All petrol stations near me now out of diesel

Hope you’re all looking forward to homeschooling again with your full to them being tanks of diesel cars on the drive. How many people really needed a full tank ?

I just despair of how pathetic this country is

Maybe they need to get to work too? Probably end up with key workers being prioritized if it isn't sorted soon.

ThePlantsitter · 25/09/2021 10:56

Stop blaming other people. This is the government's fault. Theirs, and only theirs. They have created a country wide feeling of anxiety about everything. They have insisted people should attend offices. They have caused a petrol shortage so that people can't easily attend offices. It's a perfect storm. I'm sick of people turning on each other; they are just trying to protect themselves and their families. This instinct is why government was invented in the first place.

(By the way, not that it matters but I haven't bought any petrol. I don't need to.)

AtomicBlondeRose · 25/09/2021 10:58

It’s not irrational behaviour to want to secure your own petrol supply when you can see with your own eyes that it’s running short locally - regardless of whether there’s a real national shortage, people’s own short-term circumstances are very important to them and it’s understandable to act to protect them!

I didn’t fill up yesterday and won’t today but I can completely sympathise with anyone who does.

DebbieHarrysCheekbones · 25/09/2021 11:01

Nobody needs a full tank of fuel to drive to work generally

Nobody feels more or less secure with a full tank of fuel especially when nurses, shop staff, police, teachers etc can’t get to work what will happen then?

Someone voted this shower of shit in didn’t they?

I do blame the government. If you can call them that but what happened to common sense and trying to remain calm?

The supermarkets were saying yesterday no problem but overnight this happens.

LadyCatStark · 25/09/2021 11:05

I filled up my tank yesterday and here’s why:

  1. my fuel light was on so the rest is a moot point.
  2. I live in the middle of nowhere and won’t be near a petrol station for the rest of the weekend.
  3. next week I am finally being allowed back out to work to actually support my families who have children from 0-3 with SEND. This involves driving to their homes to do a session with the parent and child. My parents have had no support from anyone except crappy video calls from me for 18 months. Some of them were actually born in lockdown. This time of their lives is absolutely crucial and nothing will stop me getting out to them next week. Especially if there’s more restrictions/ work from home orders over winter. At least I’ll be able to give them something before it all goes to shot again. So no, none of the petrol I put in yesterday is “for” me and tea, I will use a full tank next week.
ThePlantsitter · 25/09/2021 11:06

You don't know people are filling up. You don't know they don't need a full tank. I don't know what 'nobody feels more or less secure with a full tank of fuel' means. You don't know the fillers up are not nurses, shop staff, police.

Sure, people voted for this government and I don't claim to understand that because I bloody didn't, but coddling a hatred of an amorphous group of 'idiots' is neither useful nor, actually, good for you.

TheFairyCaravan · 25/09/2021 11:07

That’s absolutely no true. Before DH changed jobs he was driving 500+miles a week. We live rurally, he’d leave at 6am and not be back till gone 7pm so the last thing he’d have wanted to do was queue up for fuel of an evening so used to fill up on a weekend. Currently both our cars are 3/4 full which is enough to get him to work and back for the next two weeks.

I don’t disagree that people are being utterly stupid and selfish, though. They don’t give two hoots about the nurses, doctors, paramedics, social Carers, fire fighters etc nor the ambulances, police cars or fire engines that all need filling.

Mantlemoose · 25/09/2021 11:08

I blame the stupid greedy braindead humans.

I don’t hate them I think it’s stupid and Unnecessary for a large number of these people it is. As it was last time remember They will not all be in desperate need of full tanks

I agree OP. It's funny how this weekend everybody has suddenly "run out" of fuel. As far as I recall there were no long queues last week, the week before or...well any when really. What an amazing coincidence that on the same weekend the media published a story about 3 garages having to close, half the population all had to fill up at the exact same weekend.

