This is for an event where you wear costumes.

What would you think they'd come as / were trying to look like?

(Having a slight disagreement with DS!)

Thanks :)

Nazi

Sydendad · 14/09/2021 23:35

A nazi pirate steampunk fetishist.

Mamanyt · 15/09/2021 00:34

Steampunk pirate? Such an odd look...

cannockcandy · 15/09/2021 08:17

I'm a nerd and into warhammer and even I saw Nazi first then warhammer. Maybe the costume minus the hat? Or if he is set on the hat, please have a different motif on it or keep it put away until he gets to the event.

GlomOfNit · 15/09/2021 08:21

Um, I'd assume he was into Warhammer 40K?

LittleMissMe99 · 15/09/2021 08:21

Just some cool steampunk type character.

EishetChayil · 15/09/2021 08:43

I would think they were a Nazi. If my husband was with me, he would lamp them.

GlomOfNit · 15/09/2021 08:57

Amused at all the geeks on here (or those who have to live with Warhammer40K geeks) who immediately ID'd it. Grin

But OP, I completely get your point. That particular regiment/army/40K world very consciously references German military uniforms, both WWI and WWII era. As well as some random Napoleonic stuff. Grin I thought the 'eagle' on the peaked cap (arghhh, peaked cap) was actually a winged skull like in other 40K regiments?? But skulls aren't without their Nazi connotations either... and the infantry all wear basically German spiked helmets (plus Chernobyl-type outfits)!

It's a tricky one. I also have a 13 yo 40K enthusiast and his preferred 'world' is Fenric, where the regiments are all Viking-influenced and wolfy, though with (to me) undertones of master race too...

I do find aspects of 40K a bit iffy. I'm completely sure it was never deliberately created to glorify horrendous regimes, but they do borrow liberally from the iconography of totalitarian and facist regimes. You sometimes hear critics of Warhammer saying that there are a significant minority of gamers who have far-right tendencies and enjoy 40K because of this ... I don't know. Not been our experience. But the gloom, nihilism and utterly unrelenting horrible gory mess of it all does repel me! Grin It's bloody expensive too. Still, DS1 is great at painting now and he loves all the backstories (that you 'have' to buy at £30 a pop). He's also old enough and intelligent enough to be able to spot cultural and historical references and have adult conversations about it.

OP, I'd be lobbying heavily for your DS to go as an Orc though. Grin

GlomOfNit · 15/09/2021 09:17

This rather inappropriately cheerful chap (on the left) is clearly wearing something from the Krieg regiment but in the flesh is giving off far more highwayman/pirate-y vibes than militaristic Nazi! So you could perhaps get away with it ...

On the other hand, how a 13 yo is going to be able to construct a costume that looks like ANY 40K character is beyond me!

101waystoworry · 15/09/2021 11:16

@PomBearWithoutHerOFRS

A steampunk pirate captain. I would assume that I was just not "informed" too old and uncool enough to know exactly who it is, but still think it's cool.
I agree with PomBear, it is very steampunk pirate vibes! I just Googled nazi costume to double check as I was really confused by people saying it looks like a nazi costume, it really doesn't at all.
DebHagland · 15/09/2021 11:21

Post apocalyptic steampunk

Jojofjo44 · 15/09/2021 12:04

Steampunk General. I can see that some would see Nazi though.

Faunanflora · 15/09/2021 13:32

Hellboy reference

LookItsMeAgain · 15/09/2021 13:48

Would something like the image work do you think?

SciFiScream · 15/09/2021 15:18

Stream punk pirate, wearing stolen military clothes.

DrCoconut · 15/09/2021 16:03

I immediately thought warhammer. DS is into 40k.

Dannii689 · 15/09/2021 18:49

This doesn't look Nazi at all! what type of Nazi have yous all been learning about Hmm

LowbrowVictoriana · 15/09/2021 21:45

The Nazis from 100 years before the WW2 Nazis, @Dannii689, clearly. The ones with gold braid and stuff.
No, me neither.

Crikey. Why?

Because if someone has a look or ideology you hate, then it's fine to inflict violence upon them.

Oh wait... Confused

Bacchusmaenad · 16/09/2021 18:48

It’s a bit Prince Harry on the piss

You're husband sounds like a catch

Kithulu · 20/09/2021 19:42

If he is at comic con rest assured that everyone there will know he is a Warhammer character......as long as his costume is good enough! 😁😁

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/09/2021 19:48

@Palavah

It looks more Napoleonic era than WW2. Some sort of Mad Max War & Peace mash-up?
I was thinking Napoleonic too. Steam punk.
