Breaking news on Sky. David Amess MP has been stabbed ‘multiple times’. Feels like Jo Cox all over again, surely MPs need security around them? Some of the comments they receive on social media are off the scale. All parties as well. I can’t imagine a US Senator wandering around without security?

@JaniieJones

I'm surprised he is apparently still been treated at the scene it's been ages since the first report. Surely best place to treat him would be at a hospital. Even if unsurvivable injuries just get him to a hospital.
I assumed that they're superficial wounds and therefore hospital treatment isn't required. I really hope that's the case.

I hope the culprit has been detained.

@Tealightsandd

I'm not especially keen on Angela but the last thing we need right now is a witch-hunt - stirring up more hate - against another MP.
Exactly.

How about this www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/appalling-attack-gp-surgery-staff-21607333.amp

Nobody should be attacked for going about their business.

I only know his name from the Brass Eye episode about Cake.

@WorraLiberty

I've known David and his family for most of my life. He's a lovely man and my thoughts are with them all Thanks
Worra i have just been reading about everything he has done for animal welfare and for refugees and he seems just the sort of person you would want to be representing us as an MP. I hope so much he recovers. Thanks
Jaysmith71 · 15/10/2021 14:48

Air Ambulance seems to have left the scene empty.

boogiewithasuitcase · 15/10/2021 14:48

Awful news.

I completely agree with this. I don't think it's got anything to do with Angela Rayner at all (whom I don't much like). And it wasn't that long ago that female Labour MPs were tearfully begging Johnson in the Hoc to stop stoking division, as they were getting death threats and were all the more frightened as one of their own had been murdered. I hope David Amess makes a full recovery and that the perpetrator has the full weight of the law thrown at him.
LadyWithLapdog · 15/10/2021 14:49

DFO with she lit the torch. Tories have been called scum for decades. How about we wait and see what this is about.

dreamingbohemian · 15/10/2021 14:49

There's no point blaming Angela when we have no idea who did this and why. For all we know this was a highly disturbed individual with no political motive at all.

Somanysocks · 15/10/2021 14:49

They had to operate before moving him.

SueSaid · 15/10/2021 14:49

'God yes, let's blame a woman for male violence'

Or, let's acknowledge the deputy leader of the opposition should not use divisive and hate filled language. She should try intelligence rather than awful slurs which may well whip up violent people.

I can't believe the ' but Jo Cox' whataboutery. Yes no one had called her scum it was a different set of tragic events.

The point is to use language like scum will have a very negative effect won't it?!

Cornettoninja · 15/10/2021 14:50

What triggered Jo Cox’s killer then? And the people making threats against Rosie Duffield? And the vile people who physically threatened Anna Soubrey because she wasn’t Tory enough?

Exactly.

It’s comforting to think we can draw direct links and make a nice tidy equation to explain away terrible acts but the truth is that humanity is much more complex and, imho, our society is currently much sicker than that.

I hope David Aness is receiving good care and his family support.

Picaninny, letter boxes, bum boys, take your pick.

@Jaysmith71

Air Ambulance seems to have left the scene empty.
...No. It has repositioned and now has engines off.
Isababybel · 15/10/2021 14:52

Well i certainly wouldn't want him to represent me given his stance on abortion and gay rights

HowardNoir · 15/10/2021 14:52

It was a 'meet your MP' event, why didn't he have better security? It's nothing to do with Angela, or his homophobic views or whether everyone likes him or not. No one should be stabbed.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 15/10/2021 14:52

Jesus the narrative of blame has started already and of course it alights upon a woman Hmm

I don’t agree with her comments, but my God it was an actual MAN who did this. Already he need take no responsibility for his actions, well done MN.

madisonbridges · 15/10/2021 14:53

I'm not keen on Angela (I prefer David Aness, personally) but it is ridiculous to blame her - and the immediate urge in today's society - to find a whipping boy is part of the problem.

But she's not just a random person saying it. She's a colleague of all MPs and the deputy leader of the opposition. It could perfectly well turn out to be that her words had no bearing on this man's actions, but surely its not too much to ask that people in positions of influence act with some circumspection. Especially in the light of previous incidents.

No, it's in Brentwood.

Oh well yes if you want to start a thread to discuss Johnson's offensive language I'll agree with you. It is unacceptable, correct.
AlexaShutUp · 15/10/2021 14:54

Angela Rayner was wrong to use the word scum. Abuse is not conducive to a democratic debate.

However, I don't think she should be blamed for this. We don't need another witch hunt.

Sadly, David Amess is not the first MP to be attacked in the course of fulfilling his public duties, and I'm afraid he probably won't be the last. I hope this latest incident prompts a discussion around better security for our MPs.

Let's not make this into another argument. Let's just hope that the poor man makes a full recovery as quickly as possible.

Tealightsandd · 15/10/2021 14:54

I'll say one more thing. I have someone very close to me who has suffered genuine abuse - physical and verbal. It is actually extremely offensive to equate a childish schoolyard name-calling - something that has been going on (without stabbings or the level of hate seen today) - for decades.

It is not only offensive and trivialising of real abuse (be it physical or verbal) but it takes away from the fact that there is only one person responsible. The one who did it.

(An example of an MP suffering real abuse is Rosie Duffield.)

FourTeaFallOut · 15/10/2021 14:54

@LadyWithLapdog

Ahem, shall we talk about Johnson and his slurs?
Absolutely. We need to talk about the piss poor nature of our political landscape.
