Have you bought petrol today when you wouldn't normally have?

The BP petrol station here is closed and every other garage has queues on to the road.

I'll admit I did think I'd get petrol when I was out today. I have half a tank and I do generally keep it topped up for emergencies, although I would probably have left it until next week to fill up normally.

In the event, I didn't bother queuing but I'm guessing most of the people "panicking' are just filling up a few days earlier than they usually would. After all, a tank only holds so much, it's not as if you can buy a year's supply like toilet rolls

I filled up cos I have less than a quarter of a tank, mums moving house on Tuesday so I'm back and forth helping her and then will be back and forth Tuesday transporting delicate stuff so didn't want to risk leaving it. Was chaos at Asda but luckily they had plenty of staff directing the queue so it didn't block up the car park. Craziness

ablutiions · 24/09/2021 14:52

We are on the road, going away for the weekend. Done 100 miles so far. About 30% of garages closed altogether, the rest with mostly closed pumps.

Lots at queues.

Luckily we have tiny car.

ILoveMyMonkey · 24/09/2021 14:54

I was going to get some this morning as down to 30 miles (gauge went blank 😬) but couldn’t be bothered so decided to do it on my way home at lunch - well, the first garage the queues were huge! The second garage was shut as empty, finally made it to the 3rd garage who had 2 pumps left open and I was 3rd in the line for one so have now filled up. Have to drive 30 mile round trip 4 times per week and only have a small tank so bit worried about what the situation will be next time I need petrol but I won’t be rushing to sit in any queues unless desperate again.

The worlds gone fucking mad! And this situation is fuelled by the media and social media too!

Sirzy · 24/09/2021 14:55

I filled up on Wednesday because it started flashing at me to tell I needed to. So pleased I did.

I normally fill full tank at a time but for now I will probably keep it topped up at a 1/4 tank for nowt

PurpleDaisies · 24/09/2021 14:57

Isn’t part of this that anyone who is borderline low today but would normally have waited a week to fill up is now filling up in case there’s none left and they’re totally dry?

Yes of course it is. People who really need the fuel to get to work I expect. No one's sitting in the queues for fun.

Nope. Hopefully got enough to get me to work for another week, by then I hope this will be over. I remember the shortages and queuing about 20 years ago. We were lucky then as DH could get it showing his work ID and he used to drop me off at the station on his way to work.

GTAlogic · 24/09/2021 15:01

Dh has gone out and the fuel light was on (we put a tenner in the other week) so yes, he's put diesel in but only because we needed it.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 24/09/2021 15:03

Have you bought petrol today when you wouldn't normally have?

No. My car runs on diesel.

Seriously though, no. I don't use my car to get to work, and won't need it for the next few days, so I'm leaving it for people who really need it right now. I've got half a tank, hopefully in a week or two this will have settled down again.

I do find myself wondering what other news is being buried today though. The government only starts chatting wham about product shortages when there's something even whiffier going on that they want to divert attention from.

kausheyv · 24/09/2021 15:03

Just filled tank as was nearly empty, no queues and no issues.

KaptainKaveman · 24/09/2021 15:06

Had a third of a tank and nipped out last night as soon as I heard the reports. Good job too as there's nothing now....Sad

LooksBetterWithAFaceMask · 24/09/2021 15:06

I got paid yesterday so would be filling up my tank today anyway. I’m semi remote and haven’t been near the petrol station yet but I’m going once I’ve collected ds from school.
She did say the petrol stations in town were pretty crazy I’m hoping our local one is fine.

BobLemon · 24/09/2021 15:07

OH has just text me as he’s walked past our local Sainsbury’s PFS.

He says there’s 25 cars waiting on the road! 25!! And this is one of those huge PFSs with about 12 pumps.

SirenSays · 24/09/2021 15:08

No, DP had to fill up his work vehicle today or he wouldn't have been able to get home. There were long lines and the first station he tried didn't have any.

TheFairyCaravan · 24/09/2021 15:09

No we haven’t. Last night DH said we needed to go out to fill both our cars, which have more than half a tank in each. I told him to get a grip so if we run out it will be my fault.

thepastisanothercountry · 24/09/2021 15:10

Luckily, DP was almost on fumes yesterday morning so got a full tank so its not a question for us at the moment

Aposterhasnoname · 24/09/2021 15:10

I was running on fumes so I filled up as usual. No queues or anything here .

Sonarl · 24/09/2021 15:10

yes, yesterday, was low anyway about quarter of a tank and people kept messaging me about queues at all the local garages an di have a couple of longish journeys to make at the weekend.

It's human nature imo

Octopie · 24/09/2021 15:11

I don't need my car until Sunday night, my light is on but hoping to go over the weekend either early or late so it might be quieter!

Dragonpox · 24/09/2021 15:12

No, but I did dig out the raincoats so we can walk to school all of next week and save the petrol we do have for weekend activities for a few weeks. Hoping they'll solve it all quite soon but it does make me wonder about getting an electric car!

SickAndTiredAgain · 24/09/2021 15:13

Nope. I did the opposite, I need petrol but decided it can wait as I don’t want to queue. I’ll get it next week, I’m not too worried.

Anon778833 · 24/09/2021 15:13

No. People rushing out is what causes it to all dry up. I'm so sick of the me,me,me culture.

HemanOrSheRa · 24/09/2021 15:13

I filled up yesterday lunch time as I was running on fumes, I'm an essential car user at work - I'm on call this weekend so likely to be putting some miles in. The queue for the sainsburys petrol station were huge when I drove past an hour ago. Almost at the point of blocking the road off.

Hiyawotcha · 24/09/2021 15:14

I’m worried because have half a tank only and got to drive 7 hours (there and back) tomorrow to take dd to university. Have seen lots of local reports of queues at local suburban filling stations. Hoping that motorway ones will be OK.

amylou8 · 24/09/2021 15:14

Yes I had 1/4 of a tank and need to drive 300 miles to the airport on Monday. I'd normally have filled up Monday on the way but not prepared to risk it. At 7am I drove straight in. Now all I can hear from the petrol station across the road is horns and shouting.
