...what sort of clothes and accessories did you wear?

(Note: my username is coincidental and relates to my job!)

I had an enormous pair of "boyfriend fit", low rise, puddle dragging "utility" jeans, with pockets just EVERYWHERE (down the sides of my knees?!) I miss those jeans. Sigh.

OR skin tight "diesel" jeans (they were super cheap from tk maxx- no idea if they were knock offs) with pointy POINTY toes and metal spike heels.

Nothing in between.

ViceLikeBlip · 27/11/2021 21:24

I desperately wanted buffalos, but had to make do with random platform trainers. Not the same thing at all.

School disco uniform was black hipsters and any sort of shimmery/glittery top. With very expensive, incredibly cheap looking, white patent platform sandals.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/11/2021 21:26

@OldClothes

I have heard handkerchief tops are coming back.
Thankfully I’m too old and fat to wear one. We always had the fear that someone would pull the strings and the whole thing would fall off. Obviously as the back was missing you couldn’t wear a bra.
Ididanamechange · 27/11/2021 21:27

I was 15 and would have just discovered the joy that was Bay Trading. I'd long outgrown tammy girl and Morgan (which was the holy grail of fashion to me) was too expensive. I remember a 70s vibe being in fashion around the turn of the millennium. Flares, bell sleeve swirly pattern tops. Glitter, feather bowers and very layered, feathered long straight hair.

wertheppl · 27/11/2021 21:27

Thongs were a big thing back then. Detailed ones with butterfly's etc that some folk would wear on "show" above the waistband of their jeans or trousers 🙈

I remember halter neck tops being in and backless ones! I remember buying a backless bra from la senza for the backless top I'd bought from miss selfridges. Think it was as expensive £20 as the top and had adhesive things that you had to keep buying at £5 for a 3pk!

Very low cut trousers (bootleg/flared) with detailed cut out waistband that I cldnt wear pants with or u wld see them 🙈

I think I remember have a boob tube dress.

margotnotrobbie · 27/11/2021 21:29

I remember bootcut jeans with trainers and long sleeved T-shirt was my norm. Colourful sunglasses a la Anastasia.

turnthebiglightoff · 27/11/2021 21:34

Slogan / motif tees. Gypsy tops. Black bootleg trousers / jeans / blue straight leg jeans (I looked hot in these Grin) black tops, silver hoops, long dangly silver necklaces. Lots of all different colour pointy stilettos. Flip flops. Birkenstock's before they were £1284637373. Jeans with massive ripped knees. My look was mainly combat trousers, black flip flops / Adidas superstars with some kind of white / black topshop tee or chunky vest. Jeans were usually very very low waist. Gypsy skirts, denim jackets. Clubbing wear was sparkly / see through / very very short skirts / low slung jeans. Mucho boobs.

17 in 2000.

Such a brilliant time.

Marimaur · 27/11/2021 21:44

Criminal damage jeans/wide leg baggy jeans from Camden Market
Vans trainers
Tight tops from Motel
Sheer tops
Tight band tshirts
low rise denim micro mini skirts
Eastpak backpacks
Loads of bracelets

DukeofEarlGrey · 27/11/2021 22:08

I was 19 and just starting uni but v similar memories of:

Massive wide legged jeans that soaked up the rain and caused me to trip over my own feet on more than one occasion

Brown flared fords

Mini t-shirts with things like Harry Potter on

Brown cord 3/4 jacket

Miss Sixty stuff was the dream

I rewatched some old Dawson’s Creek whilst sick recently and realise that I dressed a lot like Joey Potter.

playmelikeasymphony · 27/11/2021 22:17

I was 18 but a bit isolated until I started uni later that year. Not massively fashion conscious.

I lived in two pairs of adidas bottoms, one was bright turquoise. The other was a pair of poppers. And also bootcut jeans. I think my flares phase was a year or two later.

SpookyScarySkeletons · 27/11/2021 22:30

Oh I forgot about the cargo pants with loads of random bits of material hanging off them paired with a white vest top a'la All Saints!

ShatteredDream · 27/11/2021 22:59

I was 14 in the year 2000, the year my sister was born so remember it well. Bootcut jeans and tight tops, pedal pushers - preferably white and crop tops in the summer.

