Have you bought petrol today when you wouldn't normally have?

The BP petrol station here is closed and every other garage has queues on to the road.

I'll admit I did think I'd get petrol when I was out today. I have half a tank and I do generally keep it topped up for emergencies, although I would probably have left it until next week to fill up normally.

In the event, I didn't bother queuing but I'm guessing most of the people "panicking' are just filling up a few days earlier than they usually would. After all, a tank only holds so much, it's not as if you can buy a year's supply like toilet rolls

No. I was waiting til today as it's our pay day and I was v.low. I can only go to Tesco as I need a pay at pump with having a baby in the car and it was busy at 11am!

I did however get a full tank when normally I'd do about half. I live far from amenities and need a car!

middleager · 24/09/2021 15:59

Asked DH to fill up as driving DS1 to school and back twice daily is 40 miles a day.

Mogloveseggs · 24/09/2021 15:59

Yes. I normally fill up on a Sunday after work but did it today just in case. I only had enough to get to work Sunday not home so it needed doing to be sure I could get home!

Sadless · 24/09/2021 15:59

I usual put £30 every Friday morning after shopping. I did put another £15 in but at least I have nearly a full tank and I am going to try make it last 2 weeks before I put any in.

Dh is fuming he promised to drive DS and his DP to Gatwick in the early hours of tomorrow morning he planned to get sufficient fuel for the trip today.
Nowhere local has any fuel left or the queues are out as far as the M25, and they cannot do the trip on public transport

mumjustmum · 24/09/2021 16:00

No, but we have agreed to limit trips out when we would need the car until this petrol panic is over.
My husband starts a new job next week so will need the car and preserve petrol for that.

MargosKaftan · 24/09/2021 16:00

I bought petrol today, but it was because the reserve fuel level light was on. I do need petrol for Sunday, and if it wasn't for the nonsense, I think id just have taken dc2 to their club tomorrow morning in the car and swung into the petrol station on the way (rather than walk) or gone on the way to family on Sunday, however, I did think what if there's a big queue tomorrow when I have to wait with the dcs or if there's no petrol on Sunday/long queue again. Figured this afternoon after work before pick up was when I had an hour to spare to queue if need be.

Had to only wait 5 mins, but had to go to a slightly further away petrol station as our nearest had a massive queue. The one I went to had no diesel.

Suzi888 · 24/09/2021 16:00

No I haven’t. Not sure how much is in there either Grinit’ll be a surprise for me tomorrow lol

Stoic123 · 24/09/2021 16:01

Nearly out of petrol and would normally have filled up today but thought I would leave in case queues.

I am lucky that I can manage without the car to shop/get to work - would have gone if dependent on it.

Clymene · 24/09/2021 16:01

No I didn't because I have half a tank which will last me until the panic buyers are long gone.

If people were filling up as normal, there wouldn't be an issue. And now vulnerable people will be at risk because their carers like @MockneyReject won't be able to get to them.

vera99 · 24/09/2021 16:01

Was down to 1/4 tank so queued 20 minutes this morning at a Shell. Lots of white man vans were there some with huge jerry cans that they were filling to the brim. The flatbed garden maintenance truck next to may had a £170 bill ! I suspect the business owners know if they run out it's their business screwed so they were going the extra mile.

Unfashionable · 24/09/2021 16:01

sheeple morons idiots

It’s entirely rational for people who are completely dependent on their cars to fill up if supplies are threatened. This is not the same as bulk-buying several months’ supply of pasta or loo roll. My car only holds a week’s worth of fuel. Unfortunately, problems happen when lots of other people in the same position also behave rationally....

MrsMcCluskeysCat · 24/09/2021 16:01

I went out at lunchtime to get some and everywhere was closed, I've got 15 miles left and a 90 mile journey home to do tomorrow...

TheatricalGiraffe · 24/09/2021 16:01

I filled up yesterday.. I had 100 miles still in the tank so just under half full BUT my boyfriend has gone for a stag weekend 300 miles away so it needed filling anyway (we always fill before a long journey) Had he not been going we wouldn't have filled it. He'll probably fill it on the way back somewhere

That said the petrol station was virtually deserted.. It was a supermarket one and aside from one pump being closed the rest was all open and operating normally with no queues.

Williamshatnershorses · 24/09/2021 16:02

I did, it was fine - marginally busier than normal but not queued out onto the road or anything.

Vargas · 24/09/2021 16:02

Had less than half a tank and need to drive 6 hours tomorrow to take ds to Uni, luckily managed to get petrol nearby with just a short queue. I'm hoping there is still some petrol in the north of England or we won't make it back!

PhoboPhobia · 24/09/2021 16:04

We would normally have filled up tomorrow (quarter of a tank) but we will be leaving it for a few days. We are lucky enough that we can manage without using the car much over the weekend and we have enough for probably a week's worth of work trips for DH. Not everyone is able to do that.

My SIL is really desperate. She is a home care manager and is covering visits this week. She filled up on Monday but is running low again as she works rurally so does a lot of miles. She needs to fill up but also needs to do visits so can't sit for ages in a queue. My DB is going to try and fill his car up so she can use that if needs be but he wouldn't normally as he works from home and can manage.

It's a never ending cycle once the words 'queues for petrol' appear in the press. I can understand how it happens and I don't blame the people in the queues. Nobody knows their circumstances so I try not to judge.

Brahumbug · 24/09/2021 16:04

Fortunately, our cars and van run on gas and there is no run on thatGrin

YetAnotherWalk · 24/09/2021 16:04

No, but I really need some but all 3 stations in our town have traffic jams outside Confused Angry Great stuff!

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 24/09/2021 16:05

We’ve got 20 miles left in the tank and a 180 mile round trip to make tomorrow for a wedding – family we’ve not seen since covid hit. Genuinely don’t know what we’re going to do; we have a small baby so trains/taxis too long and a major hassle. Are taxis even possible without your own car seat?! I’m going to be so gutted if we miss it. Had been avoiding the news as it’s all too depressing so sort of missed this hitting headlines.

justasking111 · 24/09/2021 16:07

Tesco's at lunchtime a huge queue I wanted to shop but had to wait in the queue. Two security folks were holding back traffic until it was safe to enter petrol area. Little man collecting trolleys said there had been a bit of shouting over the queues.

canyon2000 · 24/09/2021 16:08

I've just been to the big Sainsburys petrol station and there were only 3 people ahead of me. All the pumps were open so they must still have plenty of fuel. I was quite surprised as I was expecting it to be busy.

ivykaty44 · 24/09/2021 16:09

I put £10 worth in on Wednesday

MuchTooTired · 24/09/2021 16:09

I wasn’t far off the red lines. Normally wouldn’t bother me and I’d drive until the car beeped to refuel and I could be bothered to go to the petrol station but the local express has run out of fuel, and the queue wasn’t too bad for the other one so I got some today. I do feel a bit daft (I put in £60 instead of my normal £30) but I drive a gas guzzler, my son is unwell and the further away petrol stations are running low and are chaos.

It’s not like I won’t use it. Plus, the thought of not being able to get the DTs to nursery next week and having them home was a great motivator Grin

Dentistlakes · 24/09/2021 16:09

It’s pointless judging people. Everyone has their reasons and presumably once people have filled their cars then the queues should ease. It’s not the same as when people were panic buying food and toilet paper, buying far more than they needed and clearing the shelves so there was not enough left to go around.
