Abscess (pic), should I pop it?

WanderingTrolley1 · 08/09/2021 21:23

Very painful abscess on inner thigh developed Sunday evening, saw Dr Monday morning, she prescribed antibiotics which I don’t think is making any difference - red area has grown over last 3 days.

This spot came up today and it getting larger. Do I pop it?

What is "SPORNERS CORNER", and how do I find it/view it?

How you've resisted squeezing it I'll never know! But I wouldn't be going to a&e with a big spot without having first tried a load of hot compresses on it. And even then I'd go to GP first.

@ljcudd

I have a skin condition that causes numerous abscesses. One of the methods we use to help them drain them self is to use vicks rub on it. Then cover with dressing or a large plaster. The vicks also helps with the pain.

Also draw around the red circle with a sharpie and time. If it goes beyond that circle, draw another circle with the time and seek further medical advice.

Do you have HS by any chance?
FooFighter99 · 09/09/2021 14:23

OP, that looks super painful but I’d definitely be trying to pop it! Hot compress or some mag sulph paste might help it along.[/quote]
Fellow HS sufferer here too! GP has just put me on Lymecycline.... currently in the throes of a major breakout at the moment Sad

you might not thank me once you've visited that board Shock

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

Why aren't you doing all the normal things like bathing with salt water and hot compresses?Confused It is much better today.
The normal thing would be the squeeze the thing. How anybody resists is beyond me
Blossomtoes · 09/09/2021 15:33

How anybody resists is beyond me

Because it would be fucking agony. It’s the reason a HCP freezes it before lancing.

Shuttheblinds · 09/09/2021 15:42

I would pop it if it was me, it is already starting to weep. Once all the gunk comes out the relief will be amazing, the pain will just go. I speak from experience!

Kittykat93 · 09/09/2021 15:48

Why are you going straight to a and e and not trying a gp first?

GP already, 111and now a+e

And we wonder why the NHS is is crisis

WanderingTrolley1 · 09/09/2021 15:59

I’ve tried a hot flannel and it’s slowly oozing.

I originally saw 2 drs at my surgery who advised A&E if no improvement within 2 days. I went to A&E 2 days ago, triage and consultant said to give it more time then to return to A&E if it gets worse…

There’s still a large 1x1” hard area and wondering if they can sort it quickly for me. I’ve been restricted to my bed, can barely walk and have been useless for my children (thankfully DP is about)!

tubbycustardtummyache · 09/09/2021 16:00

If there’s pus about let it out
That’s our philosophy in A&E

I would definitely get a sterile needle on that!

Fluffypastelslippers · 09/09/2021 16:01

I'm amazed your GP said to go to A&E tbh. Mine would get me seen by the practice nurse.

TheChosenTwo · 09/09/2021 16:01

OUCH!
I’m a picker/prodder and can’t leave anything on me alone, scars mean nothing to me over the satisfaction of bursting something.
But that looks painful op. Did you actually get it looked at again today?
(Ps I totally would have had that bad boy pierced before it got to the stage of your first photo!!)
Hope you’re okay Flowers

TheWoleb · 09/09/2021 16:03

But it isnt getting worse. This is just what happens when a pus filled lesion bursts.
Unless you have the symptoms listed previously (which are symptoms of sepsis) then there is no need to go to A&E. They cannot fix it quickly. Magic cream has not been invented.

Keep it clean, take your antibiotics and only go to A&E if symptoms get worse or new ones develop.

Yep, I agree. Keep bathing it with hot salty water 3x a day for as long as you can stand, take pain killers and keep it covered with a lint free dressing.

It's doing what it's supposed to be doing, oozing!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/09/2021 16:08

Obviously if you have a temperature or feel unwell then seek help.

LindyLou2020 · 09/09/2021 16:08

I know! Gruesome but weirdly irresistible 😳😳😳

Droite · 09/09/2021 16:10

Couldn't they drain it properly? Because it looks as if there is still an awful lot of gunk in there which can't be doing any good. If OP is immobilised that needs sorting.

Yes, it needs draining properly. It’s horrifying that so many pp are minimising it.
NotMyCat · 09/09/2021 16:16

HS here also
I'm not minimising it but in my experience they are VERY reluctant to drain. Out of the hundreds of abscesses I've had, I've had precisely one where I had a GA and it drained
The others have all been antibiotics and manage them myself. Hot compresses, keep taking the antibiotics, keep it clean, hibiscrub wash if you have it

TheWoleb · 09/09/2021 16:20

They're not going to drain that. You're going to sit for hours in A&E because this is not an accident resulting in serious injury or an emergency with serious symptoms and then they're going to tell you to finish your antibiotics.

isthismylifenow · 09/09/2021 16:24

I also could not have left that OP.

It does look less inflamed though so the ab have most likely kicked in.

I get quite a few abscesses in my mouth. My DC have been in unfortunate positions more than once when I'm speaking, and it just erupts. Sometime I feel it and they know to stand clear when I say, it's gonna blow.

You will feel a whole lot better when the ooze is out. And the hair if that was really the problem.
