DH was born in 1976. He claims to have not taken a lunchbox in school but used Tupperware. Apparently “no one had lunchboxes”. I was born in 1985 and definitely did have a lunchbox (square plastic with a handle and my little pony”.

So…if you were born in the 70s/early 80s did you have a lunchbox?

Such great pictures.

Between me and my brother we had the snoopy one, the Roland rat one, the my little pony one and the forever friends one

Baystard · 15/10/2021 07:01

I really wanted the MLP one up thread but had Rainbow Brite. Red, with a yellow handle. Looking back I realise that the MLP girls probably often got each others lunches as around 50% of the girls had the same lunchbox and I have doubts the staff would be too bothered provided each child was fed.

MsJuniper · 15/10/2021 07:02

I was born the same year as your DH and had one of those hard plastic lunchboxes with a handle and matching flask, although I had school dinners so it was mainly used for school trips etc. I can't remember what character was on it.

Bluesheep8 · 15/10/2021 07:05

Roughnecks' flasks were popular for cold drinks

I saw one in a charity shop a few weeks ago, took me right back! I recall them being in red or a turquoise colour. Mine was red, I can still remember it having a very distinctive smell which seemed to affect the flavour of the drink.
Orange squash à la Roughneck is the taste of 1980 for me! Grin

Born in mid-70s. Had this orange Tupperware lunchbox with road signs on the back. Was tiny! Maybe we ate less then.

@Obsidiansphere

Late 70’s and my lunch box was an old ice cream container Grin
This made me laugh. I've literally just sent my 11 year old off to school with his lunch in an old ice cream container. Grin

Born 1978, I used an old ice cream tub for my lunch box until the wonderful day when my dad returned from a business trip in America with a Muppets lunch box, complete with flask (which yes, did always give squash a particular flavour!)

I was born in 1985 and had a red lunchbox with Spot the Dog on it in 1989. I really wanted a My Little Pony one. After by I upgraded to a Forever Friends one in a fetching shade of peach.

I was born in the late 70s and had an old ice-cream box. That was at secondary school though.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 15/10/2021 07:22

Born early 70s. Vaguely remember a matching navy roughneck flask & lunch box set, maybe had Snoopy on the front (I honestly can’t remember the picture lol). Held a Tupperware round pot with jelly with fruit cocktail set inside.

I think that was in the infants, in juniors I had school meals as my Mum was one of the cooks. She retired a couple of years ago, she’d worked in school kitchens for over 40 years!

coldwarenigma · 15/10/2021 07:35

Born 1966, I had tupperware box and beaker during summer and a small flask during winter. My DC born late 80s and early 90s had character lunchboxes with handles.

Howshouldibehave · 15/10/2021 07:42

@plinkplinkfizzer

No packed lunches are a fairly new thing . But a play piece was a thing .🥪.
Packed lunches are not new!?

What is a ‘play piece’ though-I’m intrigued!

Svalberg · 15/10/2021 07:52

I'd say packed lunches are a 70s thing. Nobody at primary school in the 60s/early 70s was allowed them, it was school dinners or home lunch. At secondary, it was the same with an option after the 2nd year for a lighter lunch for those who had a full meal in the evening. I think packed lunches became a thing at our school in 75/76ish. We certainly all had them in 6th form

HuckleberryJam · 15/10/2021 07:56

Born 71. People just used tupperware or an ice cream.box

ShoeJunkie · 15/10/2021 08:00

BogRollBOGOF · 15/10/2021 08:05

1981
I was only allowed to have school dinners. No packed lunches.
How I lusted over My Little Pony lunch boxes!

(Really wanted a Poochie school bag too)

mafted · 15/10/2021 08:18

While I loved my snoopy lunchbox the years of lunches infused with plastic and orange squash lead to my my absolute loathing of packed lunches and picnics by secondary school, I still feel sick at the thought of them now.

Echobelly · 15/10/2021 08:18

Born in 1977 and definitely everyone had character lunchboxes. I think I had a He-Man one and maybe a M.A.S.K one later - as you can tell, I was a bit of a tomboy.

CottageOnTheHill · 15/10/2021 08:45

@Howshouldibehave a play piece was a snack for playtime. I’m not sure if it’s a Scottish saying or not. I always had a play piece.

AuntDympna · 15/10/2021 08:48

Born in 68. Sandwich box and tartan flask. In a drawstring bag made of old curtain fabríc.

Ahh-we just called it ‘snack’!

Equimum · 15/10/2021 08:52

Born early 1980s and I had a pink Annie lunchbox. The flask was pink with with a red lid. I remember it so well. Ironically, my kids now have Sistema bento boxes (although they are put in the obligatory Smiggle carry bags!

chocolatecentral6 · 15/10/2021 10:40

I had a Spot the dog one!

born 1974. I definitely had a lunchbox in primary. I was 8/9 and I remember my stepDM put a Mr Kiplings apple pie in there which collapsed and spread itself across everything. I don't remember what was on the front which i'm quite sad about. It was blue though. I remember that...
