Have you bought petrol today when you wouldn't normally have?

The BP petrol station here is closed and every other garage has queues on to the road.

I'll admit I did think I'd get petrol when I was out today. I have half a tank and I do generally keep it topped up for emergencies, although I would probably have left it until next week to fill up normally.

In the event, I didn't bother queuing but I'm guessing most of the people "panicking' are just filling up a few days earlier than they usually would. After all, a tank only holds so much, it's not as if you can buy a year's supply like toilet rolls

Nope topped up last wk when one of our local stations ran out- thought this may happen. Equally worse case I don’t have to drive- I can get around

linelgreen · 24/09/2021 16:10

Yes I filled up mine and OH cars as well as both kids cars just to make sure.

Dentistlakes · 24/09/2021 16:10

To answer the question, no I haven’t filled up but we have 2 cars with half a tank in each and aren’t driving big distances so don’t need to.

tiredanddangerous · 24/09/2021 16:10

No. I'll need to fill up early next week though so I'm hoping there'll be some left!

samwitwicky · 24/09/2021 16:11

Nope!

MyPatronusIsACat · 24/09/2021 16:11

@GreatPotato

We were down to a fifth of a tank (about 100 miles left) and would have been filling up on Sunday. But because of the furore and 'panic' I filled up today. Going away for a few days on Sunday, (to somewhere already booked and paid for for 2 nights/3 days,) so I didn't want to wait til Sunday morning to fill up, and risk not being able to get there and back.

It's around a 150 mile round trip. When me and DH come back, we will still have 300-350 miles worth of petrol left. Should last us at least a week to 10 days... Until the hoo-har hopefully calms down!

So I am apologising to no-one for filling up this morning.

Gertie75 · 24/09/2021 16:12

No, I'm on the red so do need to, I'm going to send dh to do it later.

DogInATent · 24/09/2021 16:12

Yup. Tank was down to a third, normally that wouldn't bother me but today I've brimmed it. I was out today and passed three queued out fuel stations, one with marshals directing traffic. On the way back I was able to pull straight into the one closest to home - it's the fuel station everyone in this town seems to forget about.

tiddlysquat · 24/09/2021 16:14

I topped up , only had less than 1/4 tank left and that wouldn't have seen me through my weekend plans. I avoided the supermarket petrol station and went to a little one and only had to queue 5 mins. The supermarket ones are rammed today!

I should be ok for 3-4 weeks now thankfully but still annoyed I didn't fill up earlier in the week as I did drive in then couldn't be bothered to wait !

Chocoqueen · 24/09/2021 16:15

No - I did fill up on Wednesday but that was because we were running on empty, very glad I did now! Luckily we don't need to use the car much so this should last us a few weeks until it all settles down.

negomi90 · 24/09/2021 16:15

I live near a petrol station. Took me an extra 20 mins to get home due to its line blocking the road.
I happened to fill up 2 days ago but I got lucky as I run my car to empty so would have been screwed if it hadn't been low when it was.

sofakingcool · 24/09/2021 16:15

I bought petrol as I was desperate, on a red light BlushGrin! Won't risk that again

ivykaty44 · 24/09/2021 16:16

This isn't going to change, there is not suddenly going to be HGV drivers delivering fuel next week or the week after

long term there are going to have to be changes

NailsNeedDoing · 24/09/2021 16:16

I would probably have waited until tomorrow or Sunday as I was nearly out of petrol, but went today just in case.

CaptaNoctem · 24/09/2021 16:16

No. There was no queue at Esso ( in fact it was completely deserted) when I went past it to the supermarket.

45 minutes later on my way home the queue was out on the road. Any shortage is going to be entirely manufactured by the media.

ivykaty44 · 24/09/2021 16:17

@Chocoqueen

when is it settling down? how many weeks will it be?

LadyDanburysCane · 24/09/2021 16:17

The two shell garages I drive past on my way home from work had signs saying no petrol but they did have diesel - there were huge queues outside both of them.

I have just under half of a tank which will get me to work next week if we don’t use the car for anything else so we have cancelled our plans for the weekend as that would have used half of what we have.

Djifunrsn · 24/09/2021 16:18

I would have filled up on Saturday. However, I chose to fill up yesterday when the sky news alert came out. So yes, I am one of the “sheeple” and yes I would do it again. Petrol is absolutely necessary. My mum needs cancer meds that keep her alive that i have to drive to the hospital for and my Y11 with asd won’t be able to go to school without petrol. Plus I also filled up my petrol can as it was empty and I need that for my mower. I haven’t cut my grass in a month and have waited until this coming weekend because there have been no green waste collections for a month in my area and one is finally scheduled for next week. I expect people thought I was taking fuel to hoard or something.

There is absolutely no way I would have just sat back with my quarter tank and thought, oh I am better than those people who panic buy. No, I’m the same as everyone else. I need it so I’ll get it. People can be as righteous as they want on here but the fact is they are in a tiny minority as is evidenced by what’s going on at the petrol stations.

FawnFrenchieMum · 24/09/2021 16:19

No I haven't, I only have a 1/4 of a tank left though so wondering at what point I should attempt the fill up??

Applesonthelawn · 24/09/2021 16:20

No. If it turns out I was wrong not to, I'll just walk more, which would be manageable. It doesn't sound like there will be an actual shortage though, just panic buying.

rocklamp · 24/09/2021 16:23

I needed petrol anyway, so filled up. The tanker was there doing a delivery when I arrived. There was a queue, but nothing frantic.

KingsleyShacklebolt · 24/09/2021 16:24

I'm down to a third of a tank and no I didn't.

Because I am not a selfish fucking arsehole.

Fifthtimelucky · 24/09/2021 16:28

No. I have just under half a tank in the main car which will keep me going for at least a week and probably two. I will aim to buy some next Thursday when I will be driving past the cheapest petrol station in the area (about 10 miles away).

My daughter filled up the other car a couple of days ago as it was getting quite low. The first petrol station she tried didn't have any but the second was ok. She drives 60 miles a day (M-F) so gets through quite a bit.

I did notice today when I was out that the local petrol station had a bit more of a queue than usual, but nothing much (probably because it's quite expensive)!

No idea, but it will, it always does. No use panicking about it. My bet is it'll ask be forgotten this time next week.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 24/09/2021 16:31

No, even though I normally would have. I have enough to get to work for the necpxt couple of days so hope the panic has calmed by then
