Abscess (pic), should I pop it?

Very painful abscess on inner thigh developed Sunday evening, saw Dr Monday morning, she prescribed antibiotics which I don’t think is making any difference - red area has grown over last 3 days.

This spot came up today and it getting larger. Do I pop it?

You will scar if you pop it

WanderingTrolley1 · 08/09/2021 21:26

Should I let it burst by itself?

If the red area is growing still, I'd go back to your GP, as the infection may be spreading.
Very tempting to pop it, but I'd try not to!

Does it feel warm/hot, the red area?

Fireplace12 · 08/09/2021 21:27

I’d have had a hot compress on there and a needle in it by now!

Fireplace12 · 08/09/2021 21:27

And it won’t necessarily scar, that depends upon how well you heal.

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 08/09/2021 21:28

I'd also mark the edges of the red area so you can keep track of it's growth (or hopefully shrinkage)

madkittylady · 08/09/2021 21:28

Post this in Sporners Corner and I can guarantee every single one of us them will tell you to pop it! What a beauty! Seriously though, hope you sort it soon, look painful Thanks

MeredithMae · 08/09/2021 21:29

I would get a sterilised needle in that PRONTO!

WanderingTrolley1 · 08/09/2021 21:29

The red area is hot, yes.
I actually went to A&E last night as I was concerned about the pain. The dr said I need to give the antibiotics more time to work.

You’ll get a lot of useful advice on sporners corner. Report post and get it moved.

CornishTiger · 08/09/2021 21:30

Ps I’ll be popping it.

FlyingScott · 08/09/2021 21:32

Oh my gosh, have you had these before?
It’s not a bite or anything?
Definitely go back if it’s not getting any better

WanderingTrolley1 · 08/09/2021 21:33

I’ve never had anything like this before. Dr said it could be from an ingrown hair!

That looks soooo painful! I confess I would have tried to pop it by now (after hot compresses, magnesium sulphate etc) but it looks nasty and the best advice is almost certainly another GP visit.

Hercisback · 08/09/2021 21:35

I'd pop it. Take lots of pics if you do! Sporner corner will love you.

lunar1 · 08/09/2021 21:36

You should definitely go back to the Gp and not pop it yourself. I however have no willpower and would have popped it by now!

PepsiHoover · 08/09/2021 21:39

I'd pop it.

The puss brewing in the spot is the white blood cells fighting infection. So it's actually a good thing.

whatfreshheck · 08/09/2021 21:40

Get a pen and draw around the outline of the redness. That way it's easier to tell if it's spreading. If it's not better soon, go back to the GP and ask them to swab it.

Solo · 08/09/2021 21:40

The antibiotics will be working, and it will likely clear up right at the end of the course, so keep taking them.

I'd so want to squeeze it, but if you do have to go back to the doctor, you might have to admit to squeezing it.

BabbleBee · 08/09/2021 21:42

I’d have had a good go at popping that well before now!

Hoppinggreen · 08/09/2021 21:43

Rather than squeeze I would probably just try and scrape the head off or maybe press down on the sides and It may just go
Obviously look out for signs the redness is spreading

BillyJoe111 · 08/09/2021 21:45

Yup, that would have been a gonner for me too by now. And i would’ve loved every second.

ThirdElephant · 08/09/2021 21:46

Looks like a boil. I get them quite often.

Pop a plaster over the head of it- reduces the pain significantly by preventing it rubbing on clothing, and also makes sure it doesn't gunk everything up when it pops. Change plaster daily. Take warm baths.

FrangipaniBlue · 08/09/2021 21:46

If you don't video yourself popping that amazing specimen then I'm leaving MN, I mean otherwise why am I even here?
