Are you an entitled dickhead

Lol excuse the title but here goes... I work in a super market And I truly love the chat with all our loveky customers but one thing that makes me wanna stab people in the eye with a steak knife is when people literally hand you a big stinking, smelly bag and expect you to pack! Why the hell do people do this? Bring your own bag and pack it yourself. I'm not talking about elderly, disabled or parents with young kids that need a hand, I'm talking people in their 20s / 30s that are incapable of doing this basic task! We even have bags beside the till and many, many times people will ask "can I take a bag" then literally hand it to me to pack it whilst they dick about having a laugh with their mates. My absolute favourite is when full families come in with teenagers and insist on watching you pack, or worse start telling you how they want it packed into specific categories 🤬 whilst discussing the plans for the day 🤬🤬🤬🤬

If you're one of these people! Wake up

This thread is so interesting! Are the checkouts in the uk like big proper belts and everything? You can't be doing your whole shop on a tiny self serve? I'm in Oz so we get things packed and scanned for us.

nextdoorslawnmower · 06/11/2021 02:08

Also our bags are brown paper bags, so not stinky Smile

And they're always happy to pack meat separately, very common to do so. Thinking about it the people working on the tills are generally very friendly and chatty.

StrawberryJamSandwiches · 06/11/2021 02:38

I used to work on the customer services line for a major supermarket.... Some of the entitled people who would call and make 'complaints' about ridiculous things was staggering. One woman called to complain that the checkout person never packed her bags.... I said this isn't an expectation of the staff but did she ask for assistance? Nope, she never asked for any help but felt she should be "compensated" that she had to pack her own bags Hmm Erm. I'll pass your comments on, but to clarify, the staff are not simply expected to start packing customers shopping...

ClaryFairchild · 06/11/2021 02:39

I laughed so hard when my Australian DSis visited me in the UK and blithely handed over the bags to the checkout operator. The look of utter confusion on the checkout operator's face was so funny I laughed and said "you pack your own groceries in the UK" to my sister and then to the checkout operator "she's from Australia and shopping is packed for you automatically there". If anything the checkout operator looked even MORE shocked, the thought of packing bags clearly was way too much for her...

halloweenie13 · 06/11/2021 02:50

I'm in my 20's and often at shops people try to pack for me I find it awkward and would prefer to pack myself, I have autism so I don't know if people can often tell but it makes me feel inadequate, it's why I often stick to self serve kiosks

TreeSmuggler · 06/11/2021 03:12

Oh how interesting, I'm in Australia and as pp said there is no option to pack yourself, except at the self checkout or at Aldi. I'd rather do it myself though, it's one reason I always use the self checkout even if I have a $200+ shop.

So OP if you were thinking of a move down under, don't do it!

teezletangler · 06/11/2021 03:17

Some of those people sound annoying but I am so slow at packing I really need someone to help me with it, or I just get anxious and/or hold up any queue.

I think it's overall a slightly slower but much less stressful system to have the cashier do the packing. Pretty standard here in Canada. But one thing here- they stand the whole time they're at the till. No seats here!

Namechangedox · 06/11/2021 03:21

Publix in the USA pack your shopping for you and even deliver it to your car!! I'd just had an operation and I really needed some help packing at the local coop she just threw the bags at me my poor 8 year old DD had to pack and lift a lot of it to help me out.

Somuddled · 06/11/2021 03:42

Your reaction suggests that it isn't in your job description, so why do you do it? Just say 'sorry we don't offer a packing service'.

Bluergh at having to touch other peoples dirty bags.

AmorFati · 06/11/2021 04:42

Wow, yes, this is fascinating to a New Zealander. Only at the very budget supermarket chain (Pak n Save) here do you have to pack your own bags, and there everything is carefully placed in another trolley by the checkout operator, there are benches for packing after the tills, or people pack at their cars.

I'd be hopeless if I was expected to pack my groceries as they came down the line, especially with the big shops I used to do once a fortnight! I'd never quite fit the whole trolley load on the belt!

I'd never realised we were so spoiled/the UK had it do hard!

