All petrol stations near me now out of diesel

Hope you’re all looking forward to homeschooling again with your full to them being tanks of diesel cars on the drive. How many people really needed a full tank ?

I just despair of how pathetic this country is

We will fill up in the week as we are going on holiday in Cornwall next weekend, we will need a full tank, if we don't find any we will just change our holiday dates a bit. Hopefully we will find some diesel in the week but I can't really get worked up about it.

MrsDThomas · 25/09/2021 15:54

MrsDThomas
I have a full tank
@DebbieHarrysCheekbones*. I need the fuel to drive to work. Like everyone else.

And tbh i dont care if you’re pissed off. I doubt very much that you're more important than the next person.
Quite obvious many people are like you and don’t care
Im not more important
If I was I would have sat like half the customers yesterday and bought fuck tonnes of fuel just in case
I didn’t

Anyway aren’t loads of people still wfh ?*

Yes there are. Your point being?

BarbaraofSeville · 25/09/2021 17:33

@LadyWithLapdog

So trips to the seaside are now selfish? Is it just heads down and work, you peasants, none of these fancy treats. I’ve heard it all.
If there was a genuine fuel shortage then leisure travel will need to be restricted. You'd be daft to use the fuel you had to go to the seaside and then not have enough to get to work in the week.

Maybe as well as banning jerry cans unless people had actually run out on the road somewhere, and then they could fill one, if they'd walked in with it, they should have turned away anyone with more than a quarter of a tank already and then let everyone else have £20 worth?

Would have put off the panic buyers, so reduced the queues and given everyone who needed some right now some fuel for a few days in most cases.

mpsw · 25/09/2021 17:39

What don't understand is why a shortage of drivers isn't being patched by using the military eg the RLC has loads of HGV delivers, many qualified for hazardous loads and experienced with fuel transportation.

They've managed to deploy a different bit of the military - experienced ambulance drivers - to Scotland. They use Green Goddesses during firefighters' industrial action. They used military tanker drivers during the 2000 strike.

So why not now?
Incompetence?

Why are they going out and buying excessive amounts of fuel

Pretty relevant and obvious point to make
Especially given your lamenting about needing to have fuel to drive to ….oh wait for it ….. work

MrsDThomas · 25/09/2021 18:02

Not everyone id working from home. Nor CAN work from home.

Who do people leave their tanks to run down to near empty to fill up if they need rely on it? Keep it at a certain point and it’s easily avoided.

RoseAndRose · 25/09/2021 18:24

Not everyone id working from home. Nor CAN work from home

Very true.

But pandemic experience does mean that we are considerably better at it than we were 18 months ago

InFiveMins · 25/09/2021 18:32

This country is embarrassing.

Leaving essential workers without fuel to be able to get to their jobs is shameful. Anyone who has rushed to get fuel they genuinely don't need should hang their heads in shame.

DerAlteMann · 25/09/2021 18:43

@DebbieHarrysCheekbones

Nobody needs a full tank of fuel to drive to work generally

Nobody feels more or less secure with a full tank of fuel especially when nurses, shop staff, police, teachers etc can’t get to work what will happen then?

Someone voted this shower of shit in didn’t they?

Nobody needs a full tank of fuel to drive to work generally

If they're only going in one day a week - possibly. Otherwise, no.

Say one thing about this "shower of shit", they don't go around calling people whose votes they will need in 2024 (or maybe sooner) names.

DebbieHarrysCheekbones · 25/09/2021 18:56

@DerAlteMann

The hallmark of the said shower of shit is that they hold most people - apart form Surrey pensioners and stockbrokers etc - in such contempt it’s gone way beyond even summoning up calling the rest of their supporters names.
Squeezing them dry and simultaneously appeasing them by trashing the even worse off in some way than themselves is far more effective.
Besides which it’s far too obvious

BJ has said some pretty offensive things about Muslims and black people, hasn't he? Although I suppose that was before he wanted their votes.

LizzieMacQueen · 25/09/2021 19:26

There'll be loads and loads of car loads up & own the country dropping kids off to uni. This weekend & next. So of course they need a full tank.

