...what sort of clothes and accessories did you wear?

(Note: my username is coincidental and relates to my job!)

I used to like to look smart so…Black bootcut trousers in a very cheap feeling fabric (yuck) and for going out glitter tops (like a pot of glitter thrown at it) - spray on hair glitter too! Tops which sort of flared out from the elbow a little bit (think Abba but a milder format)

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/11/2021 20:21

I’m a bit older, but massive jeans, very low rise. Teeny hanky top. I had one from river island which was a diamond shape thin material for my front and the back was basically bootlaces that held it on to me.

Loads of glitter everywhere. I had hair glitter and roll on body glitter. Gems on springs for my hair. Diamanté eyeliner stuck to false eyelashes.

Thong on display at the back because the jeans were so low.

I must have looked a sight.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/11/2021 20:23

@BlowDryRat

Bootcut jeans and a t-shirt. Some of my friends wore those jeans with colourful fabric around the ankles.
I bought some of those in Manchester. I thought I looked very cool. Eventually I unpicked the stitches and took the fabric off and had a fab pair of jeans.
Knittingnanny · 27/11/2021 20:23

My middle son was 16 and eldest son 18 then, my abiding memories are the trailing jeans hems thing and wearing trainers til they literally were in holes. Not because I couldn’t afford to buy them new ones it was just a thing, the older the better.
The odd socks thing was still around then but thank goodness the curtains hair style was over. My hairdresser was itching to snip off the curtains for about 3 years!
I remember an older wiser mum telling me hair and fashion was not worth getting into any arguments about.

BakewellGin1 · 27/11/2021 20:23

I was 17 in 2000...

Shimmery two piece trouser/triangle bottom tops from Paragon

Lace up fastening jeans - boot cut

French Connection Tshirts

ladycarlotta · 27/11/2021 20:24

ew, the raggedy trouser hems that got soaked in puddles. Awful.

Remember those photo-style skin-tight stretch t-shirts? I had a few of those. One had a 'bollywood' kind of theme, another was grey with vague Japanese motifs, another high-saturation desert island images.

Hair jewels. Nail jewels. Stick-on face jewels.

Helpimfalling · 27/11/2021 20:25

Adidas poppers
Tracksuits ( fml)

Pedal pushers
Vest tops from bay trading.

Backless shoes. Loafers.

Tripledogdare · 27/11/2021 20:25

Mostly ridiculously large jeans. Also a brief horrifying period of the skirt trouser combo.

GreenWhiteViolet · 27/11/2021 20:26

I was 13. Baggy jeans and band t-shirts or hoodies for casual wear. Goth aesthetic the rest of the time - all black, lots of floor-length skirts. I had a top that was black velvet with spiderweb-pattern lace which I adored.

I spent a lot of time in Camden Market. I very much admired the platform boots with flames going up the sides but could never afford them (and probably couldn't have walked in them anyway Grin ).

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 27/11/2021 20:28

I remember a phase of walking round with my shoelaces untied but tucked into the sides of my trainers and the tongue pulled out Grin

1Dandelion1 · 27/11/2021 20:29

Omg. I still have my favourite top and trousers i went out clubbing in. The trousers were grey bootcut with a sheen and the top was a square of black fabric that had straps over shoulder and glitter across the front.
My mum hated the glitter - its probably still shedding!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/11/2021 20:30

Definitely the FCUK T-shirts. Very tight fitting.

I had one that read

FCUK Your Plaice or mine.

Had a picture of a fish underneath. I have terribly conservative parents. I don’t know what they thought.

YukoandHiro · 27/11/2021 20:31

I turned 18 in the year 2000. I was wearing enormous brown cord trousers and band t shirts. I also had an amazing purple suede biker jacket and I have no idea where it went. I've regretted letting go of that for decades

katmarie · 27/11/2021 20:31

I turned 18 in 2000, this has taken me back massively. Bootcut jeans way too long, or combat trousers with things dangling off them. buffalo trainers or vans, hoodies with the thumb holes (I'd love one now haha), way too much eyeliner. I had a variety of rock band tshirts, and a long black coat. Also loads of friendship bracelets and tat round my wrists, and a necklace with my star sign on it worn as a choker. I also had half a dozen hoodies and jackets that had belonged to boyfriends/ex boyfriends. They were the best, so comfy. Corset tops and denim skirts to go out to the pub, or very tight skater tshirts and jeans, platform heels, and a bag in the shape of a corset. A purple velvet mini dress to go clubbing. I wore that to a foam party once, that was a mistake!

Also, when I was 14-15 I bought the most amazing full length black crushed velvet maxi skirt from tammy girl. I loved that skirt and wore it to death. I'd wear it again if I still had it!

YukoandHiro · 27/11/2021 20:32

And spending all my student loan in Miss Sixty

LBOCS2 · 27/11/2021 20:33

Baggies. Colourful T-shirts from the kids section (oh to be that slim again!). Tshirts or open shirts over long sleeved tops. Studded cuffs and belt, Etnies or Vans on my feet.

OldClothes · 27/11/2021 20:34

I goggled those skirt trousers - terrible 🤣

TheBeardedVulture · 27/11/2021 20:34

I was 17 and really into goth/ alt/ metal music so I was generally a lot of extremely baggy jeans with wallet chains, sometimes with a slip dress over the top of them. Fishnet tops, studded collars and wrist bands, lots of black eyeliner. I sometimes wore mesh tops with gaffer tape on my boobs. Lots of corset tops. New Rock boots that weighed a tonne.

I still have my Doc Martens from back then.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 27/11/2021 20:36

My favourite pair were metallic silver from tammy I think. Bad, bad fashion times 😂
LBOCS2 · 27/11/2021 20:38

@TheBeardedVulture DH lost his beloved New Rocks in our recent move - he'd had them for over twenty years and still isn't over it.

Yes I had those, tiny and tight with manga all over them. And baggy baggy low rise combats and the gap between them - cold kidneys.

And Acupuncture trainers!
