Anybody listen to Podcasts?

AnonyMum21 · 09/11/2021 11:55

Please can you suggest some to me please? Interested in all sorts of topics…

And also - (sorry I’m very new to this) - how/what device do you use to listen to them?
I’m doing some long walks and don’t really like audiobooks. Like the idea of being able to listen both at home and while out
Thank you

Just popping back to agree with the PP who said Three Bean Salad.

I wasn't sure initially as it does seem like just another three middle class men wanging on about rubbish, but I absolutely love it. If you're a Mike Wozniak fan it's very much that sort of humour.

The recent chat about Bluebell the cat being sent down in a diving suit to mate with a killer whale had me laughing so hard I had to turn it off to listen to later as I was snorting like a lunatic on the train.

Recycledblonde · 10/11/2021 12:39

I listen to Dr Rangan Chatterjee’s Feel better, Live more podcast. It’s really helped with anxiety etc.

TravellingSpoon · 10/11/2021 12:46

I'm a true crime fan, and listen to Court Junkie and Generation Why on Castbox. I have just finished a series called Doctor Death and Unsolved, which was the Daniel Morgan story by his brother and Peter Jukes.

clarepetal · 10/11/2021 18:07

I have an ap on my android and listen to a lot when I commute.
Years ago I started on Desert Island Discs, will dip into Womans Hour if there is a discussion that interests me. Regularly listen to Luanna as they are very funny but also lovely. Older and Wider with Jenny Eclair is also quite funny and easy. Home Front was a dramatisation on radio 4 set in world war one and I really enjoyed that too.
The world is your oyster and there are so many great ones out there! Adam Buxton is brilliant too he interviews well and is funny.

Following with interest.

Where do you get inspiration from? Recommendations for what's good, sort of 'if you liked that, you'll like this'

Thirtyrock39 · 10/11/2021 19:06

@Rainbowqueeen

Just the gist - similar to you’re wrong about but Australian. Don’t start at the beginning though just choose an episode which sounds interesting. I highly recommend episode 35

One of the hosts also had a pod called My Mum says my memoir is a lie where she reads some of her memoir each episode and then she and her mum talk about it. Her mum is a recovering alcoholic/drug addict and Rosie has a horrible childhood thanks to this. It may trigger some people. I found it really interesting to see how Rosie had so much compassion for her mum and how her mum minimised things.

Just the gist sounds right up my street I've just subscribed and downloaded a few episodes to listen to this week on my walks
OhWhyNot · 10/11/2021 19:11

I am obsessed with podcasts and listen to loads! A constant companion. I listen to be entertained, uplifted, inspired and to laugh.

Some of my favourites:

Fortunately with Fi and Jane
Two female friends talking about all sorts of current affairs and their day to day lives. Such a tonic.

podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/fortunately-with-fi-and-jane/id1220808096

The Rewatchables
A movie podcast where a different (usually older) film is discussed. Fascinating and always makes me laugh.

Graham Norton on Virgin Radio
I love Graham and this is so warm and funny. He usually interviews people from stage and screen. Always entertaining.

All the Right Movies is great, they dissect a different classic film each time and really get into it. It's 3 or 4 northern blokes and they're very funny. Some of the episodes go on nearly as long as the films they're talking about.

GardenersDelight · 10/11/2021 19:53

Sawbones-a marital of misguided medicine

MONSTERSALAD · 10/11/2021 20:21

Timesuck - covers loads of different topics and invariably extremely funny. I subscribe to it so I listen in the Timesuck app most of the time, but on Spotify at work. Hail Nimrod!

Disaster Area - looks at various natural and not so natural disasters. (Spotify)

Supernatural - spooky goings on. (Spotify)

icebearforpresident · 10/11/2021 21:22

^The Rewatchables

The hosts of this also present a TV podcast, The Watch. I’m loving their Succession recaps just now.

In a similar vein, check out The Good, The Bad and The Science (previously called Bad Science). It looks at science in movies and compares it to what would actually happen in real life. The host is great and the experts are always really funny. The episodes about space movies (Armageddon, Gravity) are especially good because usually all the movie science is a load of rubbish!

@banivani

A great thread, I'm noting it for tips!

My own tip that hasn't been mentioned yet is Shedunnit, which is about Golden Age detective stories. It's very professional and well edited, which matters to me, and obv I love the theme. There's another golden age one called In GAD We Trust which is well worth listening to.

Another tip is Gender: A Wider Lens. Two psychoanalysts who talk about current gender ideology and working with teens. Very compassionate and provides a lot of new perspectives.

I also use Overcast, because Apple's own app turned to utter shite in an update, a step down from the previous rating which was "decidedly mediocre". Don't know if I love Overcast, but it works well enough. Always on the hunt for a better player, really.

Have you tried All About Agatha? Two Agatha Christie fans rate and review her books and the films / tv adaptations.

Some great podcasts on BBC sounds already listed but I love Bad People and My Secret Teenage Diary.

On Spotify I listen to The Adam Buxton Podcast. Great chats with other celebrities.

feebal · 10/11/2021 22:08

My current favourite podcast is Encrypted classic horror. I listen on YouTube on my phone. I love audio books and I especially love spooky stories so this is perfect.

bumblingbovine49 · 10/11/2021 22:32

This American Life
The Moth
Where should we begin with Ester Perel brilliant psychology of relationship series

I listen on Google podcasts and on BBC sounds as well as Amazon prime

daretodenim · 10/11/2021 22:59

Crime Analyst by Laura Richards (used to work for Scotland Yard). She's absolutely brilliant - she knows of what she speaks and it makes a big difference.

The Nolan Report on Stonewall on BBC Sounds for one of the best pieces of investigative journalism I've heard for a while. There are interviewees who I agree with and who I don't and he's (they're) fair to both groups plus he gives them time to speak - no cutting them off with aggressive questioning). Plus it's now just resulted in a change of BBC policy, so it's pretty powerful!

Ben shapiro because I DON'T agree with a lot of what he says, but it's good to not get stuck in an sch chamber which can happen with self-selected materials!
