Anybody listen to Podcasts?

Please can you suggest some to me please? Interested in all sorts of topics…

And also - (sorry I’m very new to this) - how/what device do you use to listen to them?
I’m doing some long walks and don’t really like audiobooks. Like the idea of being able to listen both at home and while out
Thank you

Desert Island Discs

Horriblehalloween · 10/11/2021 07:37

It makes me sad that I probably won’t get through all of these in my lifetime.

Agadorsparticus · 10/11/2021 07:37

My favourite is Off Menu, the Michelle Keegan episode was hilarious.
I also like:
Johnny Vaughan radio x
Scrubs podcast
Rhod Gilbert froth
Rob Lowe's Literally
Smartless with Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes

But I'm glad I've seen this thread as I've just added Bailey Sarian as I love her murder and makeup.

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about this subject:

I like quite easy going podcasts. I have been enjoying;
The Joe Marker show - where Joe chats to various people about their jobs. Actually funny and there's been some really interesting ones.

Parenting Hell

History hit with Dan Snow

Plus a few rugby ones.

lljkk · 10/11/2021 08:07

Politics, economics, trade, law, some science, ethics -- are my most liked.
I mostly use an iPod (download the podcast so not reliant on wifi/Data).

BBC World Service "The Conversation" or "Outlook" are similar to most of the human-interest suggestions so far.

SleafordSods · 10/11/2021 08:10

I mainly listen to them to cheer myself up on the way to work.

I like Parenting Hell, Life's a Beach and Hip Hop Saved my Life.

I use the Podcasts icon on my iPhone.

Lunaballoon · 10/11/2021 08:12

I listen to podcasts on my phone app when out walking. These are great for random chit chat that I’ve missed since going from office based work to WFH.

Fortunately with Fi and Jane
Grace Dent’s Comfort Eating

The great thing about podcasts is they seem to cover every topic and interest.
Eg recent podcasts I've been enjoying:-
You must remember this- series on the Manson family
Laguna biotch- reviews low brow guilty pleasure American reality shows from the 00s while talking about celebrity gossip
They walk among us- episodes on Stuart Lubbock
Sentimental garbage- particularly the sex and the city episodes
Past Caring- nursing history
Teach me a lesson - Greg janes and Bella mackie having lessons from teachers

My all time faves are you're wrong about (I'm v sad Mike has left though) and the high low which finished last year but I am listening to all the episodes I missed first time around

CantThinkOfaUserNameAgain · 10/11/2021 08:25

I enjoy the Holderness Family Podcast

They are known for their parody videos on YouTube but their podcast is really different.

They have guest speakers in and cover well being, mental health and relationship issues. As well as commentary on family life.

maudmadrigal · 10/11/2021 09:01

I really like Sentimental Garbage. Also listen to quite a bit of parenting/psychology stuff (sort of for work/sort of for own interest).
And Coffee Break French - for keeping up my French (they do lots of other languages too, MIL reckons it has vastly improved her intermediate Italian).

Me too!

I am loving What's Upset You Now - it's like AIBU on steroids Grin

AnnPerkins · 10/11/2021 10:29

I listen to Parenting Hell and Fortunately most weeks via iphone podcasts and BBC Sounds. Also French & Saunders Titting About via audible.

Another excellent one I can recommend is Intrigue - Tunnel 29 on BBC Sounds, which tells the story of a tunnel dug under the Berlin Wall to help people escape to the West. Really fascinating and quite gripping.

Rainbowqueeen · 10/11/2021 10:34

Just the gist - similar to you’re wrong about but Australian. Don’t start at the beginning though just choose an episode which sounds interesting. I highly recommend episode 35

One of the hosts also had a pod called My Mum says my memoir is a lie where she reads some of her memoir each episode and then she and her mum talk about it. Her mum is a recovering alcoholic/drug addict and Rosie has a horrible childhood thanks to this. It may trigger some people. I found it really interesting to see how Rosie had so much compassion for her mum and how her mum minimised things.

banivani · 10/11/2021 10:42

A great thread, I'm noting it for tips!

My own tip that hasn't been mentioned yet is Shedunnit, which is about Golden Age detective stories. It's very professional and well edited, which matters to me, and obv I love the theme. There's another golden age one called In GAD We Trust which is well worth listening to.

Another tip is Gender: A Wider Lens. Two psychoanalysts who talk about current gender ideology and working with teens. Very compassionate and provides a lot of new perspectives.

I also use Overcast, because Apple's own app turned to utter shite in an update, a step down from the previous rating which was "decidedly mediocre". Don't know if I love Overcast, but it works well enough. Always on the hunt for a better player, really.

banivani · 10/11/2021 10:43

Oh, and Words To That Effect! About stories and how they affect people and culture. Really good.

Itsnotdeep · 10/11/2021 10:46

I just love Fortunately!

ffloogalBoom · 10/11/2021 11:01

I listen on my phone and particular faves have been:

Inside Inside No.9 bbc sounds - talks about behind the scenes of each episode of inside No.9

I think it was called "the doorstep killer" about a true crime in Scotland where someone was shot on their doorstep and how they are trying to find who did it years later - bbc sounds

The Real Housewives Archives on Apple podcasts. It's Ellie Nunn and James Evans I think and they do a deep dive in depth analysis of the real housewives series and it's amazing. They analyse people and make comparisons to Greek tragedies and Tennessee Williams and if you do like the real housewives you'll find it fascinating. James does amazing impressions of all of the housewives too.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 10/11/2021 11:45

@vajingleberry - it really is! Grin

Createdjustforthis · 10/11/2021 11:46

I really enjoyed bridgewater, it’s on Apple podcasts.

Mufflette · 10/11/2021 12:12

Some great suggestions!

I'm enjoying the Vogue series on the 90's at the moment.

Vanity Fair inside the hive is a good mix of politics and pop culture.

Desert island dishes is a lovely easy listen with a different food person each week.

Tortoise slow newscast often has interesting subjects.

I'd forgotten about all the desert island discs being on there, definitely going back to those!
