Have you bought petrol today when you wouldn't normally have?

The BP petrol station here is closed and every other garage has queues on to the road.

I'll admit I did think I'd get petrol when I was out today. I have half a tank and I do generally keep it topped up for emergencies, although I would probably have left it until next week to fill up normally.

In the event, I didn't bother queuing but I'm guessing most of the people "panicking' are just filling up a few days earlier than they usually would. After all, a tank only holds so much, it's not as if you can buy a year's supply like toilet rolls

I did. Then afterwards I thought I must have shit for brains, because I drive a Tesla.

Unfashionable · 24/09/2021 15:45

Yes. I would normally fill up at the weekend, but I live semi-rurally and am completely reliant on my car so with less than 1/4 tank I filled up yesterday. I call this sensible prudence, not panic buying.

NessieMcNessface · 24/09/2021 15:45

I’m nearly out of petrol but haven’t faced the queues today. Thought I’d try later because it has been so crazy here. The police were called as cars couldn’t get into our Tesco store for shopping because the petrol area is at the entrance, with only one lane entry for both facilities.

RainingYetAgain · 24/09/2021 15:46

DS just driven back from Norfolk and said there were queues into every petrol station and supermarket. We went into Colchester and huge traffic jams blocking the traffic lights into a supermarket and another blocking a feeder road onto the A12.

MatildaIThink · 24/09/2021 15:46

No, because I am not an idiot.

There will only be a shortage if the panic buyers decide to cause one, I have half a tank, that should last a couple of weeks, by which point all the nut nuts should have calmed down. Although going to drop something at my brother's earlier every petrol station I drove past had queues to get in, so obviously the loons are out in force.

TheSockMonster · 24/09/2021 15:46

No, but I’m rather screwed for this weekend if I can’t get any! My plan had been to fill up tomorrow morning on my way past. I have just under 1/4 of a tank which would usually last me a week or more, but sod’s law it had to be this bloody weekend! I messaged both DC and told them to miss their after school clubs and get their minibuses home, so that will help a bit.

Problem is that our nearest petrol station is a 16 mile round trip, so if I get there and there’s no fuel I’ll be even shorter.

AgnesNaismith · 24/09/2021 15:48

Yes I did because if there is no petrol at the weekend I will be unable to get DC to school 🤷‍♀️

randomsabreuse · 24/09/2021 15:49

I normally fill up at 1/4 left (habit from living 15 miles from nearest garage!) or before any long journey to avoid paying ££ for motorway fuel/reduce hassle finding reasonably priced fuel in an unfamiliar place.

Have half a tank in the big car and will use a chunk of that tomorrow so could do with more, only if there's no queues!

Sitchervice · 24/09/2021 15:50

"No naked flames please. This is a thread about petrol.
Safety first."

OOPS!! 😱

EnglishGirlApproximately · 24/09/2021 15:51

I'm on just under half a tank so in normal circumstances would probably fill up on Monday but if I pass a station without horrendous queues before then I'll fill up. I can WFH so work isn't a concern bit school isn't within walking distance so need to be full really.

OrangeTortoise · 24/09/2021 15:51

No

CornishTiger · 24/09/2021 15:52

I filled up Tuesday night as was low and knew I had a 100 mile work journey next day. Next week I have several similar journeys.

Normally I’d have waited to today when paid to fill up and just have put in £20 but we’ve had several shortages here so thought I’d best stretch it to full tank as I expected these shortages.

If fuel shortages carry on I won’t be able to work.

oohyoudevilyou · 24/09/2021 15:53

Yes. I'd normally have got petrol between school and work on Monday but there wasn't too much of a queue at the local garage today so I filled up

alloalloallo · 24/09/2021 15:55

I need to get fuel either today or tomorrow

I was going to get some this morning on the way into work but queues were a nightmare. I’ll see what it’s like on the way home, if not I’ll have to go early tomorrow morning.

I am properly pissed off with idiots queuing out of the petrol station causing huge queues on the main road so it took me an hour to get to work this morning

DirectionToPerfection · 24/09/2021 15:55

No, there are no shortages here in Ireland.

notacooldad · 24/09/2021 15:55

No. I ran low a week last Thursday and filled it up then. It's still nearly full.

Yubaba · 24/09/2021 15:55

I filled up on Wednesday because my fuel light was shouting at me, I only filled it 1/3 full as I usually do but I’m half contemplating filling up more on my way home from work just in case I can’t get more. I have to get DD to school in the mornings and I can’t risk running out of fuel otherwise I have no way of getting her there (she has mobility issues)

Figgygal · 24/09/2021 15:55

I got petrol today because I needed it
Not sure why that’s such a crime or unbelievable to some
Was at least 20 minutes queue unfortunately

SuperStarRose · 24/09/2021 15:56

No I filled up yesterday because I was nearly empty

cobblers123 · 24/09/2021 15:57

I've got just under half a tank of petrol, I may possibly be able to top up tomorrow on my way out quite early but if not, I should have enough for any small journeys for about a week and if I run out, well, tough, I'll just have to walk a bit more.

inmyslippers · 24/09/2021 15:57

I'm down to two bars so do need to fill up.
Hoping to go tonight it might have quietened down

ancientgran · 24/09/2021 15:57

I did because I am doing a 400 mile round trip to visit an elderly relative with dementia for her birthday this weekend. I had enough to get there but didn't fancy being stuck 200 miles from home if I couldn't get petrol. Not sure if that qualifies as panic buying, I might have bought it tomorrow if no worries but equally might have got it today.

KloppsTeeth · 24/09/2021 15:58

No. Either it will be there when I need it or it won’t. I am not going to stress about it.

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 24/09/2021 15:58

Nope. We passed a garage and the place was absolutely full of cars and vans queuing for fuel.

The media are responsible for scaremongering people into doing this.
People need to be sensible and realise that if there truly is going to be a fuel shortage then the fuel needs to be used for key businesses and emergency services etc.
Us all buying fuel is only going to make it happen faster, if indeed it would happen.
Usually deliveries can me made to keep everyone just ticking along even if it means you have to go more often than normal.

Laiste · 24/09/2021 15:59

I think it was really irresponsible of BBC Breakfast news to do that piece this morning.

It was like - Hey everyone! One in twelve BP garages are closed 'cos they can't get the petrol delivered! But - y'know - don't rush out and buy any unless you normally would because panic buying will just.make.it. worse ....''.

Hmm I mean - what do you think was going to happen if you announce that??!
