Entire Tube Line to close?! Is this real or a bargain tactic

Some sources speculate that it is the jubilee line, some sources speculate that it's the bakerloo line. I admit to being personally invested as DH commutes to canary wharf from north London and uses this line daily; if it closes, he has to get the DLR and you can imagine how crowded that would be as Jubilee line is already packed...

£5.5b has been lost to furlough fraud!

Look st what that money could of done instead, supported public transport instead.

If the government can't see fit to help companies when they are on their knees through little fault of their own then literally wtaf. Absolutely raging about this.

Now Saddiq is considering a greater london charge for cars not registered in London to be charged 5.50. This is going to destroy London.

Meanwhile money is being wasted elsewhere.

Why should Londond vehicle tax be spent outside of London, bring it back to be spent on London roads!

hygtt · 06/12/2021 20:04

Tbf furlough fraud is a drop in the ocean compared to track & trace & some of the other contracts.

Ozanj · 06/12/2021 20:06

It wouldn’t be the Jubilee (it’s the best commuter line and probably earns a lot of money from canary wharf commuters) or Circle lines. It would probably be the Metropolitan or Circle.

Ozanj · 06/12/2021 20:07

CENTRAL lol

True the whole lot is a huge waste of money.
Flapjacker48 · 06/12/2021 21:43

@Sallycinnamum If British rail had been given the money that private train companies have been given by the Government since 1996 he would have had the best railway in the world - but of course this (taxpayers) money mainly went to executive pay and shareholders in companies since stagecoach since privatisation

The useless mayor of London. Can somebody tell me what does he do aside from babbling about diversity and London is open?

SquirmOfEels · 06/12/2021 22:26

@julieca

Agree it's a levelling down. London will still have buses to get around. But a cut in public transport in central London will affect tourism.
Don't count on that - they're looking to reduce services on about 100 routes.
Wrink · 06/12/2021 22:37

Boris and his buddies playing their Etonian bully boy tricks again.

Stole £47m from us for a garden bridge that was never built.

Stole from us for a track and trace that never worked.

Stole from the NHS for years, is allowing Covid to run it into the ground, will bring in an insurance based profiteering system run by a mate of his before his time is out.

Ditto law and order with the Met Police.

Now TfL.

Same old game: deprive of resources, state it isn’t fit for purpose, install your mates to run it, cream off the profits and power.

We’re all being buggered over and over by venal public school boys but we’re too stupid to notice.

SisyphusDad · 06/12/2021 23:31

It may well be a negotiating tactic, but equally it does make financial 'sense'. I'm guessing that the tube network has very high fixed costs, so closing one line completely is going to save far more than cutting capacity on all lines by, say, 10%.

Sallycinnamum · 07/12/2021 08:16

I'm not quite sure I understand @Flapjacker48.

The rail franchise model meant owning groups shouldered the financial burden and paid the government a fixed sum. So for example I know one medium size toc would pay the government £2.5million a month as per their franchise agreement.

Of course now the government is shouldering the financial burden, which is why they're now asking train companies to slash their finances. Ultimately it will be passengers that suffer.

He has transformed the London bus network. He’s kept public transport running at near full capacity during Covid which mayors in other cities haven’t. Don’t let your racist shit head views cloud the facts.
dameofdilemma · 07/12/2021 13:05

Public transport is relied on by the poorest in society. Cutting funding impacts them disproportionately.

This applies just as much in London as anywhere else.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/12/2021 13:07

He has transformed the bus network by cutting lines and consolidating routes, which was not done for the benefit of the public. And he most definitely did not keep public transport running at near full capacity, some lines were down to 20%. Many services were absolutely packed with no possibility to keep social distancing. Is it racist to point this out?

SquirmOfEels · 07/12/2021 15:30

I think the unacceptability of closing a tube line is being used as the stalking horse for 'onky' slashing bus services. Big cuts to them are also on the table, but it's not really catching anyone's attention, because that's all gone on to the tube

Quite possible I much prefer the bus to the Tube but the cycle lanes have caused issues there.

I hadn't thought of Boris wanting to hand TfL to his mates. Scary.

LionPhish · 07/12/2021 20:44

I suspect it will be either the Central or the Victoria Lines and I suspect they are using this strike action when both are closed on EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND to justify the decision... meanwhile lines like the Northern line are only closed once / twice - yet serve areas which are much better served by bus routes, overground and night buses. Plus with many stations in walkable distances in relatively safe areas.

LionPhish · 07/12/2021 20:45

No he really hasn't. I had to commute on the Victoria Line and it was cut to 10-12 minutes for a train. The night time returns were hell as most stopped in Seven Sisters.

Tube today which should have been running every 1-2 minutes was running every 4-6 minutes. It is still not back to pre-pandemic levels.

StormyCornishSeas · 07/12/2021 20:50

@twilightcafe

Circle Line could go, and no-one would miss it. Get shot of the Bakerloo line. The bit north of Paddington is served by other lines and overground trains. South of Paddington is well served by other tube lines in walking distance.
Not the circle line!!!! Thats the line which I use when I'm come in from Paddington. I know there's the district but it's just not the same
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/12/2021 20:54

8Tube today which should have been running every 1-2 minutes was running every 4-6 minutes. It is still not back to pre-pandemic levels*

The evening peak was an absolute nightmare today. Victoria line was packed, it was running at big intervals.

IrishMamaMia · 07/12/2021 20:55

I regularly using Victoria for work (don't wfh) and leisure and while there's the odd gap in service or issue it's been fine. Passenger numbers are high also. I think it's a main artery and they'd never sever it. The bakerloo on the other hand is so old. I think it will stop working soon if they don't upgrade it so seems like one that could potentially be under threat. I hope not thought obviously!

LionPhish · 07/12/2021 20:58

@ChardonnaysPetDragon it was an absolute freaking nightmare. Took us four tubes to get on one as well because I had a toddler... It was the same the last couple of times I've been on it.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/12/2021 22:27

In Victoria they weren’t letting people down the escalator to the trains because the platforms were packed. I cannot even imagine travelling with a toddler in this.

But yes, let’s close down one of the lines after wasting billions on Crossrail.

That's pretty normal in rush hour at Victoria, and some of the other rail/tube stations. Things aren't quite back to normal yet but they're getting there.
LionPhish · 08/12/2021 12:09

Well there's already been a serious incident / death due to the strike action sadly and the subsequent over crowding.
