Have you bought petrol today when you wouldn't normally have?

The BP petrol station here is closed and every other garage has queues on to the road.

I'll admit I did think I'd get petrol when I was out today. I have half a tank and I do generally keep it topped up for emergencies, although I would probably have left it until next week to fill up normally.

In the event, I didn't bother queuing but I'm guessing most of the people "panicking' are just filling up a few days earlier than they usually would. After all, a tank only holds so much, it's not as if you can buy a year's supply like toilet rolls

No - I ran out yesterday and filled up then.

Sparklfairy · 24/09/2021 14:29

The queues perpetuate more panic buying, its a vicious cycle. I don't drive but DM saw the queues earlier and is talking about "topping up" even though she has half a tank and doesn't do much mileage.

I just hope we don't sink to the levels of the US recently when people were filling all manner of dangerous containers before prices went up Confused

HasaDigaEebowai · 24/09/2021 14:29

I’m low so tried to top up. The village petrol station is empty. Tesco in the next town had a queue onto the main road which wasn’t going down

PurpleDaisies · 24/09/2021 14:30

I bought petrol because I was running on fumes. It was chaos.

Brownsnail · 24/09/2021 14:32

No, I topped up yesterday morning as my tank was down to half, and it doesn't cost any more to put half a tankful in when it's half full as when it's empty. And if I hadn't, I wouldn't have gone today because I could have relied on my half full tank till this blows over.

dontgobaconmyheart · 24/09/2021 14:32

Not personally. DP did this morning when he may not normally have made a point of it at 5am specifically (which is when he leaves for work) but he drives a 200 mile round trip daily and so can't risk running out on the way home etc what with the queues and closures.

Wouldn't dream of filling canisters and the like though and wont be making any extra attempts over the weekend until he needs to refuel for next week, which he'll attempt on the day.

Queues for petrol have caused a lot of traffic locally today, such a shame.

TammyTwoSwanson · 24/09/2021 14:33

Yes, I normally get it on pay day which is on Monday, but I thought I'd better get it today because petrol stations are closing all over the place, I've got 40 miles left in the tank and DC to drive to school 10 miles away each next week. I had to queue to get it too, which I've never had to do before.

desperatehousewife21 · 24/09/2021 14:34

No I filled up on Tue with my normal amount £25 which lasts a week. I won’t be adding to panic buying and think everyone that’s queuing to get in if they already have enough is ridiculous

ufucoffee · 24/09/2021 14:35

No

Mybalconyiscracking · 24/09/2021 14:35

People are morons!
These are the true “sheeple” !

TheFlis12345 · 24/09/2021 14:41

We did but only because we are on holiday 250 miles from home and need to drive back tomorrow! We spoke to a guy who was delivering fuel to the garage while we were there and he said there is absolutely no shortage but that he was doing his second delivery of the day there as it had been so manic! We had to queue for about 5 minutes so not too bad.

WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy · 24/09/2021 14:41

I’m on the red so really need to fill up today, wishing I hadn’t left it so late if I’m just going to have to sit in a bloody queue for ages. Might send DH later this evening.

Spiindoctor · 24/09/2021 14:42

No

StrangeAddiction · 24/09/2021 14:44

I use £30pw and need to get some either today or tomorrow. The thought of queuing makes me think I should get it tomorrow when I'm out at 6am but will I be too late by then or will I still have to que at 6am on a Saturday?!

User5827372728 · 24/09/2021 14:44

I luckily filled my tank on Monday and it will last me 5 weeks!!

inigomontoyahwillcox · 24/09/2021 14:44

Currently sitting in the queue waiting as I type. Am running on fumes, the gauge says zero miles left (was just trying to work out if I could roll the car to the pump if I ran out in the queue).

There's probably about 40 cars behind me (only 2 in front - thank god).

Babababababybelll · 24/09/2021 14:45

No , but im on about quater of a tank. I am wondering if i should make the trip - what if i cant get any next week ?

However, hubby put a full tank in his this week , so its not like we would be completely stuck in case of emergency

custardbear · 24/09/2021 14:45

I've got just a shade less than a quarter tank so thought I'd top up to about 3/4 - I'd normally go within the next few days but wouldn't be in a hurry IYSWIM, but as I was going to asda thought I'd kill two birds - well the queue was huge! So didn't bother! I don't drive that far so that quarter tank would last me another week at least, there are others who need it more than me for work etc

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 24/09/2021 14:45

Nope. I fill up when I get to half full, and that’s not going to be for a few weeks yet.

TokyoSushi · 24/09/2021 14:46

The other way for me, I usually top up about £15 on a Friday, but haven't done so today. I have 1/4 of a tank, but WFH and only do very local mileage for the most part, so left it for now.

yellowgingham · 24/09/2021 14:46

I wasn't planning to but have to admit I'm getting nervous now seeing the queues, petrol stations closing etc.

I didn't ever buy more than I needed during the covid lockdowns (despite having a young baby) and there are no medals for taking the moral high ground. Kind of had enough now of trying to do the right thing whilst others are selfish.

Porfre · 24/09/2021 14:48

Yup.
I had a quarter of a tank. I should go but normally I wait til the light has come on, after I keep driving for a couple of days it starts flashing and the fuel gauge goes blank so indont know how much is left.
I usually go after the fuel light coming on and maybe before it goes blank. Today I went when I had just under a 1/4 tank

GreatPotato · 24/09/2021 14:49

I can understand, with garages closing, that people are worried they won't be able to get to work next week. I don't think that makes them sheeple.

OP posts:
Tangledtresses · 24/09/2021 14:50

No I haven't as I filled up a week ago
I don't drive much and haven't planned any long journeys.

I live opposite a garage and it's heaving
But it will be empty by 8pm

621CustardCream438 · 24/09/2021 14:51

No, I’ve got a shade over half a tank and probably only need to do twenty miles in the next week or so. According to local FB every station within fifteen miles is dry by now anyway so couldn’t if I wanted to.

It’ll calm down in a bit, most people can’t stockpile too much so although I think there’ll be odd closures of particular stations I think overall it’ll be ok.

And if it isn’t, the fact my children’s teachers can’t get to work, NHS staff can’t work, bus drivers can’t work, deliveries can’t be made etc etc is all much more of a problem than me running out of petrol myself!
