Are you an entitled dickhead

Lol excuse the title but here goes... I work in a super market And I truly love the chat with all our loveky customers but one thing that makes me wanna stab people in the eye with a steak knife is when people literally hand you a big stinking, smelly bag and expect you to pack! Why the hell do people do this? Bring your own bag and pack it yourself. I'm not talking about elderly, disabled or parents with young kids that need a hand, I'm talking people in their 20s / 30s that are incapable of doing this basic task! We even have bags beside the till and many, many times people will ask "can I take a bag" then literally hand it to me to pack it whilst they dick about having a laugh with their mates. My absolute favourite is when full families come in with teenagers and insist on watching you pack, or worse start telling you how they want it packed into specific categories 🤬 whilst discussing the plans for the day 🤬🤬🤬🤬

If you're one of these people! Wake up

@Airfriedshite exactly! I used to shop for 3 households and had a lot of shopping. If the check out operator didn't start my packing so I could unload all my trolley it would just like up at the other end and take twice as long .

Again this was pre-Covid - and I'm assuming things have changed a lot over the last 18 months as when I used to regularly shop in person at major supermarket I was always asked if I needed help . I'm quite surprised at responses on here . Although maybe my experiences are now in the past .

AutumnInBustletown · 06/11/2021 10:48

One of the reasons I like shopping at Aldi!

onedaytwodayyay · 06/11/2021 11:09

@WishingWell5

Going to a supermarket with your teenage children and getting the checkout assistant to pack all your items is number 1 in the 'The Guide To Raising Self Entitled Brats Handbook'. The smarmy looks I remember being given when I had this job...

Yeah, it's odd. I had one utter snob that actually stopped her daughter when she lifted a bag to pack as apparently " that's what the staff get paid for" I cannot tell you how much she let herself down by saying those words out loud!

@HolaAmigoz

My first ever part-time job was weekends working at the newly opened Anne Summers. I shit you not, I actually had a lady come in to return a dildo. It had most definitely been used 🤮. Not relevant at all to your op but in terms of grossness, it has to be up there!!! Don’t even get me started on the types of things we’d find in the changing rooms 🤢. God knows why they ever thought it was a good idea having changing rooms in there!

I have been sick in myouth lol what did you actually say to her? Oh gosh that's vile

But no time for obviously capable people who take the piss.

Wow! With your powers of being able to spot someone who has a hidden disability that makes it harder for them to pack their shopping, you should offer yourself up to the NHS.

Never mind though, as I said, more and more of us are steering clear of your checkout, preferring to interact with a machine, so you won’t have to work on a checkout for much longer.

WellItsAJourney · 06/11/2021 13:14

Tbf OP it is part of your job. I've never bought clothes that haven't been bagged for me and I go to sainsburys as they pack the shopping. We all have shitty parts of our jobs though, I have to do things for others that I don't particularly want to or enjoy as part of my job.

Saying you don't want to pack a customers bag is like saying you are a care worker and don't like wiping bums. I'm sure no one likes wiping anyone else's bums but it's part of their job.

Cuddlywaterfall · 06/11/2021 13:33

God this thread is eye opening. People are awful!! I don't think I've ever been asked if I want my bags packed at my sainsburys but tbh I usually do Scan and Shop anyway
But to stand there watching while the poor checkout person packs your manky old bag ShockShock.
Years ago in Ireland all the supermarkets employed bag packers at all the checkouts, that was ace mind you. My friend did it as a summer job and hated it Grin.
Sometimes the local Scouts pack bags to raise money - I give them £5 to distract my kids while I do it Grin

onedaytwodayyay · 06/11/2021 14:44

@BoredZelda

I guess after a 7 hr shift of standing on my feet all day with a 15 min break it just gets tiring.

Is this at a major supermarket? Because that is against the law.

Are the checkouts in the uk like big proper belts and everything? You can't be doing your whole shop on a tiny self serve?

Asda has self scan with conveyor belts. At other major supermarkets they have a handheld console you can scan your shopping as you shop.

