we need the space to get her and her stuff in and out of the car. It has nothing to do with how far she can walk.

Pick on people abusing the spaces, not on people using them for the very thing they are designed for.

BoredZelda · 12/12/2021 15:47

I know it’s not exactly the same thing but I get really annoyed with people doing this with parent child bays.

It’s not even nearly the same.

Akire · 12/12/2021 15:49

Yes but when you are out of the car with your daughter you don’t leave one adult in the car in driving seat holding on any second for you to appear do you. The car can be moved closer and plenty space to get in on end of a row or even at that point use a blue badge space. You don’t need hold that space ransoms for 3hours because you need a wide space. Totally different if you park up and everyone is out of space but it’s not a waiting space is it

iwanttobeonleave · 12/12/2021 15:49

I recently saw a mum from school who I had previously completely respected park in a disabled bay.
It's completely changed my view of her. What reasonable person would do this?!

@BoredZelda

They’re both designated spaces for a specific use, being abused by lazy and thoughtless people. This causing their intended users to either not be able to carry out their trip or to do so with significant difficulty.

Whilst there are many differences, hence I said ‘it’s the same but…’ to not acknowledge some basic fundamental similarities is just obtuse. Many people with children who have additional nerds also rely on child spaces to ensure their security.
My sibling for example; they’re an adult now and blue badge but as a child relied on parent child.

StormyTeacups · 12/12/2021 16:03

Well, one is often the difference between being able to shop at all, and one might mean parking further away. And one is legally minding, the other isn't.

Mudflaps · 12/12/2021 16:03

I'm a permit holder and park behind them blocking them in, works a treat.

Theremoresefulday · 12/12/2021 16:04

Was this on an on-street bay?

Are you sure she wasn't with someone who was disabled?

I used to often give a lift to a friend who was disabled and often what I'd do is park in the disabled bay with her blue badge, take her into her appointment, then go back and park elsewhere until she was ready to come out, then do it in reverse.

I could have stayed with her at the appointment or waited in the car, but I felt I shouldn't use a disabled space for all that time when I didn't need to.

daisypond · 12/12/2021 16:09

It’s not the same at all. Parent and child bays should be stopped.

JetRocket · 12/12/2021 16:09

*’it’s not the same but…’

Sundancerintherain · 12/12/2021 16:10

Because their convenience trumps your needs.
I had a disabled parking bay allocated to me at work and a delivery driver parked his van in it and refused to move . In doing so he had blocked the ramp.
I sweetly informed him that it was fine, I would block him in and then he could carry me ( & my sticks) up the stairs. He was shame faced then moved. I'd like to think that he wouldn't use a disabled baby of any description again , but I doubt it ........

iwanttobeonleave · 12/12/2021 16:11

Margaret - no, it was at the gym, I recognised her car then watched her leave the gym and drive off.
I was quite shocked tbh!

FazedNotPhased · 12/12/2021 16:11

Why do people always bring up P+C spaces on these threads, as if your decision to have a baby is somehow comparable to being disabled Hmm

Theremoresefulday · 12/12/2021 16:12

@JetRocket I park in parent and child bays when the disabled bays are full.

I have a blue badge.

I don’t have a fancy car though.

Does it make you feel good to inwardly rant?
