Anybody listen to Podcasts?

Please can you suggest some to me please? Interested in all sorts of topics…

And also - (sorry I’m very new to this) - how/what device do you use to listen to them?
I’m doing some long walks and don’t really like audiobooks. Like the idea of being able to listen both at home and while out
Thank you

@crispinglovershighkick

My favourite cheerful and fun podcasts are the tv series rewatch ones. A friend and fellow Sopranos fan recommended Talking Sopranos which I love, and I also listen to Office Ladies. I don't know why I love them so much, I find them excellent company on long walks, and covid has meant a lot of comfort rewatching of favourite series so they feel relevant in that way. There is a lot of mindless chatter but it makes me feel like a fly on the wall, I find it very relaxing.
I agree with this. Love the West Wing Weekly. It's such easy but interesting listening and really takes my mind off things if I'm finding it hard to switch off from life's stresses.

Parenting Hell - Rob Beckett & Josh Widdicombe

Table Manners - Jessie Ware and her mum Lennie

I listen to the Global News Podcast from the BBC World Service fairly regularly. It’s interesting and has the huge benefit of hardly featuring Boris Johnson and the current UK government at all, so much better for my blood pressure than normal news.

And a bit niche, but ‘All about the Dame’, geeking out about Agatha Christie books. I can easily get put off podcasts by long winded ‘banter’ between smug presenters, but these two I find very endearing.

Not sure if the Gardeners Question Time podcast counts as it’s just the radio programme but that’s my other relaxing one.

Mine might be considered a bit lowbrow but anyway-

Teach me a Lesson (Greg James and Bella Mackie get taught a lesson by a real teacher each week. Funny and educational.

Making the Cut (Davina McCall and boyfriend sleb hairdresser Michael Douglas, recommending and testing things. Trip advisor for your life.

Two Pints with Will and Ralf (Will Mellor and Ralf Little chatting to each other, very rude and very funny.

I get my Podcasts on BBC Sounds/Spotify and Entale. The Ebtale one is great for Making the Cut because as things are mentioned it brings the links up for you to click on.

Sparklingbrook · 09/11/2021 20:48

Apologies for brackets (or lack of) in the above, I may have had a Wine or two. Grin

Nuffaluff · 09/11/2021 20:52

Yes! I love them.
I listen to them on BBC Sounds. They tend to be well presented and well researched and they get to the point without waffling.
I listened to a brilliant one recently: The Battersea Poltergeist. Really good investigation into an intriguing ghost story, presenting a balanced viewpoint of believers and skeptics.
There’s a follow up called The Uncanny.
I’m not listening to Life Changing with Jane Garvey.
I listened to another brilliant one about a white woman who joined the Caliphate, but I can’t remember what it was called.
I listen to them on my phone using wireless headphones. Great for when I’m doing boring cleaning.

Been listening to podcasts for years. I started with "Stuff you should know" and have heard every single one ...there's over 1600 episodes apparently Shock

Other recommendations include:
Ephemeral. Really interesting and beautifully produced. Eclectic subjects.
Hit Parade. Superbly produced and highly researched.
How To Fail. Elizabeth Day treats every interview with compassion and care. She's like a friend in my ear.
Unexplained. Haunting and mysterious, sometimes a little scary. Real-life mysteries and unexplained phenomena.
Happy Place. Nice, easy listen from Fearne Cotton.
Grounded with Louis Theroux.
Bryony Gordon's Mad World.
Deliciously Ella. Great for well being.
Chris Moyles Show.
Used to enjoy Russell Brand until he went to Luminary (subscription service)...his old ones are probably still available. A real mental work out.
We're a home educating family so I also listen to : Home Voices Podcast, Homegrownlearning's podcast, Mended Teacups (very niche Grin)

Love my podcasts, it's like a friend in your ear. Makes chores and housework slightly more tolerable.

Been listening to audiobooks downloaded from the library as an alternative.

History on the Edge, Uncanny, The Life Scientific, In Our Time

Blatantly placemarking.

My Dad Wrote a Porno - probably the funniest thing I've listened to
All the serial series
All Killa No Filla - true crime

I love true crime and listen to Redhanded- it's British but covers global cases and the two girls are very easy to listen to. They also discuss serious and sad issues and topics with respect.

GeorgiaMcGraw · 09/11/2021 21:01

I listen to Disaffected by Joshua Slocum. It's a look at the modern world/culture and the tendencies towards Cluster B and otherwise disordered thinking. Sounds weird, but it's genuinely insightful and very funny. Can download from various places (I use podbean or youtube).

OnFormbySands · 09/11/2021 21:14

I love:

Guardian Football Weekly
Nihal's FiveLive TV Must Watch
Dirty John was amazing
This American Life
Life Changing with Jane Garvey

Used to love Kermode and Mayo but felt it's disappeared up its own backside so just listen when it's the stand ins now.

Crimeismymiddlename · 09/11/2021 21:25

Serial, Tim Dillon, Scam Goddess, that’s messed up.

Buttonsluna · 09/11/2021 21:25

Lots of great recommendations on here so won’t repeat them (except You’re dead to me which is very good and clearly popular).

Two not mentioned (surprising as they’re very popular) have had life changing impacts on me personally...

Feel Better, Live More There is something for everyone to improve health and well-being and I love the long format, I feel like I’ve read a book afterwards!

The Squiggly Career So relevant to modern life work, two U.K. based women talking about loads of career and leadership topics. Very engaging/ entertaining for a careers podcast.

AnonyMum21 · 10/11/2021 06:29

Wow, very happy with all these suggestions…

@AnonyMum21

Stuff you should know

It’s fabulous

LemonDrizzles · 10/11/2021 06:53

You're wrong about - fact checking historical news stories

What went wrong- movie trivia

Under construction- tamar Braxton post divorce with her son about positive affirmations and entrepreneurs

Culture gabfest- Julia Turner (former editor of slate, now editor of la times) and two others going through culture events

Times red box - best of matt Chorley times radio

The latest serial ones are great again

LemonDrizzles · 10/11/2021 06:55

Oh how could I forget, Marc maron! Wtf, long conversations with a variety of people

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/11/2021 06:55

YY to “No Such Thing As A Fish” and “You’re Dead to Me”.

Also “At Least You Didn’t”. Two friends share their most embarrassing moments. They both used to work in breakfast radio, so they have the “talk” to pull it off. It gets me through a half hour run!!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/11/2021 06:56

PS, I listen on my phone +

LemonDrizzles · 10/11/2021 07:11

To answer, I tried a lot of different podcast players but landed on doggcatcher. I still have sticher for s few of theirs.

OverByYer · 10/11/2021 07:16

Ooh like the sound of ‘ something rhymes with purple’
I like ‘ a little talk in slow french’ to feel like I’m fluent

I listen via Spotify on my iPhone with AirPods
