Baked beans on toast with cheese is the food of the gods

No time to prep proper food today so we had beans on rye toast, slathered with butter, grated mature cheddar on top and lots of black pepper.

Kids had just beans as above and I fried some green pepper and sugar snaps peas to add to mine.

Initially I felt guilty about giving kids a lazy tea but by the end I felt no guilt at all, it was so bloody good 😊

That's all.

Well, if that's your version of 'no time to prep proper food today" I'm done for. Beans on toast at my house is an at least once a week staple.

Twospaniels · 30/11/2021 18:55

You’re not wrong!

But my version is buttered toast, scrambled egg on top, then grated cheese and then the baked beans, which melts the cheese.

Absolutely perfect cold day comfort lunch.

Not here, no one likes beans on toast in our house. We have them occasionally eg with sausage and mash but never on toast.

Poached eggs on toast with butter and marmite is my goto quick comfort meal.

You lost me at rye bread I'm afraid...

BleuJay · 30/11/2021 19:01

No baked beans in this house!

But we do love Welsh rarebit.

Comedycook · 30/11/2021 19:01

I actually love rye bread but not with beans!

TheBabyBoo · 30/11/2021 19:02

I always imagine Gods going more for things like roast swan and pomegranates really/

LubaLuca · 30/11/2021 19:06

I like all of the things you mention, but not all on the same plate. Cheese and beans on toast requires no dicking around, and definitely doesn't need green veg (with toast! Confused).

mum2jakie · 30/11/2021 19:08

Lol - adding the green veg is so very Mumsnet! God forbid you ate a meal without fresh veg!

BlueFlavour · 30/11/2021 19:08

I absolutely love beans on toast. Minimum two layers of butter, and exactly as you say beans cheese black pepper and a cup of tea.
Perfection.

A580Hojas · 30/11/2021 19:09

I like beans on toast with cheese for an every day wfh lunch or brunch. Couldn't describe it as "food of the gods". I reserve that for really delicious food that someone else has cooked - say in a restaurant or out for dinner or a gorgeous takeaway. Beans on toast with cheese is kinda run of the mill?

Hopeful16 · 30/11/2021 19:12

As kids we had this as Sunday tea after a busy day out. Toast, topped with beans and then a fried egg and a layer of melted cheese on top. It was and shall always be referred to as a Beany-eggy-cheesey-thing and was always very welcome and delicious. 😋

Fabuleuse · 30/11/2021 19:12

This is not AIBU but YABVVVVVU, baked beans make me shudder with their vileness. Just have toasted cheese, and no need for the fancy green veg!

Babymamamama · 30/11/2021 19:12

I agree but do my own version. I make grilled cheese on toast under the grill. With wholemeal bread. Meantime heat up the beans on the hob, stir in some butter, black pepper and bbq sauce. Then serve beans on top of the cheese on toast. Yum.

PestoPlum · 30/11/2021 19:13

Green pepper and sugar snap peas? With beans on toast? Confused

bethabean · 30/11/2021 19:14

Has to be Branston beans for me!

bengalcat · 30/11/2021 19:16

Mini beans and cheese on roasties features in this years M and S Christmas nibbles

Changechangychange · 30/11/2021 19:16

You should swap the rye bread for a jacket potato, but otherwise you are completely right!

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/11/2021 19:17

You need marmite Grin

CorvusPurpureus · 30/11/2021 19:17

I live in a country where you can't buy them.

They're established desirable contraband from any colleagues visiting the UK.

Cheese, chilli flakes all melted together, straight out of a soup bowl. Yum.

thefirstmrsrochester · 30/11/2021 19:17

Mina Beans are a staple in my house, chopped onion, mushrooms, bacon and chilli fried in butter mixed into beans, cheese optional, so called after my Uni pal Mina who kept the flat fed on this amazing delicacy.

bethabean · 30/11/2021 19:18

Oh and I put slices of cheese underneath the beans for a thick melty layer and then grate more on top

EwwSprouts · 30/11/2021 19:19

Grilled cheese on toast with baked beans on top. Better cheese to beans ratio!

Fantails · 30/11/2021 19:20

Sounds delicious! I'm feeling extremely smug because I found a pre cooked from scratch bolognaise in the freezer last night. Thawed it all day and just had it on lentil pasta with grated cheese on top. And a glass of wine! Bliss after a busy day with started very early.

Bonnealle · 30/11/2021 19:22

You need to make cheese on toast (no butter), then tip the beans on. As a child I used to love the little bean indents it made. Fried green pepper and sugar snaps sound odd to me, but I’ve seen some weird combinations on here - boiled eggs in lasagne (yuck)!
