This is Boris’s poll tax moment (and I’m a Tory!)

I am a Conservative who comes from a family of Conservatives.

I am a member of the Conservative party.

I have even worked for my local MP.

I have conservative values.

I think Boris’s decision to increase national insurance such that the working poor subsidise the asset rich is an absolute disgrace.

It goes against all C/conservative values.

I will not be voting Conservative at the next election.

I doubt I will be the only one.

I have never voted conservative.
TBH, I only know people of my parents generation who do and apart from where he’s failed on immigration (allowing the Afghanistan people into the uk), Boris walks on water as far as they are concerned.
He’s a weasly shit bag as far as I am concerned

Xiaoxiong · 07/09/2021 14:49

I'm not averse to voting for the Conservative party (these days I would class myself as politically homeless) but I always knew that on economic policy, they would serve the needs of the people that vote for them - primarily, the retirees and baby boomer generation who are asset rich, and their kids who hope to inherit those assets and not have them eaten up by care home fees. This tax is in no way a surprise given their voting constituency.

ssd · 07/09/2021 14:50

He doesn't need traditional tory voters like you. He's got the English working classes conned. He'll be fine.

I think he knows there is no credible opposition. He has, I think probably correctly, decided that people will hold their nose and vote Tory rather than vote in the current shambles of the labour party.

Knittingupastorm · 07/09/2021 14:55

I’m surprised by your surprise. It’s exactly the kind of thing they’d do.

It goes against all C/conservative values.

The Tories have been subsidising the wealthy to the detriment of the poor for the past decade.

CorrBlimeyGG · 07/09/2021 15:00

Or are some poor more deserving to you than others?

LizzieSiddal · 07/09/2021 15:00

It goes against all C/conservative values.

As does being a serial liar, which Johnson is.

I’m very much against this NI raise as it’s so unfair to poorer people, however I’m glad he’s done it so that people who’ve been blinded by his “charisma” have finally see the light.

Let’s hope many more turn against him. I’ve been saying for years, vote for a —lying— clown and get a circus.

Exactly. It reeks of Tory.

Absolutely this
CheekyAFAIK · 07/09/2021 15:02

the working poor subsidise the asset rich is an absolute disgrace.

This is literally the point of Capitalism and the Conservatives, isn't it? If the poor weren't poor then the rich wouldn't be rich. Because the poor make profit for the rich. Confused

PurpleParrotfish · 07/09/2021 15:17

If Conservative voters weren’t bothered by the Brexit shitshow, the Covid procurement shitshow, the Afghanistan shitshow or cutting foreign aid to starving kids in places like Yemen, why would anyone think they’d be that bothered by this? Somehow the opposition is deemed ‘not credible’ and a ‘shambles’ but a government that is so lethally shambolic they make us a national laughing stock just bounce along happily in the opinion polls.

Brindle88 · 07/09/2021 15:20

What do you feel traditional conservative values are OP? What values are they going against?

YANBU it’s unfair.

Rhythmisadancer · 07/09/2021 15:23

pretty sure Johnson abandoned the Tories years ago - nowadays the PCP is just window dressing for UKIP / BNP and there seem to be plenty of people who are happy with that

B00kMark · 07/09/2021 15:24

I want everyone to pay a bit more tax to fund the country after the last couple of years. Furlough wasn’t free and everyone who needed it benefitted from it. Everyone who didn’t need it should be grateful they didn’t. We can all contribute a bit more. I want the UC increase to become permanent, and the NHS to have more money.

waltzingparrot · 07/09/2021 15:33

How did you all think we were going to fix the social care problem and provide the level of service like Germany and Scandinavia, that we all hold up as the required level, without actually paying for it?

I admire the optimism that this is going to fix the social care problem, or even begin to fix it. This seems to mainly be focused on capping individual costs, I’ve heard nothing about the other issues within social care.

Income tax - therefore linked to income.

The unfairness of this particular decision is what’s so disgusting.

MorrisZapp · 07/09/2021 15:48

I don't understand this. Raising tax to pay for services is the Scandinavian type social equality dream isn't it?

I'm not poor and I pay National Insurance, I guess I'll be paying a bit more, as will all my similarly not poor colleagues.

Isn't this a good thing?

Islamorada · 07/09/2021 15:51

I do not think people care anymore. Boris is anything but conservative. This is like centre left. In fact Macron in France is more conservative than Boris.

Artdecolover · 07/09/2021 15:51

The tories aren't the tories anymore

They are the ENP = English national party - a party that sold its soul to ukip/bnp/erg

Gotta say, its worked for them hasn't it?

The working classes are lapping it up and their traditional voters would vote for a pig in a blue rosette

I know! why oh why are working class people voting for these criminal elitist self serving wankers???? It beggars belief! Confused
MeanderingGently · 07/09/2021 16:00

MorrisZapp: Yes, Scandinavians pay higher taxes to pay for excellent services....however, they have much, MUCH higher wages too, plus the fact that there is a much smaller difference between those at the top of the earning ladder and those in lower paid jobs. It's a much fairer system than ours.

I'm with the OP - I also come from a family of conservative voters through and through, but this latest has done it for me. I'm on a relatively low wage and every penny counts, I really can't afford to be paying extra NI and don't think I should be propping up our richer brethren who can afford an increase. And this is on top of removing the triple lock on the pensions...I'm not far off drawing my state pension and when I do, it will be my ONLY income, I have nothing else to live on.....

I've supported Boris so far thinking that, well, everyone makes mistakes and we've been through unprecedented times, but I think I'm bloody done with the lot of them now....

Artdecolover · 07/09/2021 16:01

The ENP Tory party have been paying VERY close attention to what trump and the gop have gotten away with its quite clear to see that most of their policy is straight out of the trumpian playbook