Mummyratbag · 25/09/2021 11:15

Speak to anyone and their reasons for getting petrol are valid, whilst everyone else is a sheep...

I didnt fill up but that is because my tank is over half full, maybe if it was low I would feel different and be panicking.

We have had low supplies in the SW for weeks, no one was panicking until the untrustworthy government said "it's fine" and everyone though "uh-oh".

DominicRaabsTravelAgent · 25/09/2021 11:18

If you're a key worker, you get priority. I've had a letter of priority in the part though fortunately, it never got to the stage where I had to use it.

DominicRaabsTravelAgent · 25/09/2021 11:19

*past

gogohm · 25/09/2021 11:21

I filled up Thursday (before the "crisis" was announced) I always fill up (then run to empty) so my normal pattern. I had the university drop to do Friday and I'm sure this is the case with hundreds of thousands at the moment. Don't make assumptions.

I also need fuel for work so I will need to fuel by midweek, I'm classified as a keyworker btw and there is zero public transport options and too dangerous to cycle so no choice but drive

Difford · 25/09/2021 11:26

I'm a bit disappointed that this thread isn't about actual sheep causing chaos tbh. Clicked on it thinking there was some sort of farmaggedon going on.

walksen · 25/09/2021 11:27

I usually fill up after shopping trip but it was mad yesterday and my usual spot was out of diesel. I left it as I still have half a tank so will be ok for this week but then if I leave it a week is there any guarantee things will improve next when I need to fill up for the week after?

If I go queue up for a few hours and top up on Sunday, am I panic buying then? People's routines are disrupted. I don't normally make a trip solely for fuel but now I'll probably have to.

"If you're a key worker, you get priority. I've had a letter of priority in the part though fortunately, it never got to the stage where I had to use it".

I've yet to see petrol stations giving priority to key workers. Is this even a thing?

BitterTits · 25/09/2021 11:28

I'm not filling up today because I wouldn't normally, I have 3 working days' fuel (just over half a tank) and we've been told not to panic buy. However if I can't buy fuel on Wednesday afternoon and can't get to work on Thursday, that will be my fault too. You can't win.

Marmight · 25/09/2021 11:30

This was a political move by BP to force the issue about the visas.

When they announced that some petrol stations had closed, it was a handful of their total number.

They knew what would happen and that the media would report it causing the panic buying. Its becomes a vicious circle as this encourages other to panic buy.

There is also a global shortage of HGV drivers, including the US, Europe (300k) and even Australia so it's not unique to the UK.

Sorry Grin I did love farmaggedon so know the disappointment is real

Although perhaps at some point sheep might be purloined to literally serve as the metaphor in this context outside a forecourt ?

Or a huge convoy of sheep pulling a car that has run out of fuel !

OP posts:
MissCruellaDeVil · 25/09/2021 11:36

The problem isn't a petrol shortage, or even a driver shortage, it's everyone rushing to fill up at once!

MissCruellaDeVil · 25/09/2021 11:38

Oh to add, I now have a useless car because all the selfish dicks have ran all the pumps dry within a 15 mile radius. That means I can't get to work on Monday, nor can I take the DC to school. I can use DH's car, but he will need it for work too.

Porfre · 25/09/2021 11:41

Everything is fine where I live.

No queues. No petrol shortages. No gridlocked traffic. Northwest

Ughmaybenot · 25/09/2021 11:42

The worst part about this for me, honestly, is the fact people have started on the bollocks about being a key worker again. That had almost died a death and I was not sorry to see it go Grin
It’s frustrating for sure. I filled up yesterday because my truck was on the red light and I’m not ever in the habit of half filling my tank. I live very rurally, and fuel station hours are relatively short at the best of times.
I did roll my eyes at the amount of people filling their car up, then filling multiple cans up. And yes, I’m sure some would normally fill a can with their usual fuel station stop, handy for strimmers etc, but most were doing it because they’re panic buying 🤦🏼‍♀️
