What are the papers trying to hint about Meghan?

ohfook · 26/09/2021 08:29

My curiosity is getting the better of me here. I know when papers can't print something, they hint and hint terribly:
-the falling out between the d.o.c & her Norfolk friend

  • comparing the guy who plays lord grantham to Ryan giggs etc.

But I just can't figure out what they're trying to say by banging on and on about the duchess of Sussex's 'unseasonably warm coat'. There's easily been 5 articles in the dm about it. I know I shouldn't care, but I'm bored and sleep deprived so if anyone would like to humour me, I'm all ears!

I should probably add I quite like Meghan and I'm trying to drop my mindless scrolling of the daily Mail so if you're going to slate either party, I'd much prefer that it was the mail!

I'm a pear shape with a high waist, and quite short too. I have to be careful with dresses and wide leg trousers, or I morph into a shapeless mass....Grin

But that’s not judging her outfits, that’s judging her body, and no you’re not entitled to do that.

I agree. That particular post was really awful. I can’t imagine critiquing another persons body like that, who even thinks those things never mind says or writes about them. Nobody is entitled to do that. And to say a woman has a thick waist when she’s not long had a baby...and on a parenting site. Meghan has been called tone deaf and told to read the room. Maybe some posters here should do that.

But she’s always had a thick waist, baby or not. She has good features like anyone, but her style choices don’t accentuate them.

You can’t critique an outfit without acknowledging why it doesn’t work. She works in fashion, it’s not like I’m taking a needless swipe at Mary Beard or something.

I think you all need to calm down a bit. Meghan is a tough cookie, she went into the cut throat acting business where looks are everything - do you really think she would’ve got the part in Suits on acting merit alone? Of course not. But you can’t trade on your looks as an actress and fashion ambassador without that criticism.

@amusedtodeath1

They donated two boxes of veg, a cooker and some copies of the bench to the school.
Right, so a heck of a lot of publicity for a very small outlay.

And to say a woman has a thick waist when she’s not long had a baby...and on a parenting site
She hasn’t got a thick waist because she’s just had a baby. She has a square body shape. The Valentino dress was terrible on her though. High neck and sleeves finishing level with the bust, and then the dress was far too short. She can look so much better. Not in the red monstrosity or in trousers so long they’re tripping her up though.

It's nothing to do with the mail insinuating she is pregnant. They are saying outright that she and Harry are wearing hidden microphones for their Netflix documentaries and recording conversations without others being aware.

Pretty sure this is the truth. By repeating "red coat" so many times, the media plants a memory flag to the public. They know the Netflix documentary will come out eventually and they want people to remember which event it was from. It's possible that some people were not aware that they were being filmed for Netflix documentary and there will be some kind of surprise twist or change in narrative. So the media is making sure that people will remember the context in which they made this visit to NYC.

It's standard procedure for everyone involved in high profile televised public events to sign a release form, so many of those will have given their permission on paper. However it can be worded in a such a way that they have no way of knowing if the footage will only appear on TV that same evening, on social media for the Archewell foundation or immortalised forever on Netflix.

There you go again, that’s twice you’ve told women to calm down. You really have got it all.

I have no idea if you’re all women or not 🤷🏼‍♀️

I just think you’re being needlessly angry and defensive about anyone saying anything about how Meghan looks yet ignoring comments about Kate being too thin or having bad skin

Meghan wouldn’t care, like I said she’s a tough cookie and has made her money partly through her looks and fashion choices. I’m sure she’s been told as much by casting agents etc.

Don’t try and make out this is a picking-on-women thing because there have been lots of articles about Harry losing his hair, Prince Charles looking ill, William going bald etc.

It's also possible that the media were not allowed to mention the fact that parts of the trip were being filmed for Netflix hence why they're coming up with the alternative story. It seems more likely about exposing their double standards rather than weight bashing.

It also seems a bit passé to be insulting a woman on baby weight in 2021 since it's become politically incorrect to mock people's appearance online for quite some time now. Which means that most readers will not jump on the bandwagon of thinking "Oh she took off the coat, she looks awful" but they will most likely admire her for not trying to lose that weight.

They have mentioned that Harry had a microphone pack and that they were filming for their Netflix show, so I don't know why the press has been pricing up every outfit she wears and mentioning the coat. Probably just the tabloids being twats as always.

I’d have reported those comments about Kate if I saw them. I don’t dislike Kate or Meghan and would certainly defend them from comments about their looks, as I would anyone. I reported the whole thread some time ago now but clearly mumsnet thinks this sort of thing is ‘in the spirit’. Hmm

You don’t know that Meghan wouldn’t care. And as for their being articles on Harry, William Charles and their looks, there’s nowhere near as many. And certainly nowhere near the number of threads on here picking on Meghan.

