Some sources speculate that it is the jubilee line, some sources speculate that it's the bakerloo line. I admit to being personally invested as DH commutes to canary wharf from north London and uses this line daily; if it closes, he has to get the DLR and you can imagine how crowded that would be as Jubilee line is already packed...

I switched to WFH after yesterday’s unpleasantness and overcrowding.
@ClaudiaWankleman trains were way cheaper under British Rail. Yes catering was not good, but trains weren't that much more than coaches. Now there is a vast price differential and it is much cheaper for me to drive anywhere than take the train.
Trains were cheaper to buy and maintain as they were simpler. "Modern" trains have to be compliant with lots of new rules/laws, such as safety, disability access, automatic doors, closed system toilets, etc etc. Each carriage now costs multi million pounds whereas the "older" style simple coaches cost just a fraction of that.

It's why the East Coast Main Line made a profit between franchises - the cost of maintaining and leasing/owning the stock was very small as it was generally very old rolling stock.

I don’t miss the old trains.

I have PTSD from the slam door ones.

@Badbadbunny if you say so. Except the fares rocketed as soon as the private companies took over. Some of us are old enough to remember the difference.
Train fares now are a bloody disgrace.

Yes, the introduction of new trains happened about the same time as the privatisation. Quite simply, the Govt couldn't afford the cost of the new trains required by legislation, so they "outsourced" the cost to the private sector.

I predict a short term funding deal will be made the day before the existing one runs out. The work from home guidance re-introduction being used as a reason.

Wouldn't be so sure. The last deal was done right to the wire. My friend work up not knowing if she had a job or not

My dad is a jubilee driver and they've been warned by the unions. He's 60 and has worked for them for 20 years. We'll all be devastated if he loses his job and he'd never find another that pays the same and isn't physically demanding. He financially supports my Nan as well as himself and I don't know how we'd all cope without his salary.

onlychildhamster · 08/12/2021 21:05

@MeredithMae that the jubilee line would be closed? Wow thats awful for your family :( I am sorry.

Warned jubilee or bakerloo I meant to say.

@twilightcafe

Circle Line could go, and no-one would miss it. Get shot of the Bakerloo line. The bit north of Paddington is served by other lines and overground trains. South of Paddington is well served by other tube lines in walking distance.
Would literally double my commute time. The Bakerloo is the shittiest and worst-serviced line though. Those trains...!
