The sheep are causing chaos

All petrol stations near me now out of diesel

Hope you’re all looking forward to homeschooling again with your full to them being tanks of diesel cars on the drive. How many people really needed a full tank ?

I just despair of how pathetic this country is

@tigger1001

Trust me plenty of people will be exasperated that they can’t get to work or try to get kids to school because fuel was being used to have a day trip to the seaside or because instead of spending day £20 a week on fuel which is what I do I bought £70 when I knew I didn’t need it and there would be consequences

People after all are selfish
This thread has shown that

Why else are key workers supposed to get priority?

Lansonmaid · 25/09/2021 12:59

I saw that some companies are imposing a max spend of £30 which should stop the jerry can fillers

tigger1001 · 25/09/2021 12:59
@tigger1001 - this is normal buying - which we are being urged to do. Carry on as normal as there is apparently enough
I agree, it's normal buying, but some of the comments on here would suggest I should wait until Tuesday as I don't "need" it tomorrow.

Hadenoughofbloodycovid · 25/09/2021 13:00

No queues or panic buying where I am, central Scotland.

DebbieHarrysCheekbones · 25/09/2021 13:01

@Profilejacket

I filled up this morning because I’d got to less than a quarter of a tank and have a couple of long drives in the next few days.

I filled up completely because that’s what I normally do-unless I’m short of money which I’m not because I’ve just been paid.

Why should I modify my normal buying when apparently there isn’t a shortage?

Erm you’ve just asked why modify normal buying Nobody is asking you to It’s the people who are buying way more than they usually do or need

I'm a bit disappointed that this thread isn't about actual sheep causing chaos tbh. Clicked on it thinking there was some sort of farmaggedon going on.

Me too. I wanted to know what sort if chaos sheep were causing.
Instead it was another boring petrol station one!

FreeBritnee · 25/09/2021 13:03

@trappedsincesundaymorn

I agree OP. It's funny how this weekend everybody has suddenly "run out" of fuel. As far as I recall there were no long queues last week, the week before or...well any when really. What an amazing coincidence that on the same weekend the media published a story about 3 garages having to close, half the population all had to fill up at the exact same weekend.
You conspiracy theorist you!!!! Off to the Gulag immediately.

I don't spend £20 per week on fuel - generally I fill up on pay day to the top, then put more in if needed, to last until end of the month. It's easier for me to budget that way. If I was to only put £20 in each time I would be at the fuel station twice a week.

Trips out, dropping kids at uni, doing runs to kids hobbies, all normal expenditure on fuel.

For me, £20 would sometimes be 3 maybe 4 days driving. I live rurally, so not always a fuel station close by that's open. When I leave for work, the closest fuel station is 15 miles away, as the local one opens after I leave.

£20 this week would see me through until pay day.

Good to hear as that's where I am too. My local garage has sold out. But it's a small independent and running out of fuel isn't an unusual occurrence.

Am hoping when out in town tomorrow there will be plenty

Porfre · 25/09/2021 13:10

@puppyknowsbest

It's perfectly logical to ensure you have a fullish tank if there is a danger of shortages. I wouldn't trust anything this government says, so I feel zero guilt about making sure our two cars have plenty of fuel.
Agree.

Its the government who has caused this

bigbluebus · 25/09/2021 13:12

@ArcheryAnnie

Might it help if there was a ban on filling jerrycans?
Did anyone see that the BBC reporter sent to cover the fuel story from Stockport this morning was called Phil McCann? 😁
mpsw · 25/09/2021 13:14

I've yet to see petrol stations giving priority to key workers. Is this even a thing?

It was a thing in 2000 during the tanker drivers strike.

Those petrol stations which were open (supplies driven in by the military) had police or military checking who you were and why you wanted fuel and only letting certain categories in to buy.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 25/09/2021 13:16

I'm pretty sure one of the front pages said the Government told us not to panic buy...which with BoJo and this shower of shite in charge is guaranteed to cause panic buying. 🤦‍♀️

Tiredmum100 · 25/09/2021 13:16

I do need a full tank. I'm a district nurse so I really do need a full tank to see to my patients. I usually fill up up on a Sunday. Luckily dh was out collecting tiles this morning and filled up for me as tesco was apparently quiet.

DebbieHarrysCheekbones · 25/09/2021 13:18

^yup. My colleagues at the time had to prove they were on 24hr call out, there was even a phonecall from the police to check they were legit. Luckily one colleague had a brother that worked at a fuel depot and he was happy to swap cars every day to fill each car to the brim.
yodaforpresident · 25/09/2021 13:22

My car takes 80l to fill so depending on where I fill up it could cost £120, usually £110 though. I always fill it up fully as I don’t see the point in making lots of small trips to the petrol station. We live rurally so that will only last me about two weeks maximum anyway.

poshme · 25/09/2021 13:23

It's funny that there's suddenly a run on fuel just after they changed to E10 which some people were concerned about.
Now everyone just want any fuel- whatever they can get.

Convenient.

mpsw · 25/09/2021 13:26

Erm you’ve just asked why modify normal buying

Exactly - we don't usually see huge weekend queues at just about every petrol station there is. So there has to be a lot of people who aren't just doing their normal buying.

I'd restrict jerry can sales to one small can, sufficient to get a car that's run out moving again so it can be driven to a petrol station.

It's a hazard to store petrol domestically, and a very bad idea in a house or attached garage

LadyWithLapdog · 25/09/2021 13:33

So trips to the seaside are now selfish? Is it just heads down and work, you peasants, none of these fancy treats. I’ve heard it all.

Tangledtresses · 25/09/2021 13:37

I live opposite a petrol station and it's been absolutely stupid with queues of cars causing absolute mayhem all day and night.

It's empty now as there is no petrol left

At least the roads are now quiet
My car is on red but I don't really need it this week.. so didn't bother filling up

Sarahlou63 · 25/09/2021 13:37

The incompetence of the national and local government in the UK continues to stagger me. How hard would in be to designate one fuel station in every town as restricted to emergency and delivery vehicles?

Listening to the radio this morning - ambulances having to queue for fuel. FFS.

Typical snarky comeback when you know full well I mean that if needs Must sometimes we have to think about things

If it comes to the point where people can’t get to work, hospitals are even more badly hit , public transport cannot cope and schools are so short staffed they can’t run then I think some level of scrutiny and self awareness is required

I'm honestly beyond it all now. There will be shortages of lots of things, including fuel for a long time because of brexit. The driver shortages are on top of that and another consequence of brexit....European drivers masked the lack of our own for a long time. It's all in the government's own emergency planning documents which I spent a lot of time looking at last year because I work for an emergency service. I spent a lot of time arguing with brexiteers last year about it to be told it would be fine, there'd be some bumps in the road but worth it in the end. So let's see. I hope they are all conserving fuel and checking bus timetables/walking routes as part of this great national effort that will be worth it in the end. And not stressing about fuel shortages because any disruption to their life is unwelcome. I feel quite fatalistic...but then I was mentally prepared for this.
