Are you an entitled dickhead

Lol excuse the title but here goes... I work in a super market And I truly love the chat with all our loveky customers but one thing that makes me wanna stab people in the eye with a steak knife is when people literally hand you a big stinking, smelly bag and expect you to pack! Why the hell do people do this? Bring your own bag and pack it yourself. I'm not talking about elderly, disabled or parents with young kids that need a hand, I'm talking people in their 20s / 30s that are incapable of doing this basic task! We even have bags beside the till and many, many times people will ask "can I take a bag" then literally hand it to me to pack it whilst they dick about having a laugh with their mates. My absolute favourite is when full families come in with teenagers and insist on watching you pack, or worse start telling you how they want it packed into specific categories 🤬 whilst discussing the plans for the day 🤬🤬🤬🤬

If you're one of these people! Wake up

@disconnected1

I went travelling 20+ years ago and spent some time in South Africa. I remember the looks of horror when I tried to pack my own shopping. Apparently the shops employed people specifically to pack your shopping Confused
When I was living in NZ all the major supermarkets use to have staff at the end of the checkout specifically to pack bags. I am not sure if they still do this. The last time I was there I mainly shopped at PaK n Save which is generally a cheaper no frills supermarket and you pack your own bags (hence the name).
PizzaCrust · 05/11/2021 22:46

@TwinklyBranch

Sorry, but is that not part of your job to pack for people? Confused That'd be like me moaning that not only do I have to read the emails I get, I also need to reply. Anyway, I'm not an entitled dickhead because I use the self service tills and do my own packing.
Your comparison is all wrong.

A more apt comparison would be like someone setting down a tray full of dirty cups and expecting you to wash them and make tea for everyone. Is it a nice thing to do for others in your office? Yes. And if someone obviously couldn’t wash them for whatever valid reason, you’d do it. But for it to be expected if you while the person goes and sits on their hole and waits for their coffee to be handed to them?

I think you’d get annoyed, too.

@wolfstarling

Argh I have accepted the offer loads of time is that bad? Blush

Usually it's when I can't fit everything on the belt or the shop assistant is going too fast and I haven't emptied my trolley and there is a mountain on the other side.

Honestly it's the entitled customers that expect it, not the nice ones like you that just need a little bit of help after packing your own bags xxx you're not guilty xx

@Triffid1

I have to admit, I might be totally missing the point here but.... CASHIERS WILL PACK FOR YOU?!

I can honestly say I have never seen that. In fact, while I am perfectly happy to pack my own stuff and it definitely makes things much faster, I have had the occasional situation where I get a bit annoyed because I can't pack because I'm still unloading my trolley and if the cashier did just a tiny bit of packing for me, I could finish unloading and come take over.

But I'm still struggling with the concept that you can actually do that - hand the cashier your bag and get them to do it. I wouldn't want to do it but I'm now going to be watching more carefully to see who all these entitled feckers are.

Oh I would always have offered to pack for someone who was still unloading their shopping. Anyone who, for whatever reason, wasn’t able to pack what I’d scanned through (either due to disability, a screaming toddler, running back to grab one thing they forgot) I’d always pack for. It was the people who just stood there, watching, and perfectly able to pack themselves that were irritating. One memorable customer used to drum her fingernails on the till while glaring.

I'm in Ireland and assumed this was UK! I assume you work in M&S. It's the only shop I could conceive of this carry on.
I silently explode when people don't pack briskly!

ALittleBitWorrriedNow · 05/11/2021 22:49

Shocked that people actually do this. I know they do sometimes offer in some supermarkets (Waitrose?) but I assume that’s only under special circumstances, eg. for the elderly, those with small children etc. I always say no when offered, makes me feel really awkward having someone else doing all the hard work .

I’m assuming the store is a CoOp/Spar type place due to the lack of space, etc.

yup that was me + 2 or 3 kids. lifesaver! oh cringe I used to have to empty the mud out of the bags sometimes. it is is soooo nice when someone helps but you should genuinely need the help imo
Verfremdungseffekt · 05/11/2021 22:52

@onedaytwodayyay

I live in Ireland, maybe we are more entitled over here! I always wish I was brave enough to confront them with some smart arsey answer but unfortunately my mortgage won't pay itself when I'm Sacked 🤭
So do I, and I shop regularly in Tesco, Dunnes’, M and S, and a few different SuperValus, and I think the only time anyone has asked or expected to pack my groceries was volunteer packers doing it for charity.

I’ll be the first to admit we have a selection of ancient (though relatively frequently-washed) cotton bags, but we don’t expect anyone else to handle them!

Notsandwiches · 05/11/2021 22:52

Dont worry - it won't be for long as you will be out of a job soon as we are all encouraged to scan and pack for ourselves.

Lucythewonderdog · 05/11/2021 22:53

I work in a supermarket and haven't offered to pack bags since the start of the pandemic.

me4real · 05/11/2021 22:54

But most customers are wankers who love the power trip they think they have.

