This is for an event where you wear costumes.

What would you think they'd come as / were trying to look like?

(Having a slight disagreement with DS!)

Thanks :)

And as this character is called "Commissar" that should give an idea of which area the inspiration is coming from

“Kommissar” just means “officer” or “police inspector” in German. So no, calling the character Commissar doesn’t tell me they are meant to be Russian at all.

TheNatureOfTheCatastrophe · 13/09/2021 19:43

Also "Krieg"?

Sitchervice · 13/09/2021 20:16

If he wants steampunk, all you got to do is look at something like mortal engine or even look online.

Steampunk is more victorian, top hats and aviator goggles.

Oh dear!

DS's little sister's friend, on the way back from swimming this evening, ear wigging on my friend and I talking about this... "what were you saying about unicorns?"

Me: "Unicorns? I wasn't saying anything about unicorns"

DD's friend "yes you were! You were talking about nasty unicorns!"

Me: "Oh. Do you mean nazi uniforms?"

DD's friend "yes! What's a Nazi uniform?"

Me: "Erm...."

I think lots of people don't actually know what a Nazi looks like; they didn't wear Crimean era hussars jackets, nor huge napoleonic-looking epaulettes. Nor did they wear red and grey coats.

The problem, as PP have said, is that people have borrowed aspects of Nazi regalia to use as a shorthand for Imperialism/ baddies. So most people will have got their idea of what Nazis look like from Allo Allo, Wonder Woman, Indiana Jones and even, on occasion, Star Wars. It's not going to be accurate. They're not going to think of an Eagle and say 'hmm, dates back to at least the Roman empire, this one's a bit too big to be a Nazi eagle, this doesn't look like a Nazi to me'. They're just going to think 'argh, Nazi baddie'. And then that costume fails the Cosplay rules. It's not a question of whether it is an accurate depiction of a Nazi, just whether it reminds the general public of that kind of uniform.

To be serious, yes, this exactly.

Yeah I'm getting mostly Nazi vibes from that if I'm honest. Accurate or not, I don't know enough about their uniforms to know better.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 13/09/2021 21:07

Weird. I thought I'd read the thread but without having seen that post, I'm basically a perfect example of what @BertramLacey was talking about Blush

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/09/2021 21:17

The coat, hat and waistcoat are not at all Nazi, other than that it 's a long frock coat worn with a hat.

moofolk · 13/09/2021 23:53

Alien Nazi Highwayman

Straighttalking1 · 14/09/2021 08:13

Fortnite bloke

Pliudev · 14/09/2021 17:24

A model from Games Workshop?

Magnificentbeast · 14/09/2021 17:26

pomers · 14/09/2021 17:38

I think it looks like something from Sharpe with Sean Bean. I believe the Napoleonic war has already been mentioned

LoisLane66 · 14/09/2021 17:38

A highwayman came riding, riding, riding up to the old inn door.
From some poem or other.

Lolabray · 14/09/2021 17:41

Bit WW2 nazi to me

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 14/09/2021 17:44

I wouldn't wear it to Waitrose I don't think

godmum56 · 14/09/2021 17:46

@SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit

Yes, but that doesn't make everything Napoleonic suggestive of Nazism, does it? Where did Nazis have the gold brocade/frogging of the hussar jacket? Or large fringed epaulettes? They're not Nazi-like at all.

The swastika was an ancient Asian religious symbol, so that does make everything Asian suggestive of Nazism too?

I hate hate hate the phrase "what people will think" but the quote from the organisers makes it clear that they are (rightly) concerned about what non con-ers and non larpers will think. And yes i think with the swastika, its a bit about context...and also which way the arms go but that is like the inverted Union Flag, often not noticed. For me on the Op's original picture its that peaked cap with the eagle on...
Alwayswonderedwhy · 14/09/2021 17:47

Death Korps of Krieg if I knew who that was. If not some sort of pirate gaming character.

purplebunny2012 · 14/09/2021 17:50

I think it's absolutely fine for a comic con

Mummabear89 · 14/09/2021 17:50

Having cosplayed myself honestly don't worry about it he will fit in well with the crowd and most of the nerdy/geeky people who attend will know its from warhammer. Though depending on the convention he might have to wear the mask round his neck rather than on his face but he'll be allowed to put it on for photo ops.

Backwaterjunction · 14/09/2021 17:57

A prize cock I’d say