Bogeyes · 06/11/2021 05:11

Put eggs at the bottom under tins of beans

anne2650 · 06/11/2021 05:35

Would never expect a cashier to pack for me.

In Walmart in the US they have a spinner with carrier bags on and two items will be placed in each bag. So much unnecessary waste.

Cuntness · 06/11/2021 05:49

I actually prefer to pack my own bag because I can be quite anal about it.

I went through the Scan As You Go system recently. I was heavily pregnant with PGP so I was just shoving the items in wherever to get out ASAP when I had to have a full check. The woman doing it packed it all away again really nicely for me and I really appreciated it.

isthismylifenow · 06/11/2021 06:03

Another entitled one here. I can't remember when I last packed my shopping into a bag. Its all gets packed for me and loaded back into the trolley and off I go to the car.

We don't think twice about it. It's just how it's done here.

onedaytwodayyay · 06/11/2021 06:08

Thanks all for your replies...seems like most of you are in agreement with me and pack your own bags. I guess after a 7 hr shift of standing on my feet all day with a 15 min break it just gets tiring. Don't get me wrong I do love my job and I'm extremely grateful that I'm able to work and have the pleasure of talking to some really lovely people. Sometimes it's just nice when the same people try and make your job a bit easier

I am so shocked by this! People do act appallingly sometimes. I wouldn’t ever even think to ask this of someone - it’s so rude.

I also deal with the public and I frequently have them turning up half an hour/40 minutes late for their appointments and still demanding to be seen as if I have absolutely nothing else to do on my day. The audacity does make me laugh!

Oh dear me! That is shocking. I do believe people just don't understand how inconsiderate the public can be.

@eustonwehaveaproblem

I'm laughing at the 'big, stinking, smelly bag' part of your post, op.

You've never worked in social care or healthcare, have you?

You sound extremely sensitive.

But those are completely different jobs, I don’t see the relevance. You can think that a fabric bag that has clearly had milk leak in it a few weeks ago is smelly whether you’ve worked in healthcare or not. A regular where I worked had one of those cool bags that clip shut at the top that she wanted her meat packed in. That’s fine, except over the months she’d had this bag, there’d clearly been leaks and it had never been cleaned. So when you unclipped it to open it, you’d get the delightful smell of off meat. People who haven’t worked in healthcare are allowed to find off meat stinky. OP wasn’t claiming to have the worst job in the world.
Littlemisspissypants · 06/11/2021 06:52

I feel your frustration. I don't work in a supermarket but the ones I shop in you're supposed to pack your own shopping on a bench, away from the till, people who insist on packing at the till infuriate me. Why are you above the rules? I have never had bags packed for me. It would feel weird.

fournonblondes · 06/11/2021 06:56

I have my shopping delivered but in the past Wholefoods staff packed my shopping at the till. It is nice because they are trained or experienced to do it so that it fits more in their lovely paper bags.

Hobbitch · 06/11/2021 06:58

Just having a giggle remembering the Alan Partidge episode where he 'works' in a supermarket. The way he says 'Do you need any help packing?' is hilarious.

fournonblondes · 06/11/2021 07:01

You have not idea. How can you possible expect customer services in the U.K. it is sooo rude 🤣🤣🤣

nellly · 06/11/2021 07:12

What?! I had no idea that this was even a thing, the only person I've seen ask for help packing was a little elderly lady with a little trolley who has trouble bending, totally understandable!

I have only let people pack when they're scouts/guides and I've given them money for fundraising.
I'm
Honeslty gobsmacked that people do this!

Thinkbiglittleone · 06/11/2021 07:13

I prefer to pack myself in my big shop as I like it packed a certain way.

Although I have stopped going to our local well know convenience shop, as the cashier is just mad, there is only a tiny little place for her to put your shopping once scanned, she whizzes it all through and just throws it all on top of each other when you clearly have not even got your bag open to keep up, she's a nightmare and all the locals do ask her to pack for them as she has the worst customer service skills ever and no common sense.

But no, a smelly old bag is never good for anyone !
