Yes its Lynton and Lynmouth IWandered

Dh and ds are now playing mini golf.

I booked a trip out to swim with seals and see Lundy tomorrow and we need to leave early to get home on Saturday for Dds 6th form open day. Dd came in to tell me that it was ok but will mean she will not be able to sleep for 48 hours as she can only sleep during day from 5am. Confused

Normally on trip you walk for 3 hours on Lundy but that wont be possible though did it last year. Dh wont swim with seals or ds so I asked dh why and he said it is as he is not a good enough swimmer so am trying to get life jackets for the boys.

Nydj · 02/09/2021 17:12

@MissConductUS and anyone else on the thread in that part of the world, I hope the storm has not hit you and yours.

I have just eaten some rainier cherries - they were gorgeous ( as they should be at that price from M&S). I like cherries with some bite to them instead of mush.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 02/09/2021 17:48

My day off work tomorrow will be an actual day off, yay!
I

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 02/09/2021 18:01

Good afternoon thread people. Sunbird I'm so sorry to hear your news.

MissC - I hope you didn't get flooded? I couldn't believe the news when I saw it this morning. We had a lot of rain, but no flooding that I'm aware of. I think it's easing off now.

I have a bit of an exciting weekend coming up - DD started college a couple of weeks ago and we're going to visit her. It'll be the first time DH and DS have seen where she's living, and we're going to explore some Massachusetts towns and maybe do a state park hike.

I'm off to buy Elderflower Cordial and other treats from the British Goods Store for her. I miss her.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 02/09/2021 18:37

Elderflower Cordial - that reminds me I have some homemade Eldeflower "Aufgesetzen" about somewhere.
Google does not give me a translation, but as it has to do with alkohol I am sure there is an English word and tradition.

MissConductUS · 02/09/2021 21:08

Hi all, sorry I've been MIA for a bit. We lost power and internet in the storm for a while and there was really bad flooding with roads closed all around. We had over five inches of rain in about 6 hours and the ground was already saturated with the rain from tropical storm Henri. I'm so glad we had some trees taken down last year that were too close to the house.

We now have power and internet back. Our new stationary bike has been delivered and two blokes are coming to the house tomorrow to move it from the garage into the house and assemble it. I'm going to WFH tomorrow to meet them.

The storm was a doozy. The thunder and lightning were really close to the house last night and scared the daylights out of the cats.

Good Lord! 😳 Sounds well scary! Glad you are all ok!

My day has been exceedingly dull. Fell off the horse yesterday and ended up with concussion and two small fractures in my back. I'm lying here eating chocolate in my pyjamas and ordering the children around. I might have a snooze now...

HelenaJustina · 02/09/2021 22:11

Pupils back in school tomorrow, nearly ready for them!

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 02/09/2021 22:35

Yay! Back to work (well, paid assessment) tomorrow. It's been a long time, nearly 6 months. Today's appointment was "ah, your abscesses have gone, give me a knee bend, over 120°, fantastic. Keep it up, I'll write you a discharge letter. Bye."

So that's that until something else breaks.

mathanxiety · 02/09/2021 23:56

They showed footage of the hurricane and tornados last night and tonight - so glad you have your power and internet back, MissC.

DD3 finally decided to drop a class that wasn't at all what she hoped it would be and switch to another. She has been talking my ear off about this for the last ten days.

The mail carrier has taken to flinging everyone's mail into the vestibule again.

Champagneforeveryone · 03/09/2021 00:36

May I congratulate you math on the marvellous use of the word vestibule. A little used word in the English language IMO.

prok, we have elderflower champagne, a fizzy drink of various alcoholic strength. It needs to be brewed in Grolsh type bottles with the flip lid and can occasionally get dangerously strong. Or so I've been told Wink

Today has been spent doing proper adulting, along with rescuing a very small hedgehog and conning DS into walking 6 miles with me. A day well spent in truth Grin

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 03/09/2021 07:28

champagne Elderflower champagne - that is the right dirction.