Adidas poppers was the year before for me.

Black trousers that looked like bin bags if they got wet for anything ‘smart’

Bellfor · 27/11/2021 23:04

Lots of khaki and brown
AledsiPad · 27/11/2021 23:07

I was definitely having a “gypsy” skirt phase around then.

Also bootcut jeans, slogan t-shirts. I had a pair of suede boots that I utterly adored.

It was quite tragic, really. And yet, still better than what I see people wearing these days.

Chocachocaholic · 27/11/2021 23:29

I was 18.
Fave shop was usc
Fave brand was miss sixty. Had a super trendy pair of jeans from there at the time that had rings all over them. Cringe now lol
Platform trainers (also miss sixty)
Fcuk t shirts
Kappa bottoms with the poppers (especially for drum and bass nights)
The dreaded trousers with attached skirt
Bootcut jeans
It's funny how some of these things are coming back round again. I'm sure I've seen the trouser with attached skirt somewhere online lately Confused

Chocachocaholic · 27/11/2021 23:30

And long gypsy skirts with wide belts and best tops in the summer

Almostmenopausal · 28/11/2021 00:36

I turned 16 mid way through 2000. I wore Bootcut 'hipster' jeans with a clasp belt or a nice shimmery thin scarf in place of a belt (with one end dangling on one side!) which is a look I always quite liked, especially with black loose trousers that had belt loops.
On top I'd often wear a black top that had 'WAREHOUSE' written across it in diamantés!

I remember going to Canada in 2000. I was thin as a pin back then and have a memory of walking round Vancouver wearing black smart trousers with a tiny black backless top that only had straps on the back but covered the entire front of my torso! Crikey I wouldn't even get one leg in that top now!

SkankingMopoke · 28/11/2021 00:44

I was 16/17 in 2000. I was wearing baggy skater jeans, chunky DC skater trainers, tight band T-shirt, open shirt, and a loosely tied tie. Jewellery was bike chains or chains of chunky ball bearings, plus wallet chain. My hair changed colour by the week, was styled in spikes, and I cut and coloured it myself Grin

The skirt/trousers combo was earlier than 2000. It didn't last long (thankfully!) and was a thing before I discovered punk, so must have been '97 or '98

Crayfishforyou · 28/11/2021 07:46

Low rise jeans
Skater jeans
Lots of tiny butterfly clips in my hair
Tiny tops made from sari fabric
Dresses over trousers, bootcut.
Grey chunky trainers
Cropped trousers

Yes, sparkly scarves as belts, dangled down one side! Turns out I still love 2000s fashion 🤷‍♀️
BigYellowHat · 28/11/2021 08:15

17 in 2000…you’re my kinda gal. Hmm, I remember turtle necks, bell bottom jeans, teeny tiny strappy dresses for nights out, loads of butterfly clips in my hair and a fleece.

SimpsonsXmasBoogie · 28/11/2021 08:19

Extremely wide, baggy jeans. You could have hidden an entire person in each leg. Then I'd wear a far too tight little t-shirt with some sort of obnoxious phrase written on it. Or a band tshirt. 5 or 6 bracelets on each wrist. Long stripey socks. Huge chunky trainers.

I've never seen this written down before. I think it probably sounds as hilarious as it looked!

BigYellowHat · 28/11/2021 08:20

Oh yeah, thongs. Wouldn’t be caught dead in one now. Same with a boob tube. DH still remembers when a man in a pub pulled mine down! 17 year old me didn’t even flinch, I slapped him across the face before pulling it up and flouncing off. Served the entitled prick right for exposing my tits to the whole pub!

toolazytothinkofausername · 28/11/2021 08:20

Kookai was extremely popular.

bizboz · 28/11/2021 08:27

I was 20 but wore a lot of bootcut jeans and shiny tops. Or I wore pencil skirts a lot, usually with another kind of shiny top and knee-high boots (FMBs we used to call them!). I had a couple of pairs of bootcut cords and also t-shirts with logos of things like Hello Kitty. I think there were a lot of zip-up cardigans too. Sometimes did those little buns in my hair.
