Is it the norm for mums to look mortified when women change in the female changing room?

I joined a fitness club this month and have using the gym. The club has a pool/sauna etc, the usual stuff, gym and classes. There are male, female and family changing facilities which you use whatever activity. The club does family swim times.

Today I went to the gym and had a shower/got changed after work when the family swim time was on. I was in the female changing room and a few women were getting changed naked etc, not prancing around showing off, I just mean boobs/fanjo out when changing.

I noticed a few of the mums looking mortified and getting their children to look the other way and even heard one "tut". Is this normal? I don't mean they should let their kids stand and stare which would be weird, but the mums looked very uncomfortable to the point it appeared the women getting changed in the nude was wrong.

Is this the normal?

Thanks.

The club I've joined also has a separate family changing room. I wonder why it wasn't used by those who are so offended by women changing?
@TheAwfuITruth

That's a joke from a comedian, only he said pubes. I can't remember which one. That's going to annoy me now.
Most probably, although I don't remember the specifics.

Billy Connolly maybe?

NoYOUbekind · 20/07/2021 19:15

if there's separate family changing then there's no need for them even to be in the female. I have heard (and indeed I've probably done this) a firm 'we do not stare at other people in the changing room' - which I think is fine because how are the kids supposed to know unless we tell them? - but tuts and the like are well out of order.

MarshaBradyo · 20/07/2021 19:16

Why should you feel bad?

Irritating me from afar

rishisboater · 20/07/2021 19:17

I'm guessing this is in the UK? Because no where else on earth would this be an issue!

Rosewaterblossom · 20/07/2021 19:20

Yes UK

I have been to swimming pools in other countries where you have to shower and wash properly before going in the pool. And, yes, you have to shower naked. In front of other people ( same sex ) There were signs on the wall with the parts of the body you need to pay special attention too.

rishisboater · 20/07/2021 19:20

This does remind me of a little girl once looking at me and my unkempt bush and then asking her mum "mummy will I have lots of fur like that lady one day"

SunshineCake · 20/07/2021 19:22

@Frazzledd

Fanjo 🤣🤣!!!

(Hopefully someone will tell you in a mo but that's ace! Stolen....Grin!!)

???

This is an old MN word for it Confused.

NiceGerbil · 20/07/2021 19:23

To tut at women (op said not just her) changing in a changing room is weird.

If you don't feel comfy look the other way.
If you kid states say stop staring.
If you are worried kid will say something face them away and you facing them.

Tutting? Out of order.

fallfallfall · 20/07/2021 19:31

ah yes.
i try and do my changing as discrete and quickly as possible without going into the cubicles.
pay locker, so taking the clothing to the cubicle leaves your outerwear purse etc at risk. packing all your stuff to the cubicle uses up so much space risks falling on the wet floor etc.
anyway i change quickly and consider any little ones that see my wrinkled yet chubby body a opportunity for that body beautiful lecture.

NerrSnerr · 20/07/2021 19:33

@SunshineCake maybe she hasn't come across is before or hasn't been on MN for long?

Our gym has open changing rooms and people don't worry about being naked. I get changed quickly but don't worry about showing my body. There are some boys who are clearly too old around sometimes and they obviously do stare at the women. There is a separate family cubicle so if they're too young to be changing alone but too old for the ladies they should be there.

BigRedBoat · 20/07/2021 19:43

A brief view of boobs/muff whilst changing - fine. The lady completely starkers bent over rummaging in her bag directly behind me whilst I sat at the mirror to dry my hair - a bit much Grin

maddiemookins16mum · 20/07/2021 19:44

I’m always to busy trying to get my knickers on when I’m not quite dry enough to notice other Fanjos.

BobsYerUnclee · 20/07/2021 19:45

@TheAwfuITruth

I've been tutted at in the past.

Honestly, it's like no one's ever seen a woman with her foot up on the bench, drying her muff with the hairdryer before...

Thanks for that!!! Just sprayed saliva over my sleeping child Grin
Frazzledd · 20/07/2021 19:49

@SunshineCake Thank you! I've been made aware.....apologies for my lack of MN olde vagina lingo BlushHmm

Off to the penis section....'dongflong'? '

Rosewaterblossom · 20/07/2021 19:57

There seem to be a lot of 'prissy, uptight' people in the world. Clearly, many of these mothers never had to do a 'strip shower' at school.

Rosewaterblossom · 20/07/2021 20:04

I dunno, my mother is very prudish and uptight and she was made to shower naked with the other girls back in the 50s and 60s!

I cancelled my private gym membership as they constantly had kids swimming lessons on the go. I didn’t appreciate being gawked at by the older kids (some of the boys looked too old to be in there), and got fed up of parents letting their younger ones just run around screaming and banging shower doors. I had to tell one set off as they nearly slipped and hurt, parents nowhere in sight. To piss me off even more, because the kids kept leaving the showers running, they put those annoying showers that you push the button and water comes out for 10 seconds, and then you have to push the fecking thing again. I didn’t pay good money for crap like that. If I wanted to get changed in a zoo I’d have joined the council run gym.

PollyannaWhittier · 20/07/2021 20:17

It wouldn't bother me in the slightest now, but my friends and I were traumatised aged about 14 by the sight of one of our teachers strolling round the changing room starkers drying off very slowly after swimming - and yes, she had seen us and recognised us (high school on the same site as the town leisure centre, staff and students got 1/2 price swimming at lunch so being in there at the same time as students wasn't an unlikely scenario)

Blossomtoes · 20/07/2021 20:18

Why aren’t the kids in the family changing area? There’s no need for them to be there at all.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 20/07/2021 21:26

I guess the difficult thing for the gym is enforcing the age rule, if there is one. Not wishing to derail the thread but we also have some grim person who regularly leaves their kids soiled swim nappy thing in the showers. When I complained, the gym acknowledged it was a problem but admitted that they didn’t really now how to stop it.

NiceGerbil · 20/07/2021 21:49

It's a shame there now need to be age rules when in the past it was common sense and thinking of others iyswim.

Anyway that comment is irrelevant just saying!

On the nappy thing there's loads they can do.
Have they put pointed signs up saying no nappies the bins are in X
Has no one seen who it is? If it's a little kids session s staff member can lurk after
That sort of thing