Yes, it's quite crappy timing for many families with university age DC

But if they can get through this week, they won't need another big fill-up, just back to their background level

AngelDelight28 · 25/09/2021 21:42

We filled up, I'm not sorry. We'll also be stocking up the freezer and cupboards. We live rurally with a toddler, there are no shops within walking distance other than a tiny corner shop and the bus takes an hour to get into the nearest town.
In 2020 we laughed at people stockpiling, didn't do so ourselves and then ended up locked down with a newborn and struggling to buy formula, nappies, toilet paper and a bunch of other supplies. It was so stressful, I never want to go through it again.
Yes, rationally I know that if no one stockpiled there wouldn't be shortages, but people do stockpile and I can't do anything about that, so we need to look after ourselves. I don't blame people for being anxious.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/09/2021 22:19

If you live rurally you should keep a store cupboard of essentials as a matter of routine if you can.

It's not just global pandemics, Brexit fallout and panic buying by others that can cause you to not be able to shop or order in as usual. Weather, illness etc could also get in the way.

Aim to keep 2 to 4 weeks of spares of essentials, use from your stocks and buy to keep your store cupboard topped up.

Then if there's any issues, you don't need to go anything or buy anything in the short term.

We managed to avoid the shops completely during the worst of the shortages and queues last spring, apart from bread and milk from the co-op. Everything else we just used what we had.

MrsDThomas · 26/09/2021 06:19

@BarbaraofSeville im always stocked up on food etc. I have 2 fridge freezers And one chest Freezer and they are full. Living rurally its like a law. I also meal prep and freeze simple meals like lasagne/chilli/soups. Ihave 5-6 bottles of shampoo/conditioner/shower gels in store too.

City folks moving to rural areas should think of this.

Brahumbug · 26/09/2021 06:49

They have got the spending limit at garages the wrong way round, to stop panic bug they should have a minimum spend of say £30 or £40 to stop people topping up constantly which is exacerbating the problem. Storing more than 10 litres of fuel is illegal on domestic premises and the filling of Jerry cabs could be temporarily banned.

SoloISland · 26/09/2021 06:59

Sweet relief..
I had just been reading about the wild boar crisis in Rome...

Sheeple people.. Need a good shepherd. Need THE Good Shepherd.

Need to follow the shepherd they have else they risk running off cliffs.

As in panic buying.

RedRiverShore · 26/09/2021 07:00

Another who has their facts wrong, why post incorrect stuff on here, it's 30 litres, we store petrol at home in our outbuilding for DH's boat. The container can't be more than 10 litres but you can have more than one, stop posting incorrect crap.

Brahumbug · 26/09/2021 07:08

"Sheep are causing chaos."
I was hoping it was something vaguely to do with the Llandudno goats invading the town again 😁

MzHz · 26/09/2021 07:59

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

How big is a tank that takes £120 of fuel? Unless its an actual tank... (Our LR Discovery costs £60 to fully fill)
Depends where you live

Filling your disco would cost more in some places than others (and that’s another bugbear..)

Your tank is at least as large as an X5 BMW I’d imagine- H spends over £80 filling his

(Last week, no panic buying at all…) Grin

That wouldn't help as what about these who are only putting in £20 as that's all they can afford and they need that fuel to get to work?

That's what I will be doing - just enough to tide me over until payday. But without that, I won't be able to get to work.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/09/2021 08:13

I find that hard to believe that a Discovery can be filled for £60 today.

I paid nearly £50 to fill the 35 litre tank in my Skoda Citigo with the cheapest petrol in the area (126.9/litre) a few days ago.

A discovery will be usually diesel, which is more per litre, with a bigger tank. Plus if you go somewhere other than a supermarket, you're paying nearly 1.40 per litre, so I'd agree that you're looking at well over £80 to fill a large 4X4.

But I too thought that this was the Llandudno goats again or a similar occurrence.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/09/2021 08:15

I don't own a car. Feeling pretty smug right now. Grin (Light hearted!)

BarbaraofSeville · 26/09/2021 08:18

It's alright Wax, they're cutting down bus services in many areas due to a shortage of drivers.

You can't get some bike components for love nor money.

There could be a shortage of comfortable walking shoes for all I know, so you're inconvenienced whatever your chosen mode of transport is.

You're not even safe if you stay at home, half the TV network went off last night for some reason and there's about a million of us who currently don't have a utilities supplier. We're all doomed, I tell you.
