This is for an event where you wear costumes.

What would you think they'd come as / were trying to look like?

(Having a slight disagreement with DS!)

Thanks :)

I showed it to DS - who is a similar age but doesn't play Warhammer. Fwiw he didn't jump to Nazi vibes and obviously he does know who the Nazis are. He picked up on the steampunk, futuristic vibes.

But, since the event's own guidelines say it shouldn't offend the 'general public' - not other people at the comic con or other DCs who don't jump to think of Nazis - then I'd say your DS needs to pick another costume.

whatthejiggeries · 13/09/2021 15:37

Nazi pirate?

MMMarmite · 13/09/2021 15:38

I wouldn't have thought Nazi, i'd think some kind of Napoleonic scifi mashup

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 13/09/2021 15:38

I think it looks like pre WW2 German military. My first thought was also steampunk. 2nd thought was cartoon villain with the exaggerated tailoring

JuneOsborne · 13/09/2021 15:39

I can't see the nazi vibes at all. But then,I have a Ds into Warhammer and knew instantly it was one.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 13/09/2021 15:42

Yes, the WarHammer thingy!

At the convention most people will recognise it, or will assume it's something like that. Far fewer people will think 'Nazi' than would in 'real life'

appleturnovers · 13/09/2021 15:50

It's a weird one, I've got to say...

1st glance: Pirate
2nd look: 18th century army general
Closer inspection: Nazi
Even closer inspection: Something steam-punky...

I'm just really confused...

chesirecat99 · 13/09/2021 15:52

I don't think it could be mistaken for a Nazi if you make sure that the hat is the same exaggerated cartoony, Bishop mitre shape and have the red coat lining, sash and gold brocade. It will look even less Nazi-like and obviously fantasy if you use a fabric that couldn't be mistaken for leather eg metallic black fabric or velvet and big up the cuffs and gold brocade.

This is the same character with a green torn cloak. Much less Nazi, more post-apocalyptic-Napoleonic:

appleturnovers · 13/09/2021 15:53

However, I've got to just add that if I saw it in real life I would NOT assume it was a Nazi costume, even though in some ways it might be vaguely reminiscent of one, primarily because I generally don't go around thinking the worst of people.

PicardsFlute · 13/09/2021 15:54

I’d say steampunk Nazi…

HarrisMcCoo · 13/09/2021 15:54

Warhammer?

BertramLacey · 13/09/2021 16:02

I'm not wrong, it does look like a Nazi doesn't it.

Yes. I looked at it before reading any responses and it looked to me like a steam punk version of a Nazi, mainly because of the helmet. The great coat doesn't help because even though worn by many others, put together with that kind of helmet it all looks a bit Erich von Klinkerhoffen. Good news is that that doesn't take much tweaking to lose the Nazi overtones.

me4real · 13/09/2021 16:03

I saw it as a pirate with a weird mask on.

Red lapels could be anything, not necessarily Nazi. It's a colour common on military attire.

LaetitiaASD · 13/09/2021 16:04

@Saucery

Some sort of steampunk General?
Steampunk nazi was my first thought
ArtemisiaVulgaris · 13/09/2021 16:07

He should go as a Nurgle 😀

JaneJeffer · 13/09/2021 16:11

it all looks a bit Erich von Klinkerhoffen
Grin

Emmelina · 13/09/2021 16:12

video game/pirate? I'm not familiar with this particular franchise :)

eekbumbler · 13/09/2021 16:12

Haven't read full thread - my first guess is a mish mash - some Gestapo/Nazi some Napoleonic features, the medals - where are they from? Random gas mask... which automatically makes one assume Nazi.

I think it is all combined.

You can't just say Nazi as it is not a Nazi uniform.

ThatSunnyCorner · 13/09/2021 16:16

@LimitIsUp

I also thought Nazi on first viewing (reading with amusement the comments "It's not Nazi because...." - I think most of us know it's not a detailed reproduction of a Nazi uniform! It just gives off that vibe)
Well it's not just the detail, it's completely the wrong colour.
Zilla1 · 13/09/2021 16:19

Steampunk pirate with a 2000AD vibe.

ShrikeAttack · 13/09/2021 16:21

I'm not getting Nazi vibes, if you know Warhammer 40k it's definitely from there, I imagine the majority of people as a cosplay event will be familiar with it.

Idyllic · 13/09/2021 16:22

A character from Fortnite?

Blondiney · 13/09/2021 16:23

Pirate type thing.

BiBabbles · 13/09/2021 16:24

My first thought was Ciaphas Cain, commissar and Hero of the Imperium.

I get what others are saying about the Nazi imagery -- they used a lot of imagery to promote themselves and their imperialism, so other imperial settings tend to end up with pieces that they used like eagles and certain colours. I didn't automatically see it, but I've a lot of 40k books and stuff and my spouse used to make things for this type of cosplay.

For going to an event like that - they'll likely have contact information they might respond if he sends that image and asks if a costume like that fits their guidelines. Not all events will, but I've worked events where that's been a thing especially after we had someone break the weapons rules so hard, police ended up involved (if he's taking a toy gun for it as shown in the image and has it painted as is popular to match the character, make sure it's by someone who knows how to comply with the law around this. That colour scheme doesn't look like an issue to me, but when it doubt, make sure the orange 'this is a toy' end would be visible at a glance or it can be confiscated and people have called the police about that before).
