Are you an entitled dickhead

Lol excuse the title but here goes... I work in a super market And I truly love the chat with all our loveky customers but one thing that makes me wanna stab people in the eye with a steak knife is when people literally hand you a big stinking, smelly bag and expect you to pack! Why the hell do people do this? Bring your own bag and pack it yourself. I'm not talking about elderly, disabled or parents with young kids that need a hand, I'm talking people in their 20s / 30s that are incapable of doing this basic task! We even have bags beside the till and many, many times people will ask "can I take a bag" then literally hand it to me to pack it whilst they dick about having a laugh with their mates. My absolute favourite is when full families come in with teenagers and insist on watching you pack, or worse start telling you how they want it packed into specific categories 🤬 whilst discussing the plans for the day 🤬🤬🤬🤬

If you're one of these people! Wake up

But I hate check out staff packing my bags. I don’t even bother taking my bags in most of the time, I load the belt by the way I want to load my trolley so I can pack my own bags easily when I get to my car.

On another note, i hate rude checkout staff who deliberately don’t push the groceries far enough for my short arse to reach, even if I didn’t suffer from chronic pain and can barely bend over it’s still rude. It was fine before covid but now there are screens preventing us getting too close.

Also like the guy yesterday who wanted to finish his chat about the horrible noise his jaw made when he was moving it around instead of starting to scan my shopping (this was Aldi too) he also talked the entire time to some random person trying to do their shopping, about his online alter egos over a good 10 customers waiting to be severed ( I know very odd in Aldi). He then decided to unscrew and smell the scented candles I bought and comment on them. The only time he made eye contact was to say good bye and even then it was a look down at you look.

Fuckfuckfucked · 05/11/2021 23:44

You work in a dunnes im guessing Grin also they let you do a supermarket sweep to get your 10 euro of 50 voucher... So say your shopping comes to 190 they let you go back and find tbings that cost 10 euros so you get to use that voucher. Doesn't matter if people are waiting!!!

BorderlineHappy · 05/11/2021 23:45

@eustonwehaveaproblem 2 completely different jobs there.
In a role of caring for patients of course you expect that .
Not for when you work for Spar

wobblywinelover · 05/11/2021 23:48

@eustonwehaveaproblem

I'm laughing at the 'big, stinking, smelly bag' part of your post, op.

You've never worked in social care or healthcare, have you?

You sound extremely sensitive.

oh don't be silly. She's entitled to have a moan if she wants to. Some people are pretty minging. What does it matter where she has worked before her experience is annoying to her. You don't even know her - you sound sensitive. Get off your high mumsnetty horse
wobblywinelover · 05/11/2021 23:49

OP do you work at the co op? I can't blame you for feeling like you do. Some people treat cashiers like they are a bit of shit off their shoe, like some sort of slave. The entitlement and snobbery is rife in this country.

gemloving · 05/11/2021 23:50

Wtf that's a thing? I always pack my own bags, rightly so!!

Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 05/11/2021 23:51

I don't think this makes people entitled bastards really. In some shops and in most countries they pack your shopping for you automatically. Where do you work?

SeaToSki · 05/11/2021 23:54

Im in the US and they always pack for you at the supermarket, in fact they get quite annoyed if you try and pack for yourself (which i mostly prefer to do so i can put the raw meat separately and the freezer and fridge stuff together etc). At my local supermarket the nice checkout ladies said that one of the small upsides of the pandemic was that they banned customers from bringing in their own bags, so they didnt have to handle people’s stinky grimy bags.

Crikeycroc · 05/11/2021 23:59

This was my first ever job, except where I live (not UK) you have to automatically pack for everyone. Not a problem, but every shift there would be someone who threw everything on the conveyer belt with absolutely no consideration and then raised their voice at you because you hadn’t been able to pack their groceries in precisely the right categories.
And to the PP who accused the OP of being sensitive, an unwashed shopping bag that has had dairy or meat leak in it STINKS by the following week. And yes, I do work in healthcare. Where I have access to PPE and if something stinks I usually just bin it or wash it.

EBearhug · 06/11/2021 00:07

I chuck my fabric bags in the wash every now and then. But I'm the only one who handles them. I don't remember anyone offering to pack them, except charity groups st Christmas.

DemocracyofHypocrisy · 06/11/2021 00:08

I prefer to pack my own bags but I am so shit at it. I can’t estimate how many bags I need, can’t make the most of the space and God help me when I need to bag a mixture of boxed items and bottles (especially with Sainsbury’s pedal bin size carrier bags). I have adopted Aldi’s way in other stores now, and just dump everything back in the trolley and pack somewhere at the side/at the car.

