Things you enjoy which are supposed to be terrible

I'm inspired by a thread about ""Nice" Things That Aren't Actually Nice" over on the AIBU board.

I'd love to know about things you (secretly or not-so-secretly) love which you're "supposed" to find dull, inconvenient, or just plain crap.

For me: the cheapest tinned vegetables, replacement bus services (nicer view sometimes!), Travelodges.

Another here for cheap biscuits - mmmmm!!!!

Non sunny weather. I would enjoy it even more if everyone else stopped moaning.

The idea of sitting on a balmy, sun-kissed Jamaican beach just bores me to tears. I would honestly much prefer a slightly tacky British seaside resort. Another reason why it irked me so much when everybody went on about ending up with some rubbish 'staycation' - when they didn't mean a staycation at all, but actually just a normal UK holiday - when the pandemic meant they couldn't have a 'proper' holiday, so they booked up my usual holiday options instead and sent the demand, and also the prices, skyrocketing - and didn't even enjoy it!!

Also, I couldn't give a stuff for some fancy-pants 'very special occasion' Michelin-starred restaurant run by a young celebrity chef, where you get a massive square plate with a teeny-weeny bit of rare-cooked gourmand fare with something or other drizzled all around the edge. I really do not want it, thanks.

No, give me a huge, stacked up plate at a greasy spoon, cooked by a grandmother who's been there for 25+ years and knows what people actually want and find satisfying - not what they've read in a lifestyle periodical that they supposedly should want and pay over the odds for and then stop off at the chippy on the way home, because they're still really hungry !

Considering how often they end up on the things that people don't like even though everyone else does lists on here I would like to say I love spa days and cupcakes- actual cupcakes not just fairy cakes although I love them too. I love the swirly pretty icing/frosting on a cupcake and the different flavours you can get (although I do agree that often the cake itself is dry and I don't like them). I also love hotels and pubs, including Wetherspoons.

Tinned baked beans and mini sausages

Oooh yes!

I've got a veggie version in might have that with a baked potato tonight

Cheesy 90s/00s pop music

I'm more 70's/80's/early 90's but yes the cheesier the better.

Do you listen to absolute radio? I love absolute 80's and 70's mainly and will even occasionally put their country station on

singlemama91 · 08/10/2021 17:17

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

There are a number of other tv shows I also totally love that tend to be looked down on by others.

You can keep your Attenboroughs and your top-drawer BBC period dramas - I genuinely prefer to watch an old Bullseye on Challenge and be there on the edge of my seat, itching to find out whether they win the speed boat on top of keeping all their prizes (teasmade, novelty Mickey Mouse landline phone, his 'n' hers matching carriage clocks....); or lose the lot and go away with nothing but their BFH Grin

This is me, I love the challenge channel
WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 08/10/2021 17:20

@Graphista

Crime and sci-fi don't particularly tickle my own personal pickle, but oh yes, the cheesy old sitcoms! "Ooooh, Betty, the cat's just done a whoopsie and I'm experiencing my trouble again!" Grin

Magpiecomplex · 08/10/2021 17:22

Excel. Give me a spreadsheet and I'm a happy bunny. Grin

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 08/10/2021 17:22

We're watching Bullseye right now, in fact!!

AnyFucker · 08/10/2021 17:22

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

My mums terrified of flying and so we never went overseas for holidays. We went butlins/pontine/caravan parks and Uk seaside towns and we had a GREAT time. Still got a soft spot for skeggy, weymouth, Margate and Brighton - well not Brighton proper but around that area.

Uk seasides are totally different to overseas ones and I think a lot more fun.

I couldn't afford overseas holidays when dd was little and took her on similar holidays and she loved them too.

Food wise I think you need to visit us here in Scotland!

All day breakfasts abound! Not to mention what we call "hot rolls" which is a yummy crusty bread roll (I've said it that way cos all the other names start bun fights on mn!) filled with 1/2/3 fry up breakfast items. My personal choice is usually a fried egg, tattie scone and fried mushrooms. Most places do the egg perfectly ie white cooked solid yolk still runny and the yolk bursts with the first bite, work it so the yolk drips onto the plate/container and then mop it up with the rest of the roll - heaven!

Also soup and chips which seems not to be a thing down south

Ham egg and chips another very popular dish up here that's my mums favourite

Macaroni cheese pies

Ooh mouth watering here...

@smallandimperfectlyformed I prefer fairy cakes myself but just wanted to say if it's dry it's not a proper/good cupcake a lot of people think a cupcake is just a bigger heavily iced fairy cake but it really shouldn't be, cupcakes are meant to be more moist and a bit more dense than fairy cakes

FizzyPink · 08/10/2021 17:28

Oh yes to budgeting, saving money and tracking how close we are to our goal by inputting every penny into my giant spreadsheet Blush

Starbucks coffee
Ironing
Rainy weather

BestIsWest · 08/10/2021 17:29

Cleaning the oven.

Premier Inns especially with a meal deal.

I don’t commute any more but (as a pp said) I used to love it when the train had to go by a different route.

Soggychip · 08/10/2021 17:30

Winter and it getting dark at 3.30 ish

waybill · 08/10/2021 17:30

Cheapo value baked beans. I find Heinz ones way too sweet and the sauce too thick and cloying.

IntermittentParps · 08/10/2021 17:30

Agree with airports and aeroplane food, Blackpool and pork scratchings (especially when you get one with a long wiry hair attached).

I love those dreadful IKEA hotdogs.

Cheap white sliced bread, especially with bacon.

Flat pop.

Chain cafes. Was in a busy bit of London the other day at lunchtime and could have gone somewhere artisan, but just actually fancied a Pret. A slightly soggy tuna melt and a production-line matcha latte really hit the spot.

Tig33 · 08/10/2021 17:33

Processed cheese. Any kind cheese slices, cheese spread in a tube, cheese strings yum

Tig33 · 08/10/2021 17:34

Plucking chin hairs so satisfying