SomewhereInBrooklyn · 26/09/2021 15:39

there

SnottyLottie · 26/09/2021 15:40

I don’t think any of the British royals do formal dressing very well except maybe at white tie events.

Meghan looks good in smart casual and ‘work wear’ (she looked amazing in that green pencil skirt). Kate looks good in her casual off duty dresses and jeans. I think outfits look a little more put together when they’re tailored and form fitting but I imagine oversized/relaxed is more comfortable and helps hide the pounds when you’re not feeling your best.

Side note: but did Meghan ever get to do a really formal white tie event with ball gown and tiara?

I think reporting threads and comments for being what you consider ‘mean’, especially if they’re about someone who has chosen to be in the public eye, is extremely controlling. Why not just hide the thread? It’s like you’re addicted to being outraged.
SomewhereInBrooklyn · 26/09/2021 15:46

Outraged...lol. Mumsnet apparently doesn’t tolerate personal attacks. I’d say that saying negative things about someone’s body is a personal attack. They’ve deleted similar threads about Victoria Beckham for example.
Whatever, I can’t be bothered. Go and argue with yourself. You’re not someone I’d want to be around in real life so you’re certainly someone I will ignore from now on on here. 👋

@pastabest

I've noticed there's been lots of fluffy DM articles about Lady Louise recently as well and I've been wondering what's been going on there too.
She's 18 soon which means the agreement to not print too many stories about her will fall by the wayside.

With Beatrice and Eugenie settling down with families the media need new "look at this royal falling out of a nightclub/having a boyfriend/going to university/having a holiday" fodder.

Plus with Louise's position of being titled, but not using it they can use her to have a pop at Harry and Meghan, and with her carriage driving they can bring up Prince Philip and use it as a chance to comment on his close friendship with his carriage driving partner.

Taiyo · 26/09/2021 16:14

I remember Meghan's wedding dress wasn't a great fit. I think she was nervous and made some last minute changes. Her going-away dress was stunning though.

I think this shift dress wasn't very flattering. I don't think Meghan has gained weight. She is really slim, just the dress is gaping around the waist a bit.

TooBigForMyBoots · 26/09/2021 16:19

The problem here is not an attention seeking woman, it's the press who will turn her into a story no matter what she wears, says or does.

I loved her wedding dress and she looked gorgeous in it plus that veil which went on forever, beautiful. The going away dress was perfect too.

I just looked at a picture of her in the little white dress she wore of an evening in New York, it looks pretty. Yes it isn't fitted around the waist but she only had a baby in June! Not everyone goes straight back to how they were within three months.

And what happens if the press loose interest in her (and Harry)?

Also, there's nothing really negative, who really cares if she's gained weight, wearing warm clothes in hot weather...? It's keeping them in the limelight, keeping people talking, all important for them, and Netflix.

Harry's hairline was trending the other day fgs!

SnottyLottie · 26/09/2021 17:20

I also thought that her wedding dress looked a bit baggy and ill fitting around the arms, shoulders and waist. But I read somewhere that it was purposely designed to be like that due to the stiff, heavy fabric (she wouldn’t have been able to sit down in the wedding car if it had been tight) and the fact that she was going for a more modern, relaxed look. Which does seem to be her style. Her reception dress seemed to be quite a relaxed fit too although it wasn’t as noticeable due to the silhouette. I loved her reception dress 🥰

Given I've said in a post ABOVE your twitter conspiracy crap what do you reckon?

TooBigForMyBoots · 26/09/2021 17:37

Who cares what happens to them if the press lose interest?🤷‍♀️ However they won't as H&M are a license for them to print money. So many haters click on the stories, even the ones that are total non stories, like Woman wears coat and follow up shocker Woman takes off coat.

SleepingStandingUp · 26/09/2021 17:52

Here you go Mail, I've written it for you:
"Mystery deepens around circumstances of Lilibet's birth"
"Palace to request original birth record"
"Palace insiders 'concerned' at reports"
"Palace to investigate implications around succession"

@Teapiggies you missed out the DNA test cos they had a surrogate to make sure he'd the father AND the rumours that the first surrogate fell through (changed her mind) so they had to quickly source a late term pregnancy hence not being his child 🤣🤣🤣

Waits while someone trawls the internet to find a picture of Di dressed in high fashion at a similar event.
Or a photo of Diana in a red outfit to show how she's just copying Diana and is awful vs showing Kate wearing something like Diana because she's doing it to honour her
