Will I regret an emperor sized bed?

We need a new bed. We currently have a king sized bed, so no matter what, we're going up to super king. But, I've hankered after an emperor sized bed for years.

We're going to order in the next week. DH is having a wobble about the emperor size because, well, I'm not sure! He seems to think it's excessive. I've always had a problem relaxing and I've finally learned to relax, because DH has put me a TV in the bedroom (birthday present, probably the very best one, ever!) And I've put my crotchet stuff next to my bed, so I can come upstairs and watch and crotchet. It's heaven.

So now it's time to upgrade the bed. I have a new job, it's quite full on, so I'm thinking, just go for it. We can afford it, we'll love it and it'll be a 10 year investment.

It also means, if we go for the super king and I'd wished we'd gone for an emperor, it'll be another 10 years before I can upgrade again.

We have the room for it.

I have super king - it's massive. I can't see why you'd need bigger? I love my bed, it's my favourite place in my house.

But also, how easy is it to get bedding for an emporer bed?

SquirryTheSquirrel · 08/08/2021 10:52

My reservations would be, how easy is it buy bedding for an emperor, and what sort of nightmare is it to change the duvet cover?

DonLewis · 08/08/2021 10:52

Yeah, the bedding you buy online. I'm not particularly worried about that. I'd buy plain white and buy 2 sets to start with. We can add to it over the years.

I think DH is in your camp. A super king is big and probably big enough.

I have just got this thing about wanting the biggest one we can fit in. DH is quite surprised, I'm normally easily pleased, relatively frugal and not known for wanting the biggest, the best of anything! But there's a real nagging doubt that I'd be a bit gutted if I didn't get it. Most unusual for me!

I also have superking and it's actually a bit too big, my pillows look lost on it. The problem with bigger beds is trying to find nice, affordable bedclothes

DonLewis · 08/08/2021 10:53

Ha, I don't make beds. That's DHs job! I launder the linen, but don't put it back on, so totally not something on my radar. Maybe that's why DH is not so keen!

I love our super king bed. If we had the space, I'd consider an emperor purely for the decadence of it!

If it makes you happy and you've not bothered about bedding availability, then why not go for it?

I'm a big fan of enjoying every day things. Life is too short to save the good china.

Ha ha! We have a mere King and it takes me ages if I have to change the duvet by myself. You might have to help him with the duvet if you get the emperor, unless you go down the route of having a smaller duvet each rather than one big duvet. I've heard of people doing that where they have different ideas about duvet weight and temperature.
RiaOverTheRainbow · 08/08/2021 10:58

Have you tried using masking tape on the floor to mark out the different bed sizes? It can help with visualising how they'd actually look in your room.

WhatAWasteOfOranges · 08/08/2021 11:05

Superking is big enough!! @Roadhouse111 you can buy super king pillows so there are no gaps!

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 08/08/2021 11:06

We have a super king and absolutely love it. It fits all of us plus the dog, so to me an emperor would be a bit excessive. A bit Hugh Hefner.

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/08/2021 11:08

From a visual point of view an emperor becomes difficult because you should size up your duvet. I’d go super king

I have a superking and in my opinion there is no such thing as a bed being too large. Go for it.
UpstreamSwimmer · 08/08/2021 11:10

Always go for the biggest bed.

Porcupineintherough · 08/08/2021 11:10

You buy a new bed every 10 years? Shock We bought our bed (European kingsize) in 2002 and it will see us out I hope. New mattress every 10 years tho.

Crunchymum · 08/08/2021 11:12

How much bigger is an emperor? We've just gone from a double to a super king (which I love but it takes up most of the room Shock)

If space and money hadn't been an issue I'd have gone as big as possible though. We had to buy new bedding anyway.

AgnesPerdita · 08/08/2021 11:12

I would say that seeing as changing a superking bed is a bloody workout then I wouldn't go for an emperor bed. And I'd worry about the quality of the sheets if they were online only.

However if you think DH can manage the marathon of changing it (and he is happy to) then go for it! Beds and relaxing is very important

LadyEloise1 · 08/08/2021 11:16

If it fits, you can afford it, it won't be a problem getting bed linen and your dh will change the duvet then go for it.
Lucky you.
We have a superking size and it's lovely.
We use two single duvets which are hidden under a beautiful white cotton throw.

MovinOnUp · 08/08/2021 11:19

I have an emperor quilt on a super king bed.
Love it.
The only downsides are you are limited to white bed linen, If you're okay with that I say go for it.

Indigopearl · 08/08/2021 11:22

Have you thought about how you will turn it? If going for pocket sprung in that size I would get a zip and link mattress.

RandomMess · 08/08/2021 11:22

Get it and have single quilts on, like having separate beds whenever you want 🤣

trumpisagit · 08/08/2021 11:24

We bought our bed about 18 years ago, and have no intention of ever changing the bed frame, a new mattress I can understand.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 08/08/2021 11:24

The answer to the tiny pillow problem are two super king pillows at the headboard, then two regular pillows in front of them.

There is no such thing as a bed that’s too big, as long as the room can accommodate it.

DonLewis · 08/08/2021 11:26

Ah, the bedframe thing. We upgraded to king from a double, so a whole new bed. And I want to go bigger again. We've had this bedframe about 15 years and it's had a new mattress in the middle of that. So it's a new bedframe to go bigger, even if it's up to super king. But this is my point. If we have a super king and want to upgrade size in the future, it'd be a whole new bed again iyswim?

We have an emperor-sized waterbed. The best thing we ever bought. We have no problem buying bed linen. If your room is big enough, do it.

NotWanting · 08/08/2021 11:30

You can afford it and it will fit - why wouldn't you get it ?

I'd have my whole bedroom as a bed if I could.