@BorderlineHappy Sad Sad Sad I try to be friendly and find most staff are ok. Maybe I'm slightly more empathetic because I worked in Tesco briefly, too. And it'd be really mean to make life worse for someone doing that job.

I got someone saying I hadn't scanned their reduced items properly once but that's fair enough.

Bold hair colours (including too red) were not allowed, which I consider reasonable, though telling me off for red coming out redder than I intended is maybe a bit stringent. Now I see places hiring people in customer facing roles with tattoos on their faces.

@FOJN

Phew, I opened the thread wth trepidation wondering if I was about to find out I'm an entitled dickhead, I'm not.Grin

It really irritates me when I see people do it so I have some sympathy for you, it's just rude.

I did exactly the same. Am I an entitled dick head? 😂

OP I've never done this or seen anyone else doing it but I'm annoyed on your behalf! It's as if they're above packing their own bags?!

I'm sure the entitled ones amongst us will still expect help, other customers will be getting roped in! I'll enjoy the peace 😃

YABU - I specifically go to sainsburys as they pack your bags for you. I like having my bag packed for me, thats why I go there and not tescos.
They don't pack in any of the sainsburys I've been in. Maybe if you thrust your smelly bag at them they will.
BrunoJenkins · 05/11/2021 23:11

My shop isn't a big supermarket, more of a smallish convenience store

This is probably the issue. I always pack for myself in supermarkets, but in small shops the person at the full usually does the packing because there just isn't room to put anything anywhere else (I don't ask, they just do it). So my guess is that your customers are just following that pattern and assuming you'll pack.

TasteTheMeatNotTheHeat · 05/11/2021 23:11

This is one thing I really don't miss about England.

I live in Australia now and it is considered a basic part of customer service to pack the customer's bag for them. I don't think I've ever encountered a shop here that doesn't do it. They don't make an on the spot assessment about your physical capabilities and whether or not they believe you look "worthy" of needing help packing your bag, they just do it for everyone.

BrunoJenkins · 05/11/2021 23:11

*till

MrsMagnum · 05/11/2021 23:14

I would be embarrassed to ask someone to pack my bag when I am perfectly capable of doing it myself. I also am strict about not mixing raw and cooked foods which doesn't seem to be an issue with others. The only time I would have considered it was in my local Sainsburys where a miserable old guy used to gleefully speed scan a big shop and throw things down the till area at you so you had no chance of keeping up then get really irritated when the area was full of things that stopped him continuing. He never offered to help though. It was stupidly stressful in the moment.

Kernowfornia · 05/11/2021 23:20

Another reason I can’t work in retail < passes manky bag back and enquires if their wee fucking arms are broken >

InTheNightWeWillWish · 05/11/2021 23:21

The only time we had bags packed for basically everyone was at Christmas, and charity groups would do it with a collection tin, a person per till.

I don’t even like my bags being packed when it’s for charity. One, I never carry change anyway and feel awful for saying no. Two, I have a system and usually the teenager doing the packing will put two pints of milk on top the pack of iced buns (or other soft treat) I’ve bought.

That'd be like me moaning that not only do I have to read the emails I get, I also need to reply.

But I don’t think that’s actually that unusual. I definitely have some external contacts and when their name pops up in my inbox I get this feeling of dread. They send lots of passive aggressive emails and the odd backhanded compliments. Every response also has to be carefully constructed because things are often taken out of context. I tend to get these emails when I have a million other things on and they take a massive chunk of the day because the responses have to be so carefully considered. Even if I don’t outwardly complain, I’m still thinking ‘oh fuck my life’. I also have a colleague that I hate replying to their emails. Usually because I’ve already explained the email several times in person and they are just wasting my time but they’ve CC’d every senior manager in so I have to reply. Doesn’t mean I’m not going to come home and bitch about them and their twattish ways.

shinynewapple21 · 05/11/2021 23:24

So Pre-Covid in all our local supermarkets (Sainsbury/Tesco/Asda - not Aldi) the checkout staff would always start my packing for me - probably because I had so much stuff it would not have been possible to get everything on the conveyor at the same time. Once I'd finished loading I would take over the packing .

I think there's been a difference since Covid as I have been told staff aren't allowed to pack into my bags any longer . Actually this has normally been in the smaller co-op stores as mostly I've been getting deliveries for larger shops .

Tavelo · 05/11/2021 23:27

You should work for aldi where you can hurl their items through at a speed at breaks the sound barrier

eustonwehaveaproblem · 05/11/2021 23:31

I'm laughing at the 'big, stinking, smelly bag' part of your post, op.

You've never worked in social care or healthcare, have you?

You sound extremely sensitive.

Airfriedshite · 05/11/2021 23:43

No I am not an entitled dickhead but I think you are. You buy something in a shop they put it in a bag wth is wrong with that if you don't like it get a different job. If the checkout staff didnt assist me with packing it would hold up the queue as I am still unpacking trolley and no room left at packing end (yes I buy alot) they always help with good grace unless it's aldi and I dont go there very often. If that's all you have to get wound up about you are very lucky
