Baked beans on toast with cheese is the food of the gods

No time to prep proper food today so we had beans on rye toast, slathered with butter, grated mature cheddar on top and lots of black pepper.

Kids had just beans as above and I fried some green pepper and sugar snaps peas to add to mine.

Initially I felt guilty about giving kids a lazy tea but by the end I felt no guilt at all, it was so bloody good 😊

I will admit that while the dc have theirs in the traditional on top of toast manner, I prefer mine with toast on the side. No sogginess that way.

I like beans with a bit of chipotle Tabasco stirred in, and small chunks of cheddar melted in so they're separate little blobs not a coalesced surface. Or sometimes an egg poached in the beans (easy in the microwave) until the yolk is just set but still bright yellow.
Buttered toast with it.

My regular evening meal as a student was spagetti hoops on toast with melted grated cheese
Imv beans is too sweet to go with cheese.

You have to add a lot of black pepper. I might add a bit of Marmite next time, but like @RobertSmithsLipstick I’m worried about gilding the lily

I see your baked beans on toast with grated mature cheddar and raise you baked beans on toast with crumbled Garlic and Fine Herb Boursin on top. Delicious.

I'd much prefer that if I was a god (works for mere mortals too, though).

2 layers of butter minimum One melted in and one on top, maybe another if that melts in too. Just toast your toast really well. That’s the secret.

So basically the toast is just the vessel on which you consume your butter 🤣

I quite like how leaves go slightly warm and droopy when they're mixed with hot things.

Have you ever tried fried lettuce? Sounds vile but it's honestly delicious! You cut a whole head of something like little gem in half lengthwise, oil, salt and pepper the cut sides and then into a hot frying pan. Add a dash of lemon juice at the end and it's divine. One of my favourite things. Would go nicely with cheesy beanos

For me the only addition to cheesy beano is crispy bacon bits. Stirred through it's lovely.

Amusingly a friend of DH's thought the beans on toast meal recently was for one of the kids to have while everyone else had a butternut squash risotto (he popped in unannounced at dinner time), but it was actually for me.

We had cheese on toast this evening. I did get some meat out of the freezer for dinner but neither DH or I were hungry enough to be worth cooking.