For 'Aufgesetzen' you need berries or other suitable fresh fruit, 300g of sugar, vanilla (and other spices), 1,4 l of wheat 'schnaps' 38%, 0,5 l of Weinbrand (wheat brandy?) 40%, a 3l bottle, a cork, a dark place with temperatures of about 20°C and about 6 weeks time. Recipe depends on family tradition and your garden.

sueelleker · 03/09/2021 08:50

Prok. That sounds more like a liqueur, or like the fruit gins people make here. Add sugar and soft fruit to a bottle, top up with gin or vodka, and leave for a few months; shaking it occasionally. www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/how-make-flavoured-gin

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 03/09/2021 09:03

sue I knew there must be something along that line. Here it is generally not done with gin or genever. There were always 2 balloon type bottles behind the linen chest in my DGM bedroom, to be sampled regularily. Grin

Silkiescatz · 03/09/2021 09:11

Glad power is restored MissC

DH has been sick 3 times in the night and looks sick as a parrot so I have cancelled our swim with seals trip. We did it last year so its fine though think we will lose the money. DD has gone to sleep. Ds is ipadding. Dh said he wants me to stay next to him though he is asleep now but he is never normally ill. Supposed to be journey back tonight or tomorrow and I dont drive though dh thinks he will be ok by then. I hope its not covid, dh says of course its not then added I love you if I die.

Champagneforeveryone · 03/09/2021 09:58

That's exactly the sort of thing DH would say silkie and mean it Grin

Silkiescatz · 03/09/2021 16:49

DH has finally emerged out of bed and gone for a game of mini golf with Ds but says he still feels like death but not been sick again at least so hopefully a 24 hour thing. We have lomg journey back tomorrow early so really hoping no one else gets it and he has been breathing over me in the bed 10cms away Hmm saying he hopes I dont get ill.

HildaTablet · 03/09/2021 17:02

Prok we make sloe gin that way (do you call them schlehe - blackthorn?).

It's good your DH is feeling a bit better silkies, although a crying shame you had to cancel the swim with the seals.

I've spent another very boring day going through files of old paperwork, getting ready to have them shredded. I finally woke up to the fact that I don't officially need to keep any documents older than 7 years. I've got reams of them and they all have to go.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 03/09/2021 17:03

DH has harvested yellow habaneros and is now out to buy ingredients for the sauces.
I had a look at my baking cupboard and feel like baking.

Silkiescatz · 03/09/2021 20:27

Packing now and set up meeting with school and messaged LA to get final EHCP. In theory leaving at 5am.

Takeaway from Italian at 9.30pm, everywhere booked tonight.

OhWhyNot · 03/09/2021 20:59

I feel ready for bed

Right now flicking through Netflix trying to decide on a film

Champagneforeveryone · 03/09/2021 21:31

British Airways have nearly £2000 of mine, £1200 or so in flights and £700 or so on an e-voucher. With my imminent house move I want this money back but it appears I cannot have it. Even more galling that we were all advised to take vouchers in a bid to stop the travel industry collapsing in the middle of the pandemic. I tried to speak to them but a recorded message says they are too busy and cuts me off.

Life seems to be increasingly difficult recently, coupled with my sudden inability to sleep properly and loss of appetite (which will be purely down to stress)

My National Trust sticker has stayed on my windscreen this time though, so that's something.

Gingerwarthog · 03/09/2021 21:33

Hello all. House of Hog emerging from
24 hour sickness bug - the same type that seems to have afflicted Silkie's DH also.
In addition to being sick DH and DD felt very low too and needed to be tucked up on sofas with episodes of 'Blue Planet' to binge watch. All OK now.
I have had elderflower liqueur Prok and it's very nice indeed.

MissConductUS · 03/09/2021 21:34

Welcome, @Apocalyptichorsewoman, and thanks for sharing your news. I'm so sorry to hear about your injuries and hope you have a speedy recovery.

Silkie, if your DH has a stomach virus it's more likely to be spread by contact rather than airborne particles, so hand washing is key. If that's his only symptom it's unlikely to be covid.

@OhWhyNot, if you're looking for something new to watch, I've just finished the first episode of a Netflix series called The Defeated, set in post-war Berlin. The first episode was really good.

The blokes who came to assemble the new bike (a Bowflex G6) were right on time and did a great job setting everything up and showing me how to make adjustments. It was a father and son team, which I thought was nice. DH is greatly relieved that this task did not fall to him.

I've taken one quick ride on it and it's much smoother and quieter than the old one, so I'm pleased.

Tropical storm Ida did considerable damage to my deck garden. It was the end of the season, so not a huge problem. I did get some nice tomatoes and tomatillos.

Champagne, if it makes you feel any better, none of the US Airlines are giving refunds either. They're not legally required to, unfortunately.

Hog, sorry to hear it's hit your house too. The stomach virus I had a week ago really knocked me for six. DH never got it, but I was pretty careful not to spread it.
