Anybody listen to Podcasts?

Please can you suggest some to me please? Interested in all sorts of topics…

And also - (sorry I’m very new to this) - how/what device do you use to listen to them?
I’m doing some long walks and don’t really like audiobooks. Like the idea of being able to listen both at home and while out
Thank you

Every now and then I look at my stats on my podcast app (pocketcasts) and question my life choices…

Personally I recommend:

  • Beautiful/Anonymous - comedian Chris Gethard take a one hour call from a random stranger. The only rules are it’s anonymous and Chris can’t hang up. Sometimes it’s mindless chitchat, others it’s deeply personal but they’re always great. *The Worst Sitcom Ever Made - the story behind kiwi sitcom ‘Melody Rules’, apparently the worst sitcom ever made. The show is also on YouTube, it’s terrible and I highly recommend you watch it once you’ve listened to the podcast! *Dont ask Tig - comedian Tig Notaro and a special guest give listeners advice on random subjects *Dolly Parton’s America And if you love The (American) Office either Office Ladies, An Oral History of the office or Michael Scott Podcast Company. Or if you really love it, all 3!

Three Bean Salad with Mike Wozniak, Benjamin Partridge and Henry Parker is a big favourite in our house. It's on Spotify.

Unreasonabubble · 09/11/2021 19:10

SORRY! In advance. I have not read all the thread but I am very interested in listening to podcasts whilst I work. I have a monotonous job. What apps can I download to my PC? I have ITunes but can download anything. Thank you.

Sorebum · 09/11/2021 19:33

@SinisterBumFacedCat

I love them!

True crime - Redhanded, Sinisterhood, Murder Most Irish, The Apology Line, To Live and Die in LA, Ballad of Billy Balls, Finding Cleo, Shreds, Bear Brook, Over My Dead Body.

History- Real Dictators, Nobel Blood, Your Dead to Me

Miscellaneous - British Scandal, Your Wrong About, Trashy Divorces, Heavyweight, This is Actually Happening

OMG Trashy Divorces looks BRILLIANT!

I like:-

Joe Rogan
Talking Sopranos
Disaffected - the presenter discuss current culture war nonsense, in his words “through a psychological lens”. I properly lol every single week. He’s so waspish 🐝
Free Speech Nation - Andrew Doyle
Dirty John was brilliant, also The Teachers Pet

Vthirtyone · 09/11/2021 19:46

If you like psychology, How Did We Get Here is brilliant

HikingforScenery · 09/11/2021 19:50

President Obama and Bruce Springsteen’s on Spotify is really good.

So is Michelle Obama’s

You’re dead to me on bbc sounds
Horrible histories / homeschool on bbc sounds

WinterCarlisle · 09/11/2021 20:10

LOVE a podcast.

Favourites at the mo are This Podcast Will Kill You on Spotify. All about diseases - lots on covid obvs. Very very interesting.

I did like Spinning Plates with Sophie Ellis Bextor. Great guests and she’s a really good presenter (must be in the gene Wink). The only thing is she constantly refers to children as “small humans” or “small people” which DROVE ME MAD.

A Thorough Examination with Chris and Xand (the dr twins from Operation Ouch) is really good.

The Life Scientific is great

BBC Sounds had a Killing Eve podcast which I liked a lot.

I like science / medicine mostly. There are so
many out there. It makes housework so much more enjoyable - I hardly realise I’m doing the hoovering or washing as I get so immersed Smile

Moonmelodies · 09/11/2021 20:12

Dear Joan and Jericha is pretty funny, not for kids though.

ThursdayLastWeek · 09/11/2021 20:17

Comedy : Off Menu
R4 Friday night comedy
Elis James and John Robins

Sport : Fighting Talk
: Guardian football weekly

History : The Rest is History
: You’re Dead To Me

When I don’t fancy any of those I go for This American Life, or Dane Baptiste Questions Everything.

These are all pods I can get from the Apple app on my phone and iPad. I use air pods to listen.

When I remember to check the BBC Sounds app there’s usually something fun to listen to on there as well.

Unreasonabubble · 09/11/2021 20:18

Okay, looks like I am going to have to Google what I need to know Grin

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 09/11/2021 20:19

I'm in the middle of listening to It woman 527. Ep527 Evanna lynch. The opposite of butterfly hunting. Apparently she was in Harry Potter, it's about her battle with anorexia but it's easy listening too.

Theforest · 09/11/2021 20:20

If you like tennis, definitely recommend The Tennis Podcast. Excellent

DedalusBloom · 09/11/2021 20:21

You’re dead to me on BBC sounds. I listen to them on my phone when I’m walking to and from work.

Ekofisk · 09/11/2021 20:24

BBC Sounds has some great podcasts - I have enjoyed:

The Battersea Poltergeist
The Dry
Paradise
Death in Ice Valley
Tracks
You’re Dead To Me
Where is George Gibney (this is not for everyone though)
Lovecraft Investigations
Chasing Charlie
Strange Death of Innes Ewert
Great Post Office Trial
My Sister the Serial Killer
The Flatshare
The Hotel

sageandbasil · 09/11/2021 20:26

I love true crime podcasts-
Small town dicks
Case file
Serial season 1 is amazing
Canadian true crime

My fave atm is baby name envy which is about baby names

DedalusBloom · 09/11/2021 20:29

Another fan of You're Wrong About here. It's very US centric but Mike and Sarah have a lovely dynamic.

Others I like:

Gossipmongers if you like ridiculously stupid and smutty humour.

Lore for the Woo contingent. It's beautifully produced.

Today in Focus from The Guardian. Current topics covered intelligently.

Crime Junkie. Mostly US based crimes but the stories pull you in.

Films to be buried with -mostly comedians talking about films.

Athletico Mince - surreal humour with Bob Mortimer

Joan and Jericha - Absolutely filthy agony aunts

99% invisible - design podcast
