Has MN changed?

Do you think MN had changed since you joined? How did it used to be?

I have been here several years. A few years back it seemed quite nasty In places .but it seems better now. Does not seem to be so many attacks on posters or bun fights . Seems to be better debates without it getting overly nasty.

There was a self appointed queen bee a few years ago who has a possession hanging on to her every world.

Thankfully she has gone and so have her hangers on.

Galassia · 07/08/2021 20:13

^ not possession! Posse!

User5827372728 · 07/08/2021 20:14

Racist and erm still racist

Galassia · 07/08/2021 20:14

Word not world! Gah!

backtoworkigooo · 07/08/2021 20:14

Ooo who's the queen bee @Galassia ?

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 07/08/2021 20:15

No. It's pretty much the same as it's always been.

TooWicked · 07/08/2021 20:17

It’s overrun with trolls, I don’t think it ever used to be this bad. I reckon on an average day 70% of threads in AIBU are trolls and most of them are bloody obvious from the first post as well.

Ah yes I guess there will always be trolls. They are all over the Internet it will never be troll free .

I don't think it's particularly bad for trolls, you're just seriously underestimating how many mumsnetters are starting threads with questions that could be answered with a 10 second Google

There was one the other day asking if people who had been to a specific street could tell the OP if a branch of Boots was still open. I mean FFS, try Boots own bloody website??

Saladcreamormayo · 07/08/2021 20:21

I've been on MN almost 10 years now, seems to be many more members and posters, far busier than it used to be 10 years ago.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 07/08/2021 20:21

Used to ‘know’ lots of posters.

Now I don’t recognise anyone.

Used to be very very funny.

Happy days

Sparklingbrook · 07/08/2021 20:21

I think it's changed but you aren't allowed to say it has. Grin It's been the same forever apparently.

Does not seem to be so many attacks on posters or bun fights Not sure I agree with that because of all the trolls.

exwhyzed · 07/08/2021 20:23

It's much bigger.

I've been here since about 2009/10 under various names, some quite well known in their time.

Now I stay under the radar, name changing regularly and siloing the information I share.

I think there's been a few big 'moments' that have changed the site and the way people use it, penis beaker being one (which I've never understood, that thread was shit) and Jeffery being another. The trawling by newspapers for content has also made me very very careful what and how I share.

Before that I had a few mumsnetters I had met on mumsnet as actual friends in Facebook through various projects. I wouldn't do that now.

I sometimes see posts from names I don't recognise and suspect they are people who I 'know' from the old days who like me now name change regularly.

I still enjoy being here, it's just different.

Not sure she's totally gone. Hides in plain sight being snarky still about other people's clothes every so often. And I'm sure if there were ever another HQ party her name would randomly be chosen to attend as usual. Wink

In answer to the question: yes, I joined in 2004 and as it was much smaller, you did feel you got to know more people "personally". Negative side of that was the cliques and "well hellair" callouts. Positive side was that you genuinely did make friends.

Content- used to be more witty, sharp and plain intelligent. And that's not me being a snob. It's a fact. Political pundits watched MN to see which way the wind was blowing at election time. The leaders of the main political parties would come and do webchats in election week itself. That's not likely to happen again any time soon, let's face it.

What changed?
Things like ill thought out collaborations with the Mail, bringing in a sex topic (maybe in an attempt to be cool and liberal but just bringing in Herbert the Pervert and his mates), encouraging made up bollocks like CF parking sagas etc etc. The influx of the PO.

Etc etc.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 07/08/2021 20:26

It's changed a lot since I joined (2006 I think). There are a lot more bannings now, there's a lot more name changing and therefore fewer opportunities to get to know people. And threads didn't get published in the tabloids.

Agreed.

  • should I name my baby "Swan"
  • I love flies walking on me
  • Covid football

MN is as bonkers as ever

Steakandcheeseplease · 07/08/2021 20:27

Yes its changed, much more heavily moderated.I first joined eight years ago and the bun fights were savage and debates were robust. I think MN is a victim of its own popularity now.

Originally it was a site for women and even though I still believe the majority are still women I think there are a lot of MRA on here.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 07/08/2021 20:28

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 07/08/2021 20:28

it's definitely not the same without Zombie Sad

DramaAlpaca · 07/08/2021 20:29

I've been here ten years. The trolling has got much worse, so many made up threads that are very obvious and tedious. The aggression on AIBU can be horrendous, and there are far fewer really funny threads these days. It's deteriorated since that stupid penis beaker thread attracted lots of attention a while back.

Some of the queen bee types left after the New Year's Eve debacle years ago, thank goodness. The site is so big now that it's harder for cliques to form, and that's a good thing.

I'd love to know which particular queen bee @Galassia is referring to!

iklboo · 07/08/2021 20:31

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba - I loved Zombie. Broke my heart when she died, after being friends with her on here for years and knowing all about her life, illness & struggles.

I think there are more Fun Sponges than there used to be, taking offence or derailing lighthearted threads, I also see a lot more attacks on OPs for how they have phrased their OP or the entire thread descend into a pile on because the OP has broken an unspoken rule. Seems to be less having a laugh and more spoiling for a row.