That way I don’t feel the pressure of the queue/the awkwardness when the cashier says ‘have a good day, bye!’ and I’m still figuring out how to position 2 pizzas and a box of jacket potatoes in one bag.

BoredZelda · 06/11/2021 00:13

On the other hand, when you ask me if I want a hand with packing, and I say no, don’t pack for me.

I might have, on occasion in the past, asked for help with packing if shopping by myself or with my daughter who can’t help with packing, and I have a really big shop on the belt.

But with shop and scan or self scan, I haven’t used a checkout in years. It’s far less stressful to do it all myself and apparently I’m swerving being judged if the bags I take are less than pristine.

Hellotoallmyfans · 06/11/2021 00:19

I'm not an entitled dickhead with bag packing, no (I'm sure I probably am in other aspects of life though). If I'm doing a big shop (more than two bags) I always pack it myself as I have a system and get antsy if it isn't packed correctly. I also like to go to the same checkout lady as she is lovely and scans things quickly - there is one guy who I try to actively avoid as he's too slow and has big hairy hands with long fingernails - I don't like him handling my fruit n veg!

As for piss-smelling bags - eurgh! How do they even come to smell of wee?

Wheelz46 · 06/11/2021 00:26

I didn't realise this was a thing, is it in your contract, if a customer asks, do you have to oblige? I would definitely be putting their milk on top of their bread. 😆

I have a certain way of packing and would hate it to be interfered with.

You don't see it as much now but I used to dread when the cubs or scouts used to stand at the end of tills packing to raise money. Always, thought it was lovely to raise the money, more than happy to donate just keep your hands off my packing system. 😅

gofg · 06/11/2021 00:37

I can't believe people still get their bags packed for them!

I don't live in the UK, and it's quite usual for people to get their bags packed for them at some supermarkets here. They don't ask, they just do it - one of my local supermarkets often has staff just doing the packing!

canihaveacoffeeplease · 06/11/2021 00:37

Gah, here in Australia they always pack for you (except at Aldi, they still love chucking everything at you there), I've really got used to it. Especially when holding a baby who will cry if put down in the trolley, it's a lifesaver. One of the checkout ladies at my local Coles is shit hot at packing, she is so organised and just packs beautifully, I love her checkout! It's going to be a culture shock next time we go back to the uk and to Tescos and have to pack our own bags ha ha!

Onthedunes · 06/11/2021 00:41

It's obviously not Aldi you work for then.

I swear conveyor, till, packing agility will be an Olympic sport one day.

Grin
RavingAnnie · 06/11/2021 00:46

I pack my own bags. But (smelly disgusting bags aside) I don't see anything wrong with a customer accepting a service that's been offered. It makes their shopping experience more pleasant which is why it's offered in some stores. It's customer service, which is part of your job when you work in a customer facing role.

Beebababadabo · 06/11/2021 00:54

Wow I've never seen anyone expect their bag to be packed! I have been asked do you want help with packing? I assumed it might be because some people might need help if they are old or disabled, so they don't discriminate they have to ask everyone. Since covid it's been dropped as far as I can remember.

Alieninmybody · 06/11/2021 00:54

Do you work in centra/gala?
I would just scan their items really slowly and leave them to pack themselves.
I work in a large pharmacy, we automatically pack the paper bags we give out. If someone chooses to use their own bag I pass the items along to them as I've scanned them.

lonelyatchristmas · 06/11/2021 00:56

I tell them I can't pack there own bag for them because if COVID. Not a hope I'm putting my hand anywhere near there dirty manky bags.. even if they buy a bag I won't pack it unless they are elderly then of course I'll pack it but I work near a big college so have a load of Self entitled twats coming in and there not a hope in the world I'm packing there bag for them..

lonelyatchristmas · 06/11/2021 00:59

Had a customer once put her new handbag in the counter to show
Me it as there was
Cats on it and when she walked away she left a big slimy slug on the counter..

MrsFezziwig · 06/11/2021 01:10

You’d love me OP. I would rather have hot needles poked in my eyes than let the cashier pack for me, I have a system which I like to follow and it doesn’t involve cashiers throwing items randomly into my very clean bags the way they throw them down the belt. Unfortunately, for this reason I like to use the self checkout so likely will be the cause of your eventual phasing out.

But most customers are wankers who love the power trip they think they have.

I’m not sure that a customer facing role is for you.

Doing the twice-weekly shop was the one thing that kept my DF feeling human as he succumbed to dementia. The supermarket manager looked after him well. Having people greet him and make sure the detergent was packed separately from the broccoli and that both packed bags were of roughly equal weight really made his day. When he died I went to the supermarket to thank the staff (via the manager) for their kindness.

To the staff of Coles in Bondi Junction, Sydney -- thanks again!
