Entire Tube Line to close?! Is this real or a bargain tactic

Some sources speculate that it is the jubilee line, some sources speculate that it's the bakerloo line. I admit to being personally invested as DH commutes to canary wharf from north London and uses this line daily; if it closes, he has to get the DLR and you can imagine how crowded that would be as Jubilee line is already packed...

I'd say a bargaining tactic... Can't see them ever actually closing a whole line.

1990s · 05/12/2021 13:04

It’s pretty shocking, but I also think it’s likely to be true if you look at TFLs cash situation.

The government needs to get their finger out of their arse and give them the money, it’s a no brainer.

It’s not TFLs fault they lost all their income overnight, and reducing services just makes people drive more - against government environmental targets, and be crowded into services that remain - worsening the pandemic.

mynameiscalypso · 05/12/2021 13:06

I am firmly hoping it's a bargaining tactic. I live between both lines and either closure would be a nightmare for us.

onlychildhamster · 05/12/2021 13:15

@1990s I can believe thst but will government let them sink? Of course all the stations are important but canary wharf is where the finance sector is? My DH said it wouldn't affect him as much as his colleague who commutes from leicester- changes from northern to Jubilee

Bargaining tactic.

But they also say sharp reductions on a lot of bus routes, and I think that might happen

CorrBlimeyGG · 05/12/2021 13:48

Boris Johnson and George Osborne majorly screwed over TfL. It's a complex situation, but this gives an overview.

TfL are in quite a bit of trouble. If we (collective we, the govt, the public etc) want it to keep running then it needs funding. The same as for all public transport around the country.

TfL is unusual in that the majority of its funding comes from fares - in many other capital cities, the funding comes mostly from the govt.

We really need serious investment in nationwide public transport in this country, along with a campaign to encourage people to use it.

onlychildhamster · 05/12/2021 14:32

@Lockheart I don't really know anyone who drives to work in the city or canary wharf! Everyone takes public transport! Of course this has gone down due to WFH but a sizeable number have returned to the office.

Annoyingly for me personally as I’m about to turn 60, I think they may drop the free travel for all 60+ Londoners and put it in line with the general freedom pass age of 67. Annoying but probably fair. And one way to up their income. Closing any line would be hugely resisted. You can’t drive in central London without incurring a huge congestion charge, parking charge and encountering traffic jams. We should be investing more in public transport not less.

Badbadbunny · 05/12/2021 19:06

Perhaps it's time to increase fares and reduce/remove the number of people who get exemptions from fares.

DorotheaDiamond · 05/12/2021 19:07

If it is true it has to be hammersmitt and city line…there’s nothing on there that isn’t served by another line!

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 05/12/2021 19:10

Waterloo and city? Would anyone notice?

AtlasPine · 05/12/2021 19:49

Fares don’t need increasing - they are a lot. They could run less trains out of rush hour on some lines though.

twilightcafe · 05/12/2021 20:38

Circle Line could go, and no-one would miss it.
Get shot of the Bakerloo line. The bit north of Paddington is served by other lines and overground trains. South of Paddington is well served by other tube lines in walking distance.

You should see it as 8am! Rammo.

Orrrr they could fund it properly and continue to encourage people to use public transport for all the myriad benefits it has. Ideally.
Flapjacker48 · 05/12/2021 22:06

I read in the paper that bus fares could go up to £2.50

HundredMilesAnHour · 05/12/2021 22:22

They're not going to close an entire tube line. It's just our stupid mayor trying to play hardball (badly).

UntilBubleSings · 05/12/2021 22:25

TfL need to do something about fare evaders. I see loads double gate and push through every day

julieca · 05/12/2021 22:58

Circle is heavily used by tourists.

dreamingbohemian · 05/12/2021 23:11

No way they'll actually shut a whole line

If they did though it would be Bakerloo over Jubilee

Fares are already pretty high! I wonder how much it would save to axe the night tube

BananaBlue · 05/12/2021 23:22

What exemptions are there?
dreamingbohemian · 05/12/2021 23:38

Yeah they already removed free fares for 11-18 year olds, many of whom need public transport to get to school

JaniceBattersby · 05/12/2021 23:41

It’s levelling down. London will see what the rest of the country has to put up with after our own transport infrastructure went to shit gradually over the past decade.

There’s been no intervention up here when the last remaining rural bus services were stopped because local government could not afford to keep subsidising them. Whole communities cut off, kids unable to get to school, people unable to get to work.

So actually, it’s a bit bloody rich of London to expect a bailout to the tune of billions.

PermanentTemporary · 05/12/2021 23:44

Except that the earnings of London subsidise the entire country (no I'm not a londoner).
