An MP has just been stabbed.

Breaking news on Sky. David Amess MP has been stabbed ‘multiple times’. Feels like Jo Cox all over again, surely MPs need security around them? Some of the comments they receive on social media are off the scale. All parties as well. I can’t imagine a US Senator wandering around without security?

@PersonaNonGarter

This is where Angela Rayner’s ‘scum’ remarks get us.

People genuinely believe politicians are justified targets of abuse.

God yes, let's blame a woman for male violence 🙄
Sirzy · 15/10/2021 14:40

Awful. Party political views are irrelevant at times like this, not agreeing with someone’s politics is never a reason for something like this

SueSaid · 15/10/2021 14:40

'This is complete bollocks and an attempt to defect blame. Who would you have blamed if it had been an MP who wasn’t a Tory?'

Well he was wasn't he. Just weeks after 'Tory scum' was trending everywhere.

RedToothBrush · 15/10/2021 14:41

I wish I could say I was surprised.

I'm not.

I can't help but feel it was just a matter of time.

Jaysmith71 · 15/10/2021 14:41

The fact he has not been flown straight to hospital is either very good or very bad news.

PersonaNonGarter · 15/10/2021 14:42

‘Scum’ - this is how people start to believe that others are below them, worthy of contempt, violence and abuse.

People must show each other respect. ‘Scum’ is intended to disrespect.

YearsSinceISawYou · 15/10/2021 14:42

Angela Raynor says she is "horrified".

Maybe she ought to engage her brain before she comes out with her 'scum' remarks that are bound to embolden some into this type of action.

Personally, I think she should have been suspended for that remark and at the very least now, she should admit she was wrong for saying it.

It's coming to something when a leading politician can say these remarks without thinking they could be used to incite violence or maybe she just doesn't care.

KingsleyShacklebolt · 15/10/2021 14:42

Horrendous. Poor man.

Also agree that Angela Raynor needs to take a long, hard look at herself and her refusal to climb down over the language she used about Conservative politicians. Because some people will obviously take that as approval to do this sort of thing.

The upshot of all of this is that constituency surgeries will end, MPs just won't be willing to put themselves in that position. I don't blame them either.

MedusasBadHairDay · 15/10/2021 14:43

@Tealightsandd

I'm not especially keen on Angela but the last thing we need right now is a witch-hunt - stirring up more hate - against another MP.
This. This ridiculous spiral of hatred needs to stop. It doesn't end well for anyone.
freshcarnation · 15/10/2021 14:43

He's a really nice man. Shocked.

KirstenBlest · 15/10/2021 14:43

I'm shocked to the core

KingsleyShacklebolt · 15/10/2021 14:43

One wee problem with that....

Tealightsandd · 15/10/2021 14:43

@MarshaBradyo

It’s not going to help if politicians normalise abuse

Really sad this has happened

Equating a schoolyard slur (scum) with abuse & actual physical violence is part of the problem.

A childish name is not the same as literal violence.

I'm not keen on Angela (I prefer David Aness, personally) but it is ridiculous to blame her - and the immediate urge in today's society - to find a whipping boy is part of the problem.

Blossomtoes · 15/10/2021 14:44

Well he was wasn't he. Just weeks after 'Tory scum' was trending everywhere.

What triggered Jo Cox’s killer then? And the people making threats against Rosie Duffield? And the vile people who physically threatened Anna Soubrey because she wasn’t Tory enough?
JumperandJacket · 15/10/2021 14:44

It’s terrible news. I wish him a full recovery.

It’s well past time for MPs to have security. Four have been stabbed or shot in the last 20 years and many other plans to murder have been uncovered. Given there are only 650 of them, it must be the most dangerous job in the country.

MarshaBradyo · 15/10/2021 14:44

Verbal abuse is still abuse

Is that the society you want?

Bloody hell people have low standards.

WorraLiberty · 15/10/2021 14:44

I've known David and his family for most of my life. He's a lovely man and my thoughts are with them all Thanks

Notwithstanding the fact that most US Senate members do NOT have constant security, there are only 100 senators in the US Senate, whereas we have over 650 MPs, plus many more in the Lords.

This is not to say, of course, that MPs don't deserve to be safe in their work, but can you imagine the cost of round-the-clock security staff for all of them?

FourTeaFallOut · 15/10/2021 14:45

When MPs dehumanise the opposition and further legitimise the idea that there is something inherently unworthy in the speaker, rather than the opinion they hold, then you are signalling that hatred is the currency of politics and hatred is solution.

Tealightsandd · 15/10/2021 14:45

Anyway it feels unseemly engaging in this kind of debate whilst he's still being treated.

I really do hope he's ok.

His poor family. My thoughts are with them, and his friends and colleagues.

RedToothBrush · 15/10/2021 14:45

@Tealightsandd

The rise of violence in our society is the cause.

This.

The rise of violence is always preceded by the rise of abuse unfortunately.

Violent acts are part of an identifable escalating pattern of behaviour.

Its exceptional rare for violent acts to come out of no where with no incidents or issues previously to give a warning sign.

Decaffe · 15/10/2021 14:45

@BlowDryRat

Awful thing to happen. I'm no Tory but I hope he pulls through.
Was the preface to your good wishes really necessary?
DumplingsAndStew · 15/10/2021 14:45

@JaniieJones

I'm surprised he is apparently still been treated at the scene it's been ages since the first report. Surely best place to treat him would be at a hospital. Even if unsurvivable injuries just get him to a hospital.
A patient needs to be stable before transfer can be attempted. Perhaps that isn't the case yet 🙁
YearsSinceISawYou · 15/10/2021 14:46

@lemmein

Like it or not, she is in the mix or are you saying because she's a woman she may not have realised the effect her words might have had and should be given a free pass? Patronising, much.

She helped to light the torch and most reasonable people-probably not her- will realise this.

Really? I provided some examples above. .
