DH was born in 1976. He claims to have not taken a lunchbox in school but used Tupperware. Apparently “no one had lunchboxes”. I was born in 1985 and definitely did have a lunchbox (square plastic with a handle and my little pony”.

So…if you were born in the 70s/early 80s did you have a lunchbox?

@HenriettaVioletta

Lol *@SunShinesBrightly* 😂 I'm sure he has redeeming qualities
Finding it very hard to think of any right now. 😅

I was born 1976 and had a proper Snoopy lunchbox with handle and flask. I loved it and still miss it.

BlackeyedSusan · 14/10/2021 22:26

plastic tupperware type box. my mates was better as hers had a sliding compartment divider and she got cake in kitchen roll. I got a sandwich and an apple and a drink of squash in a tuperware beaker with a lid.

sandwiches we had between us:
jam
cheese
cheese and beetroot.
sandwich spread
salad creme (just salad creme)
dripping and salt. (heart attack in a box)

by the time I was at secondary those flasks were just coming out, so presumably the younger kids got the box that went with them. They were all the rage when I was teaching, but by the time my children went to school they no longer existed.

I started school in 1983 and I remember having a red snoopy lunchbox with a wee flask inside and a pink My Little Pony one with a blu handle at some point too.

RaoulDufysCat · 14/10/2021 22:26

Packed lunches aren't new. I was born in the late 60s and had packed lunches for most of my childhood. I had a bag with Woodstock from Peanuts on it and tupperware/sandwich wrapped in foil inside. I never had a flask for drinks though, we just had glasses of water like the school dinner children.

mayblossominapril · 14/10/2021 22:26

I went to primary school in the mid 1980s definitely had a suitcase style lunch box. Can’t remember what was on mine but definitely remember Care Bears, rainbow bright, puddle lane, snoopy and my little pony lunch boxes

kierenthecommunity · 14/10/2021 22:27

I was born in 1970 and had a snoopy lunchbox with a matching flask. Must have been about 9, I reckon. They were definitely a thing!

71 here and me too. Although I don’t remember it having the design the PP posted. I thought it was Snoopy lying on his kennel

PumpkinsandTea · 14/10/2021 22:27

I, and everyone in my school, had a Bluebird plastic lunchbox with a handle!

MsFogi · 14/10/2021 22:27

Well... we started with tupperware but then the real cool kids with "connections" in America got tin luhchboxes (in the shape of an American school bus) sent over. That was the ultimate status symbol. My mother managed to get an aunt in America to send over a tin lunchbox however sadly she didn't specify the ned for a school bus so I got a rectangular tin lunchbox with Little House on the Prairie on it. This was cooler than no lunch box but defiantly not in the league of School Bus cool. A few years later everyone had tin school lunchboxes but for those of us born in 72/73 I think that it was very split between cool/connected early adopters and those who caught up later.

Didiplanthis · 14/10/2021 22:27

Started school 1979... very few had those lunchboxes until about 1982 ish when I was 8.. most had plastic tubs with foil wrapped sandwiches. I remember having a blue one for the last few years of primary but definitely not the first few years. I guess they became mainstream around then.

kierenthecommunity · 14/10/2021 22:27

Although I don’t remember using the flask much as it took up half the room…

PumpkinsandTea · 14/10/2021 22:27

To clarify, I was at primary in the 80s

HenriettaVioletta · 14/10/2021 22:29

Now if we're talking content ... two slices of bread so wholemeal it was mostly bran. On one slice and one slice only, a knob of butter too hard to spread even on the slice of bran, so just left there by my mum after it had ripped it slightly. A slice of ham between the two slices. And an apple (lightly bruised.)

This was the height of sophistication in 1977/8 at my school - only for the lucky few.

@Tomnooktoldmeto

Born in 1969 we were not allowed packed lunch in Primary school, I attended 3 and it was hot lunch or home for dinner

At secondary I took sandwiches in clingfilm and in the winter had a Heinz tomato soup rough neck flask that never kept anything more than lukewarm

See I was Born in 69 too and do not remember any packed lunches either . Play 🥪 piece is a Scottish thing .
Crackletranton · 14/10/2021 22:29

I've still got my My Little Pony lunchbox, although the flask is long gone. Always had weak orange squash in it. Sandwiches were always wrapped in foil.
My friend always had a Vitalite tub for her lunch. She sometimes had beansprouts, which in the 80s was... unusual Grin
I think at secondary school Gino Ginelli tubs were the thing to have.

Rolypolyfishheads · 14/10/2021 22:30

I was born in 1977 and in the mid 80's I had this lunchbox.

Older.

Had a plain Tupperware. There were no decorated ‘lunch boxes’. Some people had old biscuit tins.

Devonchills · 14/10/2021 22:31

Wow the snoopy ones seemed to have been very popular judging by all the responses.

MichelleScarn · 14/10/2021 22:31

I had a Jem lunchbox, it was truly, truly outrageous!.

Born in 1975 and also had the snoopy lunchbox and flask. My older brother had a Star Wars one

Thirtyrock39 · 14/10/2021 22:32

Born in 77 -80s lunchboxes were so much better than today's fabric things. They were hard plastic with space for a flask and just enough room for a packed lunch and so much easier to clean than modern day ones. I had a Roland rat one I think

Badabingbadabum · 14/10/2021 22:32

I had a two lunchboxes, one was pretty much tupperware but with a picture of winnie the pooh on the lid, the other one had a handle and thermos and was 'Spam gang' - a promotional item from spam! I do remember for family days out we used tupperware though.

Badabingbadabum · 14/10/2021 22:33

Jesus, I want that lunchbox!
AChickenCalledDaal · 14/10/2021 22:33

I have found my people! I had this Snoopy lunchbox. It is still at my parents' house and in a couple of weeks time we have the arduous job of clearing out all their old stuff prior to selling the house.

DH is going to be very cross that I want to keep the lunchbox ... and now I will be able to blame Mumsnet!
