Are you an entitled dickhead

Lol excuse the title but here goes... I work in a super market And I truly love the chat with all our loveky customers but one thing that makes me wanna stab people in the eye with a steak knife is when people literally hand you a big stinking, smelly bag and expect you to pack! Why the hell do people do this? Bring your own bag and pack it yourself. I'm not talking about elderly, disabled or parents with young kids that need a hand, I'm talking people in their 20s / 30s that are incapable of doing this basic task! We even have bags beside the till and many, many times people will ask "can I take a bag" then literally hand it to me to pack it whilst they dick about having a laugh with their mates. My absolute favourite is when full families come in with teenagers and insist on watching you pack, or worse start telling you how they want it packed into specific categories 🤬 whilst discussing the plans for the day 🤬🤬🤬🤬

If you're one of these people! Wake up

@SnowWhitesSM

YABU - I specifically go to sainsburys as they pack your bags for you. I like having my bag packed for me, thats why I go there and not tescos.
I am guessing op doesn't work somewhere, where the checkout staff are expected to pack your bag.

Also is your bag smelly? I can't quite work out why you would think op is unreasonable otherwise.

If so, replace the bag

I don’t think they do this in my local Sainsbury’s. Do they offer?
SickAndTiredAgain · 05/11/2021 21:59

I don’t know why I used the example of my local Sainsbury’s in my comment above when I used to work on the checkouts at a Sainsbury’s.
We were never told to pack, unless the customer requested it.

Cuck00soup · 05/11/2021 22:01

@BewareTheBeardedDragon

Phew - not me, I hate having help with packing - I have my system and don't want it interfered with 😂

Does this happen a lot OP? I'm quite gobsmacked.

Me too! I'll pack my own things my way.

I prefer not to have my shopping thrown at me though. And I'm no slow coach.

Rainbowunicorn76 · 05/11/2021 22:02

Well I'm not an entitled dickhead because I never hand people a bag or ask them to pack for me.....
But
If they automatically pack my bag or offer to do it, I quite like it Blush
Is that wrong? May need a supermarket rethink!!

BitterTits · 05/11/2021 22:02

This reminds me of my stint in Kwik Save as a 15 year old. Some cantankerous old bastard a pop at me because I was 'throwing' their shopping into the bags (trying to be quick enough to avoid a bollocking from my vile power-tripping supervisor).

My shop isn't a big supermarket, more of a smallish convenience store but it's a big name. We aren't really geared up for the same big shops that tesco/ Sainsbury's are that's what makes it really frustrating when people hold up the queue whilst standing there watching you struggle

OP posts:
Peppapigforlife · 05/11/2021 22:03

I used to work at Sainsbury's and it was policy that we had to ask all the customers if they wanted any help packing their bags. EVERY single customer. Even if they were 25 and only had two things.

İ would try and telepathically state in their eyes and say 'just say no', but they'd generally be taken by surprise and say 'oh alright then' and watch me do the whole thing, grinning. Some of them would laugh at the thought of it.
Sometimes I didn't mind if it was quiet and I was bored but seeing the queue getting bigger and angrier whilst I slowly packed and swiped at the same time, just made it so dramatic!

onedaytwodayyay · 05/11/2021 22:05

@bigred22

I can't believe people still get their bags packed for them! (Aldi shopper here though, I'm lucky if I can get my bags open in time to throw my own stuff in!)

Oh yes, there's people walking about there that expect it and actually ask "are you not going to pack for me? In a shocked, bewildered tone when they see that I've passed them the first 15 items that are now stranded at the other end lol

No there is a difference when people offer, fear not! Many times if it's not busy I too will offer but when it's busy or again when there are families in together I think it's common courtesy to pack your own bag to help out. X

I don't think i have ever seen someone get their bags packed for them in a supermarket?!?!

disconnected1 · 05/11/2021 22:08

I went travelling 20+ years ago and spent some time in South Africa. I remember the looks of horror when I tried to pack my own shopping. Apparently the shops employed people specifically to pack your shopping Confused

Multiple times per hour ! It's a talking point with the staff lol

Were sainsbury making their staff pack customers bags during last year? Earlier this year? Seems an odd thing to do, during a pandemic, unless people genuinely need help.

If they didn't, When did they introduce it again?

I am also sure, that when supermarkets tell staff to ask if people need help, it was incase people had a problem that wasn't visible, that made packing difficult and slow.

Not really designed for able bodied completely healthy people to have their shopping packed as a perk.

Also would bet they are expected to ask. Nor exepectes to pack everyone single persons shopping. I am guessing the expectation is tagt if you can pack it yourself, you would.

Hobbes8 · 05/11/2021 22:11

Go and work at Aldi or Lidl. You get to pelt people with their own shopping at speed.

onedaytwodayyay · 05/11/2021 22:12

I live in Ireland, maybe we are more entitled over here! I always wish I was brave enough to confront them with some smart arsey answer but unfortunately my mortgage won't pay itself when I'm
Sacked 🤭

Where do you work?? I have two Sainsbury's, a Tesco extra, two Lidls, an Asda and a waitrose near me that I have visited many times over the 12 years we've been living here...I can only think of one time I've seen bags being packed for shoppers - when a scout troop were raising money.

Where we go in the States there is someone who stands at the end of the checkout just to pack your bags for you, so I know it happens elsewhere - just never seen it here!

If they offer then it’s fine. But I still don’t get the appeal, do you just stand and watch? Isn’t the whole process quicker if they scan and you pack?

The only time we had bags packed for basically everyone was at Christmas, and charity groups would do it with a collection tin, a person per till. At Sainsbury’s it was a homelessness charity, and obviously you didn’t have to have them pack the bags, or donate it they did, but most people would have the help and donate a bit.

NotMyCat · 05/11/2021 22:14

I shop at sainsburys and they never offer, just ask if I need any bags
Perfectly happy to pack my own, I have a system of fridge/freezer/ambient Grin on the belt and then bags

NoSquirrels · 05/11/2021 22:14

Are you in London? If so, I’d have a good idea of the sort of store and the (entitled) clientele…

wildcheesesteak · 05/11/2021 22:14

My local Morrisons and Sainsburys always ask me but I always say no.

I've only ever seen checkout staff packing for elderly customers.

Unless you genuinely need the help why the hell would you stand and watch someone else do it when they have another job to do?!

Rainbowunicorn76 · 05/11/2021 22:15

Oh ok phew!! Think I'm in the clear......... sorry people do this though, some people are very self absorbed.

Exactly what I thought!
TheAntiGardener · 05/11/2021 22:19

I feel like I’m always asked ‘do you need any help packing?’, but based on this thread, perhaps it’s just Sainsbury’s.

I’ve always assumed from how it’s phrased that it’s for customers who would struggle to pack their own shopping. Wouldn’t occur to me to take them up on the offer since I don’t. Sounds infuriating.
