Are you an entitled dickhead

Lol excuse the title but here goes... I work in a super market And I truly love the chat with all our loveky customers but one thing that makes me wanna stab people in the eye with a steak knife is when people literally hand you a big stinking, smelly bag and expect you to pack! Why the hell do people do this? Bring your own bag and pack it yourself. I'm not talking about elderly, disabled or parents with young kids that need a hand, I'm talking people in their 20s / 30s that are incapable of doing this basic task! We even have bags beside the till and many, many times people will ask "can I take a bag" then literally hand it to me to pack it whilst they dick about having a laugh with their mates. My absolute favourite is when full families come in with teenagers and insist on watching you pack, or worse start telling you how they want it packed into specific categories 🤬 whilst discussing the plans for the day 🤬🤬🤬🤬

If you're one of these people! Wake up

@Hobbes8 🤣🤣🤣 so true. I like Aldi but dread the checkout experience. I throw it all in then take it to the packing area, take it all out and do it again.
It should be an Olympic sport - those who succeed to pack their shopping properly at checkout deserve medals.

MazIsWin22 · 06/11/2021 15:59

Wow is that actually a thing? I'd hand them the bag back and say actually you do your own packing

I swear people need to work a year in retail.Maybe they would have a bit of cop on then.

JustPause · 06/11/2021 17:54

I used to work in one of the big UK supermarket convenience stores and we routinely packed customers bags. Yes, occasionally a customer would have a smelly bag but not often.
Most customers appreciated that we packed their bags although I had the odd one who would 'instruct' me how to do it.

MancMum2000 · 06/11/2021 17:57

I grew up somewhere they pack bags, I don’t expect it here in the UK but actually I don’t really understand why you can’t pack the bags. You’re sitting there scanning the items and putting them on the counter, why is scanning then putting directly into a bag much different? It’s hardly a difficult job is it, it should be part of the service for people who are paying your wages by buying the products. Any other shop they pack your bag for you. Perhaps you and the company policy are the entitled ones, expecting people to pay for their goods then pack them while you sit on your bum doing the bare minimum?

Hasn’t got a clue.

The last few times I shopped in Tesco the checkout person asked if I had bags and did I want help - I assumed they’ve been told to ask
I always say no

Im also Assuming they don’t actually want to pack my shopping ( which is fine) they’re just saying what they’ve been told to say

What does annoy me is when they Chuck everything down the conveyor belt.

Im polite and friendly but if I’m spending £60-£70 in their shop I don’t want squashed bread or broken biscuits

Fifthtimelucky · 06/11/2021 18:39

It's interesting to see the differences being revealed in this thread. I usually shop at Tesco and they usually offer to pack my bags. I always have my own bags and always decline because I prefer to do it myself.

gofg · 06/11/2021 19:13

In Australia the checkout assistant packs your shopping bags. It works beautifully and I’ve never seen manky bags being presented.
When I moved to the UK, at my first supermarket shop I stood at the bottom of the till and all my shopping was thrown at me at great pace squashing and smashing into each other. Bad system in the UK all round!

Sounds horrific! They pack in NZ (other than at Pak n Save - the name speaks for itself) and the majority pack very well, better than I could do. During lockdown people had to pack their own, and we all had to stand and wait in line for ages while they did so. The staff pack so much more quickly than the general public. It's all very streamlined and works well - and I've certainly never been in a supermarket where things are thrown at me at great pace!!

zaffa · 06/11/2021 19:37

@disconnected1

I went travelling 20+ years ago and spent some time in South Africa. I remember the looks of horror when I tried to pack my own shopping. Apparently the shops employed people specifically to pack your shopping Confused
I'm from SA and I really struggled when I first moved here and I was expected to ps k my own bags, but only because I had never experienced that before. Blush although in SA supermarkets the person who packs bags is separate to the person who runs the checkout. Now, I couldn't imagine expecting someone else to pack my bags, it's hard to get used to it when I go home. I had no idea it was even a thing unless you were unable to do it yourself or needed assistance
ColinTheKoala · 06/11/2021 19:39

@SnowWhitesSM

YABU - I specifically go to sainsburys as they pack your bags for you. I like having my bag packed for me, thats why I go there and not tescos.
? Since when has Sainsburys packed bags for you? Sometimes the scouts are there to raise money but the staff don't do it.
zaffa · 06/11/2021 19:45

@disconnected1 by really struggled, I mean that I literally didn't understand why my goods were not being packed, not that I didn't understand how to do it. It led to a very embarrassing conversation but I learnt quickly!
Also really struggled with the whole business of ordering yourself at the bar and no table service for drinks and food in a lot of pubs. But again, sharp learning curve!

thegcatsmother · 06/11/2021 19:59

A couple of the Belgian supermarkets packed for you. Miss that here. It worked very well.

thelegohooverer · 06/11/2021 20:46

It’s a supervalu isnt it? One of the ones that used to be a SuperQuinn, I bet.

SmellyLikeABlew · 06/11/2021 21:47

So much so, I only read the title and couldn't be bothered to read your OP.Grin

Nah, you'd still get the ones who would be saying, "when I worked in retail, we had to..." Some people are just gits regardless.

LimitIsUp · 06/11/2021 23:05

I am just bemused - what do people do with their bags to get them so stinky? None of my bags smell - I am not particularly a neat freak

Mrstamborineman · 07/11/2021 00:43

Yabu and rude. You pick up items to scan, what’s the big shock of helping customers . That, well surprise surprise pay your wages.
Jesus you’ll soon moan about job loss when it’s all self check out. Honestly this past year I have noticed a rise in cashiers thinking they have skills pushing bar codes over a light.

When I used to work in supermarkets, the worst bags were ones where something had clearly been spilled in it, and the bag not washed. So a fabric bag that has had milk/cream leak on it, or a bag where some meat has leaked for example could really smell horrible.

Not only does my local supermarket pack your bags but they will walk out and load if in your car if you want. When its raining hard Ive seen them walk people out under those huge umbrellas and load up their car then take the wagon back. I got a hell of a shock first time I shopped in a UK supermarket Grin
They hire kids as baggers. Its most kids first job in the towns they operate in, they will take them at 14 and are very good employers by all accounts. My boys never worked there as they refused to cut their hair and the boys have to be clean cut with short hair and wear a shirt and tie. No visible tattoos or piercings either. Didnt work for any of my kids as they were all pierced to buggery by the time they were 14