We get 20 mins when we work up to 7 hrs but by the time you maybe buy a drink or make a coffee or something it's time to head back . After that it's 1/2 unpaid and two 15 mins. I'm always in 7hrs tho

@Airfriedshite

No I am not an entitled dickhead but I think you are. You buy something in a shop they put it in a bag wth is wrong with that if you don't like it get a different job. If the checkout staff didnt assist me with packing it would hold up the queue as I am still unpacking trolley and no room left at packing end (yes I buy alot) they always help with good grace unless it's aldi and I dont go there very often. If that's all you have to get wound up about you are very lucky
I'm most definitely not entitled. You completely missed my point!!!! If someone needs help that's different- I'm specifically referring to the people that hand over filthy/or clean bags to the cashier and expect it done whilst they scratch their arse/ make a TikTok video/ make a phone call or continue to f**k off continually carrying on with shopping that they've 'forgotten' to me that is very rude and id be so cross if my children did this. Maybe you think differently tho. Fair enough!

Can I join in op! I'm sick to death of being asked "do I have to pay for a bag?" And then "how much?" Then a rant about how they should be free. Fuck off it's been UK law for years now! Stop acting like you haven't heard about it.

Oh yes, please join me! I love a good retail
Moan Grin today I had someone return because they bought salt and already had one in the cupboard so they came al the way back to get their 29p refund. I could not believe. Was almost telling her to donate it to the food bank in the foyer 🤭

I have so many. Customers seem to turn into raging idiots the moment they enter the store. And yes to asking for a refund on something less than a £1 and holding up entire queues. At the moment it's the queues into shops where people seem to annoy me the most.

midsomermurderess · 06/11/2021 15:10

What word did people use before the now ubiquitous 'entitled'?

I have lots too, I'll have to have a think as I tend to forget that the second I leave. I remember my mum worked in M&S and some one retuned a real xmas tree after Xmas because he thought it was artificial and therefore wanted his full refund!

onedaytwodayyay · 06/11/2021 15:13

I don't even really understand why people don't bring their own bags when shopping (of course we all can forget) but the same ones every week do big massive £100 shops and try to squeeze it all into our wee bags? I think the big bags for life make it much easier to pack

Lots of people count every penny. Even if they don't if they buy something faulty etc they should be able to get a refund if they want one.
EBearhug · 06/11/2021 15:18

I was just in Waitrose and I can't remember if she asked me if I needed help with my bags.

Haha I fear I may have started something! If you need help tho, there's no harm in asking someone to help pack. As long as you don't whip out a copy of the latest glossy and start reading as the cashier packs 😂😂
OP posts:
EBearhug · 06/11/2021 15:28

Talking of glossy magazines,the papercut I gained from putting the Waitrose magazine into my bag has only just stopped bleeding, so I probably should have asked for help for my own safety. (If I could have predicted it.) It's obviously special sharp Waitrose paper.

Oh no 🙈 why are paper cuts so flipping sore? Something so simple- yet such pain 😒

I work in a knock Knack shop. If people count every penny they shouldn't be purchasing shit from my workplace.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 06/11/2021 15:41

YANBU! Don't understand why any able bodied person would expect you to pack their bags!

I'm definitely not a dick head. I can't stand it when the Cubs or scouts are in the supermarket asking for money to pack your bags! Er... no thanks! I want my shopping packed in an orderly manner with no smashed eggs or crushed biscuits!

ShaneTheThird · 06/11/2021 15:41

I have customers talking over other customers whilst I'm serving, asking me dumbass questions that could wait.
Customers who chat on the phone and ignore me whilst I serve or even chat to their mate next to them the whole time.

Don't get me started on them fuckers who say no to a bag then as soon as I finish the transaction look at me like I'm stupid and ask where their bag is... The one they said no to.

It's a tough life in retail. I had a man shout at me because I wouldn't serve him .... I had worked snd extra 15 mins over my shift and was almost late to pick up my children from school. He was soooo rude and I was so embarrassed but hey ho he really needed his Parisian loaf as a matter of extreme urgency that I was worth shouting at !
