on the phone to the garage mechanic who has just done my MOT when he phoned to tell me when to get the car.

Why? Why did I do that ? he will think I am mad won't he? He already thinks I'm odd because my mileage is so low because I just pop to the shops and back in the car.

My DD was in the hallway and overheard me and was wetting herself.

Every day I find new ways to embarrass myself. Grin

This thread made me laugh. It's cute how many of you say "I love you" so much.

When I worked in a fast food place I was manning the drive thru head set whilst also working on one of the front tills inside the restaurant. I told a customer at the till inside the restaurant after he finished telling me his order "Thank you, please drive to the next window". He just stood staring at me in disbelief and slight grin, I was frozen for a sec, probably went red, then said "Sorry, that'll be £.......".

Also have shouted out "Thank you!!", Instead of "Next please!!"

@MotherOfBeardedDragons

Not quite the same, more of a tongue tie thing, but I phoned the kids school, looking for the number of someone who was running a club there and said, “Hi, I’m looking for X person, but I wondered if you could help me because I’m not having any sex.” I meant success! Quickly tried to save by saying, “I’m so sorry, so sorry, I meant to say that I’m not having any Sex

I wanted to die.

This is amazing

I said 'ok bye, love you' to the big boss once. He didn't say anything for a week or so. Then ended an email with 'ps love you too🤣🤣'
We both just burst out laughing next time we were in the office

After a long haul flight, I arrived in Turkey and flagged down a cab driver who walked me to his car.

For whatever reason I interpreted his reach for the car door as trying to shake my hand. I was so committed to my mistake that I rolled with it and shook his hand vigorously as if we had just sorted a deal.

I’d also conveniently forgotten that the driver’s side is on the left in Turkey and then proceeded to try and get in the wrong side. I suspect it looked like I was trying to drive his car on top of being a total weirdo/the most formal tourist he had ever picked up.

@Moonshine90

I once was in an interview and very nervous, they asked me a question about customer service and I said ‘cuntstomers’ went bright red and stumbled through the rest before going home to die silently

Can we get the MNer on this thread who sucked on her dentist's finger? That's one of my all-time faves!

I was once in a meeting when a fairly new junior assistant entered and my colleague politely asked if we had met yet. I replied 'ohhhhhh yes, I know Harry' and, although I had indeed briefly met him, I for some unknown reason then added to this already bizarre reply a little wink?! I have absolutely no idea why I effectively suggested that I was having some kind of illicit affair with poor young Harry, who looked equally horrified during the world's longest awkward silence...

I've done one this evening - DH was out for a sport thing and DS & I arranged to meet him in a bar prior to cinema . It was tipping down. Saw DH at the bar with friends ( facing away from me - same hair cut ) I rubbed my wet coat sleeves over his ears. Except it wasn't DH. Man and friends took in good spirit. ( in my defence my glasses were steamed up ) If ever one could see a face like a moving mask of horror - it was me and DS , but the chaps were lovely and laughed.

@VoluptuaSneezelips

I bumped into an old friend of mine who I grew up with and who was back in the area visiting. Hadn't seen her in about 20 years and turns our she hadn't heard about my mum passing away a few years earlier. So as part of catching up she asked me 'How's your mum?' I still to this day don't why I did this but in the most deadpan tone i have ever uttered I said 'Dead'. I don't know which one of us was more mortified.
Genuine question, how is the proper way of saying it? When my DF died when I was 16 I phoned my DB and in the loudest strongest Yorkshire accent (I'm from Yorkshire but imagine farmer Yorkshire) told him 'Oi, Me dad's dead!) Did roughly the same thing with the next 6 deaths too.
Slavica · 05/10/2021 07:35

@ImNotCrazyIWasTested, I imagine one would say something like "Thanks for asking, but mum died (or passed away) last year (or whenever it was)."

FluffyWhiteBird · 05/10/2021 12:12

@ImNotCeazyIWasTested I say I'm phoning to tell you so-and- so has passed away, if I'm calling them or sadly they've passed away, if I'm asked how they are.

@ImNotCrazyIWasTested
I have done similar with other deaths in the family too. I know that the best way is to be polite and respond in the ways suggested, For some reason though my brain has different idea's and decides to blurt the news out in a highly inappropriate and/or upsetting way. To be honest though in my person experience people (especially those closest who know you well) won't hold it against you. Tend to just put it down to grief so I don't worry about it too much anymore.
